    Beyond Flatland : exploring graphs in many dimensions

    Societies, technologies, economies, ecosystems, organisms, . . . Our world is composed of complex networks—systems with many elements that interact in nontrivial ways. Graphs are natural models of these systems, and scientists have made tremendous progress in developing tools for their analysis. However, research has long focused on relatively simple graph representations and problem specifications, often discarding valuable real-world information in the process. In recent years, the limitations of this approach have become increasingly apparent, but we are just starting to comprehend how more intricate data representations and problem formulations might benefit our understanding of relational phenomena. Against this background, our thesis sets out to explore graphs in five dimensions: descriptivity, multiplicity, complexity, expressivity, and responsibility. Leveraging tools from graph theory, information theory, probability theory, geometry, and topology, we develop methods to (1) descriptively compare individual graphs, (2) characterize similarities and differences between groups of multiple graphs, (3) critically assess the complexity of relational data representations and their associated scientific culture, (4) extract expressive features from and for hypergraphs, and (5) responsibly mitigate the risks induced by graph-structured content recommendations. Thus, our thesis is naturally situated at the intersection of graph mining, graph learning, and network analysis.Gesellschaften, Technologien, Volkswirtschaften, Ökosysteme, Organismen, . . . Graphen sind natürliche Modelle dieser Systeme, und die Wissenschaft hat bei der Entwicklung von Methoden zu ihrer Analyse große Fortschritte gemacht. Allerdings hat sich die Forschung lange auf relativ einfache Graphrepräsentationen und Problemspezifikationen beschränkt, oft unter Vernachlässigung wertvoller Informationen aus der realen Welt. In den vergangenen Jahren sind die Grenzen dieser Herangehensweise zunehmend deutlich geworden, aber wir beginnen gerade erst zu erfassen, wie unser Verständnis relationaler Phänomene von intrikateren Datenrepräsentationen und Problemstellungen profitieren kann. Vor diesem Hintergrund erkundet unsere Dissertation Graphen in fünf Dimensionen: Deskriptivität, Multiplizität, Komplexität, Expressivität, und Verantwortung. Mithilfe von Graphentheorie, Informationstheorie, Wahrscheinlichkeitstheorie, Geometrie und Topologie entwickeln wir Methoden, welche (1) einzelne Graphen deskriptiv vergleichen, (2) Gemeinsamkeiten und Unterschiede zwischen Gruppen multipler Graphen charakterisieren, (3) die Komplexität relationaler Datenrepräsentationen und der mit ihnen verbundenen Wissenschaftskultur kritisch beleuchten, (4) expressive Merkmale von und für Hypergraphen extrahieren, und (5) verantwortungsvoll den Risiken begegnen, welche die Graphstruktur von Inhaltsempfehlungen mit sich bringt.     Choreographing the extended agent : performance graphics for dance theater

D.)--Massachusetts Institute of Technology, School of Architecture and Planning, Program in Media Arts and Sciences, 2005.Includes bibliographical references (v. 2, leaves 448-458).The marriage of dance and interactive image has been a persistent dream over the past decades, but reality has fallen far short of potential for both technical and conceptual reasons. This thesis proposes a new approach to the problem and lays out the theoretical, technical and aesthetic framework for the innovative art form of digitally augmented human movement. I will use as example works a series of installations, digital projections and compositions each of which contains a choreographic component - either through collaboration with a choreographer directly or by the creation of artworks that automatically organize and understand purely virtual movement. These works lead up to two unprecedented collaborations with two of the greatest choreographers working today; new pieces that combine dance and interactive projected light using real-time motion capture live on stage. The existing field of"dance technology" is one with many problems. This is a domain with many practitioners, few techniques and almost no theory; a field that is generating "experimental" productions with every passing week, has literally hundreds of citable pieces and no canonical works; a field that is oddly disconnected from modern dance's history, pulled between the practical realities of the body and those of computer art, and has no influence on the prevailing digital art paradigms that it consumes.(cont.) This thesis will seek to address each of these problems: by providing techniques and a basis for "practical theory"; by building artworks with resources and people that have never previously been brought together, in theaters and in front of audiences previously inaccessible to the field; and by proving through demonstration that a profitable and important dialogue between digital art and the pioneers of modern dance can in fact occur. The methodological perspective of this thesis is that of biologically inspired, agent-based artificial intelligence, taken to a high degree of technical depth. The representations, algorithms and techniques behind such agent architectures are extended and pushed into new territory for both interactive art and artificial intelligence. In particular, this thesis ill focus on the control structures and the rendering of the extended agents' bodies, the tools for creating complex agent-based artworks in intense collaborative situations, and the creation of agent structures that can span live image and interactive sound production.     Detection and Evaluation of Clusters within Sequential Data

