    DAMSS-2018 is the jubilee 10th international workshop on data analysis methods for software systems, organized in Druskininkai, Lithuania, at the end of the year. The same place and the same time every year. Ten years passed from the first workshop. History of the workshop starts from 2009 with 16 presentations. The idea of such workshop came up at the Institute of Mathematics and Informatics. Lithuanian Academy of Sciences and the Lithuanian Computer Society supported this idea. This idea got approval both in the Lithuanian research community and abroad. The number of this year presentations is 81. The number of registered participants is 113 from 13 countries. In 2010, the Institute of Mathematics and Informatics became a member of Vilnius University, the largest university of Lithuania. In 2017, the institute changes its name into the Institute of Data Science and Digital Technologies. This name reflects recent activities of the institute. The renewed institute has eight research groups: Cognitive Computing, Image and Signal Analysis, Cyber-Social Systems Engineering, Statistics and Probability, Global Optimization, Intelligent Technologies, Education Systems, Blockchain Technologies. The main goal of the workshop is to introduce the research undertaken at Lithuanian and foreign universities in the fields of data science and software engineering. Annual organization of the workshop allows the fast interchanging of new ideas among the research community. Even 11 companies supported the workshop this year. This means that the topics of the workshop are actual for business, too. Topics of the workshop cover big data, bioinformatics, data science, blockchain technologies, deep learning, digital technologies, high-performance computing, visualization methods for multidimensional data, machine learning, medical informatics, ontological engineering, optimization in data science, business rules, and software engineering. Seeking to facilitate relations between science and business, a special session and panel discussion is organized this year about topical business problems that may be solved together with the research community.     COBE's search for structure in the Big Bang

    The launch of Cosmic Background Explorer (COBE) and the definition of Earth Observing System (EOS) are two of the major events at NASA-Goddard. The three experiments contained in COBE (Differential Microwave Radiometer (DMR), Far Infrared Absolute Spectrophotometer (FIRAS), and Diffuse Infrared Background Experiment (DIRBE)) are very important in measuring the big bang. DMR measures the isotropy of the cosmic background (direction of the radiation). FIRAS looks at the spectrum over the whole sky, searching for deviations, and DIRBE operates in the infrared part of the spectrum gathering evidence of the earliest galaxy formation. By special techniques, the radiation coming from the solar system will be distinguished from that of extragalactic origin. Unique graphics will be used to represent the temperature of the emitting material. A cosmic event will be modeled of such importance that it will affect cosmological theory for generations to come. EOS will monitor changes in the Earth's geophysics during a whole solar color cycle

    Stability of Articulated Revetments Against Wave Attack on Shallow Soft Soil Slopes

    Continuously-connected, articulated revetment systems have potential to decrease the weight of armor cover in resisting wave attack, compared to traditional designs. Modes of instability for sloping revetments include uplift, sliding, and toe roll-up. Design methods are summarized by McDonnell (1998), Pilarczyk (1998), and Herbich (1999). Russo (2003) conducted a field prototype scale investigation on performance of Articulated Concrete Mattresses (ACMs) in coastal Louisiana, which demonstrated this structure’s ability to resist a range of wave loading conditions, and inspired scoping of further research to quantify structure performance beyond known limits. Present research expanded earlier works by examining fundamental physical processes of wave loading near the theoretical threshold of structure incipient motion. The motivation for further investigation and modeling modes of failure is to: (1) demonstrate a method to support the design selection process, (2) optimize revetment dimensions when articulated block is considered the most appropriate application, and (3) meet earthen slope protection requirements with relatively low ground pressures exerted by the armor layer for use in soft soil conditions. A new structure performance metric is derived as the physically dimensionless “hydromechanic potential,” which is used to quantify structure movement as an interconnected system under wave attack. Research involved using a spectral hydromechanics analytical approach, with instrumented physical model results, to demonstrate a capability for constraining uncertainty on the behavior of revetments in specified conditions. Physical modeling was conducted based on dimensional analysis and similitude criteria. Physical modeling and spectral analysis were based on principles of hydrodynamics and structure mechanics of articulated revetment system configurations at incipient motion under irregular wave conditions. Theoretical equilibrium exists when destabilizing wave loading forces are in balance with restoring gravitational forces of the structure. Tests of prior works, conducted through traditional methods, were generally able to measure structure performance under wave attack to between 3.7 and 8 of the ratio of destabilizing-to-restoring forces. Despite being the best available physical data measurable to-date, Herbich (1999) characterized structure performance in this range for design as “doubtful”. Results of this dissertation research indicated that a new lower limit is detectable at the threshold of equilibrium based on hydromechanic potential

    Collision-avoidance navigation systems for Maritime Autonomous Surface Ships: A state of the art survey

    The rapid development of artificial intelligence significantly promotes collision-avoidance navigation of maritime autonomous surface ships (MASS), which in turn provides prominent services in maritime environments and enlarges the opportunity for coordinated and interconnected operations. Clearly, full autonomy of the collision-avoidance navigation for the MASS in complex environments still faces huge challenges and highly requires persistent innovations. First, we survey relevant guidance of the International Maritime Organization (IMO) and industry code of each country on MASS. Then, major advances in MASS industry R&D, and collision-avoidance navigation technologies, are thoroughly overviewed, from academic to industrial sides. Moreover, compositions of collision-avoidance navigation, brain-inspired cognitive navigation, and e-navigation technologies are analyzed to clarify the mechanism and principles efficiently systematically in typical maritime environments, whereby trends in maritime collision-avoidance navigation systems are highlighted. Finally, considering a general study of existing collision avoidance and action planning technologies, it is pointed out that collision-free navigation would significantly benefit the integration of MASS autonomy in various maritime scenarios
