    The purpose of the Office of Aeronautics and Space Technology (OAST) In-Space Technology Experiments Program In-STEP 1988 Workshop was to identify and prioritize technologies that are critical for future national space programs and require validation in the space environment, and review current NASA (In-Reach) and industry/ university (Out-Reach) experiments. A prioritized list of the critical technology needs was developed for the following eight disciplines: structures; environmental effects; power systems and thermal management; fluid management and propulsion systems; automation and robotics; sensors and information systems; in-space systems; and humans in space.     Evaluating the faulty behavior of low-cost embedded microprocessor-based boards is an increasingly important issue, due to their adoption in many safety critical systems. The architecture of a complete Fault Injection environment is proposed, integrating a module for generating a collapsed list of faults, and another for performing their injection and gathering the results. To address this issue, the paper describes a software-implemented Fault Injection approach based on the Trace Exception Mode available in most microprocessors.     Dependability evaluation involves the study of failures and errors. The destructive nature of a crash and long error latency make it difficult to identify the causes of failures in the operational environment. It is particularly hard to recreate a failure scenario for a large, complex system. To identify and understand potential failures, we use an experiment-based approach for studying the dependability of a system. Such an approach is applied not only during the conception and design phases, but also during the prototype and operational phases. To take an experiment-based approach, we must first understand a system's architecture, structure, and behavior. Specifically, we need to know its tolerance for faults and failures, including its built-in detection and recovery mechanisms, and we need specific instruments and tools to inject faults, create failures or errors, and monitor their effects

    A Model-Based Framework to Assess the Reliability of Safety-Critical Applications

    Solutions based on artificial intelligence and brain-inspired computations like Artificial Neural Networks (ANNs) are suited to deal with the growing computational complexity required by state-of-the-art electronic devices. Many applications that are being deployed using these computational models are considered safety-critical (e.g., self-driving cars), producing a pressing need to evaluate their reliability. Besides, state-of-the-art ANNs require significant memory resources to store their parameters (e.g., weights, activation values), which goes outside the possibility of many resource-constrained embedded systems. In this light, Approximate Computing (AxC) has become a significant field of research to improve memory footprint, speed, and energy consumption in embedded and high-performance systems. The use of AxC can significantly reduce the cost of ANN implementations, but it may also reduce the inherent resiliency of this kind of application. On this scope, reliability assessments are carried out by performing fault injection test campaigns. The intent of the paper is to propose a framework that, relying on the results of radiation tests in Commercial-Off-The-Shelf (COTS) devices, is able to assess the reliability of a given application. To this end, a set of different radiation-induced errors in COTS memories is presented. Upon these, specific fault models are extracted to drive emulation-based fault injections

    Microprocessor-based embedded systems are increasingly used to control safety-critical systems (e.g., air and railway traffic control, nuclear plant control, aircraft and car control). In this case, fault tolerance mechanisms are introduced at the hardware and software level. Debugging and verifying the correct design and implementation of these mechanisms ask for effective environments, and Fault Injection represents a viable solution for their implementation. In this paper we present a Fault Injection environment, named FlexFI, suitable to assess the correctness of the design and implementation of the hardware and software mechanisms existing in embedded microprocessor-based systems, and to compute the fault coverage they provide.     This paper reviews an area which has evolved over the past 15 years: experimental analysis of computer system dependability. Methodologies and advances are discussed for three basic approaches used in the area: simulated fault injection, physical fault injection, and measurement-based analysis. The three approaches are suited, respectively, to dependability evaluation in the three phases of a system's life: design phase, prototype phase, and operational phase. Before the discussion of these phases, several statistical techniques used in the area are introduced. For each phase, a classification of research methods or study topics is outlined, followed by discussion of these methods or topics as well as representative studies. The statistical techniques introduced include the estimation of parameters and confidence intervals, probability distribution characterization, and several multivariate analysis methods. Importance sampling, a statistical technique used to accelerate Monte Carlo simulation, is also introduced. The discussion of simulated fault injection covers electrical-level, logic-level, and function-level fault injection methods as well as representative simulation environments such as FOCUS and DEPEND. The discussion of physical fault injection covers hardware, software, and radiation fault injection methods as well as several software and hybrid tools including FIAT, FERARI, HYBRID, and FINE. The discussion of measurement-based analysis covers measurement and data processing techniques, basic error characterization, dependency analysis, Markov reward modeling, software-dependability, and fault diagnosis.     Study of the effects of SEU-induced faults on a pipeline protected microprocessor

    This paper presents a detailed analysis of the behavior of a novel fault-tolerant 32-bit embedded CPU as compared to a default (non-fault-tolerant) implementation of the same processor during a fault injection campaign of single and double faults. The fault-tolerant processor tested is characterized by per-cycle voting of microarchitectural and the flop-based architectural states, redundancy at the pipeline level, and a distributed voting scheme. Its fault-tolerant behavior is characterized for three different workloads from the automotive application domain. The study proposes statistical methods for both the single and dual fault injection campaigns and demonstrates the fault-tolerant capability of both processors in terms of fault latencies, the probability of fault manifestation, and the behavior of latent faults

    Hardware fault injection is the widely accepted approach to evaluate the behavior of a circuit in the presence of faults. Thus, it plays a key role in the design of robust circuits. This chapter presents a comprehensive review of hardware fault injection techniques, including physical and logical approaches. The implementation of effective fault injection systems is also analyzed. Particular emphasis is made on the recently developed emulation-based techniques, which can provide large flexibility along with unprecedented levels of performance.