    Motivated by theoretical advancements in dimensionality reduction techniques we use a recent model, called Block Markov Chains, to conduct a practical study of clustering in real-world sequential data. Clustering algorithms for Block Markov Chains possess theoretical optimality guarantees and can be deployed in sparse data regimes. Despite these favorable theoretical properties, a thorough evaluation of these algorithms in realistic settings has been lacking. We address this issue and investigate the suitability of these clustering algorithms in exploratory data analysis of real-world sequential data. In particular, our sequential data is derived from human DNA, written text, animal movement data and financial markets. In order to evaluate the determined clusters, and the associated Block Markov Chain model, we further develop a set of evaluation tools. These tools include benchmarking, spectral noise analysis and statistical model selection tools. An efficient implementation of the clustering algorithm and the new evaluation tools is made available together with this paper. Practical challenges associated to real-world data are encountered and discussed. It is ultimately found that the Block Markov Chain model assumption, together with the tools developed here, can indeed produce meaningful insights in exploratory data analyses despite the complexity and sparsity of real-world data.Comment: 37 pages, 12 figure

    The student-produced electronic portfolio in craft education

    The authors studied primary school students’ experiences of using an electronic portfolio in their craft education over four years. A stimulated recall interview was applied to collect user experiences and qualitative content analysis to analyse the collected data. The results indicate that the electronic portfolio was experienced as a multipurpose tool to support learning. It makes the learning process visible and in that way helps focus on and improves the quality of learning. © ISLS.Peer reviewe

    Investigating structural plasticity in musicians’ brains using structural magnetic resonance and diffusion tensor imaging techniques

    Neuroplasticity is the ability of the brain to change its structure and/or function in response to environmental stimuli. It is implicated in many processes, such as learning, maturation, skill acquisition, and rehabilitation following brain injury. With the advent of neuroimaging techniques, the study of neuroplasticity and its mechanisms have fascinated researchers given the wide scope with which this process is involved. Musicians have long been considered an ideal model to study neuroplasticity in humans. It has been shown that musicians with their early, intensive, and multimodal skilful practice have structural plasticity in different brain regions. The objective of this work was to extend these structural studies through examining different cohorts of musicians, using a multitude of imaging and morphometric techniques, and performing novel examinations of brain regions essential for enabling high level musical performance such as Broca’s area, corpus callosum (CC), and cerebellum. Three age-, gender- and handedness-matched cohorts were examined. The first cohort included 26 orchestral musicians and 26 non-musicians. High resolution T1-weighted structural MR images were acquired to measure gray and white matter volumes and cortical surface area of Broca’s area subparts: pars opercularis/BA44 and pars triangularis/BA45. The second cohort included 12/12/12 professional musicians/amateur musicians/non-musicians. High resolution T1-weighted MR images were acquired to measure cross-sectional areas of four regions of the midsagittal CC: CC1 (rostrum/ genu/anterior body), CC2 (anterior midbody), CC3 (posterior midbody), and CC4 (isthmus and splenium). In the third cohort, 12/12 musicians and non-musicians were examined. High resolution T1-weighted structural MR images were acquired to measure cross-sectional areas of CC1-CC4 regions; and diffusion tensor imaging-based tractography was used to measure average fractional anisotropy (FA), mean diffusivity (MD), tract volume, and number of streamlines of the same regions. In a subset (10/10) of this cohort, high resolution structural scans were used to measure gray and white matter volumes of cerebellar hemispheres; and diffusion tensor imaging-based tractography was used to measure average FA, tract volume, and number of streamlines of superior (SCP) and middle (MCP) cerebellar peduncles. Outcome measures were compared between groups. Compared to controls, musicians possessed greater gray matter volume and cortical surface area of left pars opercularis/BA44 in the first cohort. The volume of left pars opercularis was positively correlated with years of musical performance. Professional musicians possessed greater cross-sectional area of CC1 and CC4 regions compared to amateurs and non-musicians in the second cohort. In the third cohort, musicians possessed greater cross-sectional area, average FA/tract volume/number of streamlines, and lower MD in CC4 region. There was a negative correlation between cross-sectional area of CC4 region and age of starting musical training. There was a positive correlation between average FA values and cross-sectional area of CC4 region in all subjects. In addition, musicians had increased white matter volume of the right cerebellar hemisphere, increased tract volume and number of streamlines of right SCP, and tract volume of right MCP. I hypothesize that these findings represent use-dependent structural plasticity imposed by musical performance. At the microscopic level, these macroanatomical changes may reflect increased synaptogenesis and dendritic growth, generation of new axon collaterals, and formation of new neurons, which would support enhanced functional demands on musicians’ brains
