Safe environments for innovation: developing a new multidisciplinary masters programme
This paper outlines the research and resulting curriculum design activities conducted as a collaborative venture between Northumbria University’s School of Design, School of Computing, Engineering and Information Sciences and Newcastle Business School undertaken in the creation of a new postgraduate programme in Multidisciplinary Design Innovation.
With the area of multidisciplinary innovation education practice being comparatively new, the research conducted in support of the programme development was undertaken through a series of industry-linked pilot-study projects conducted with Philips, Hasbro, Lego and Unilever. The key finding from this research was an understanding of the importance of freeing students from different disciplines of the inhibitions that limit creativity in collaborative settings.
This paper gives an account of the pilot studies and the associated learning derived from them, the collaborative development of the programme and approaches in curriculum and assessment design adopted in order to create what we call ‘safe environments for innovation’; environments designed to free students of these evident inhibitions
The role of inter-organizational collaboration within innovation strategies: towards a portfolio approach.
Within the innovation literature, inter-organizational collaboration is being advanced as instrumental for improving the innovative performance of firms. In addition inter-organizational collaboration can be instrumental for addressing the multiple requirements innovation strategies entail. At the same time - large scale - empirical evidence for such a relation is scarce. Within this paper we examine whether evidence can be found for the idea that inter-organizational collaboration supports the effectiveness of innovation strategies. Multivariate and Tobit analyses of data on Belgian manufacturing firms, collected by means of the CIS survey (n=221), reveals a positive relationship between inter-organizational collaboration and innovative performance. "We are always after that balance":managing innovation in the new digital media industry
The pressure to innovate is growing as technology cycles change more rapidly. Organisations need to balance exploration and exploitation effectively if they are to heed the innovation imperative. Organisational ambidexterity is proposed as a means to achieve such balance with structural or contextual ambidexterity as possible choices. Yet how organisations become ambidextrous is an as yet underresearched area, and different industry sectors may pose different innovation challenges. Using the case study method, this paper examines how a computer games company responds to an industry-specific innovation challenge and how it endeavours to balance exploration and exploitation. The findings suggest that ambidexterity is difficult to achieve, and is fraught with organisational tensions which might eventually jeopardise the innovation potential of a company. The paper suggests that more qualitative research is needed to further our understanding of innovation challenges, innovation management and organisational ambidexterity
institutional innovation from the bottom up?
A sustainable economy fulfills societal needs in a fundamentally different
way to the current economic system. Improvements to the efficiency of
existing technologies or practices appear insufficient for achieving
sustainable development within the planetary boundaries. Disruptive,
systemic and transformational changes appear necessary in order to replace
existing technologies and practices to establish a sustainable economy.
Such innovations often start out in niches; however, the scaling up and
the ultimate replacement of current socio-technical systems requires
governance to allow for the coordination of actors, the reorganization of
socio-technical systems and the mobilization and allocation of resources.
As governmental institutions are part of the current (non-sustainable)
systems and thereby fail to provide coherent, integrated and transformative
governance, we explore whether institutional innovation from non-state
actors can step in to provide governance of transformation processes.
Based on explorative qualitative case studies of networks in the food sector,
city planning and reporting tools, we analyze the potential of bottom-up
institutional innovations to coordinate actors in transformation processes
IT-Enabled Dynamic Capability Creation: A Perspective on Exploitative vs. Explorative IT Utilization
By focusing on today’s highly competitive and rapidly changing business environment, this study theorizes how organizations can create their dynamic capability from the utilization of information technology (IT) resources. The organizational exploitation and exploration perspective is adopted as the central theoretical basis of this study. A reflection on the exploitation and exploration of organizational IT management provides the possibility for theorizing multiple paths for IT-enabled dynamic capability creation. Under our theoretical development, the multiple paths involve different types of IT utilization capabilities that, in conjunction with organizational IT resources and other non-IT factors, lead to organizational dynamic capability. This study provides a theoretical basis for the role of IT in creating organizational dynamic capability. Specifically, it reveals the multiple types of interrelations between organizational IT resources and their utilization capabilities. This study serves as a basis for further empirical studies

The purpose of this study is to examine how firms deal with a situation of true uncertainty about their potential markets and technologies. Specifically, we ask how firms can create products when the corresponding market does not exist. Design/methodology/approach : This paper is based on a longitudinal study of a high-tech firm, combined with analysis of existing theory in Product Design and Entrepreneurship. Findings – Markets and products are usually a defining choice made early on by firms in their strategic process. Such a choice guides their development by providing a ‘stable concept' to which decisions can be related to. When markets do not exist yet, however, this approach is not effective: Early choice of products and markets limits firms' flexibility by constraining their ability and willingness to adapt, while fundamental new technical and market information is likely to emerge during the project that will prove the initial assumptions wrong."New Product Development";"uncertainty";"high-technology venture"

We suggest that this approach forms a robust design in that it allows the firm to deal with the uncertainty by simultaneously developing its products and exploring markets, while preserving the flexibility to adapt to the changing environment. Practical implications – The practical implication of this paper is to suggest an alternative approach to deliberate planning in high-tech ventures. With this approach, rather than markets and products, strategy defines a market and technology exploration process. Originality/value – The paper is original in three ways: 1) It links the product design and market exploration processes in high-tech firm development; 2) It is based on an in-depth longitudinal study; and 3) It results from an academic-practitioner collaborative work.New Product Development; uncertainty; high-technology venture.
Planting and harvesting innovation - an analysis of Samsung Electronics
This study explores how firms manage the entire life cycle of innovation projects based on the framework of harvesting and planting innovation. While harvesting innovation seeks new products in the expectation of financial performance in the short term, planting innovation pursues creating value over a long time period. Without proper management of the process of planting and harvesting innovation, firms with limited resources may not be successful in launching innovative new products to seize a momentum in high tech industries. To examine this issue, the case of Samsung Electronics (SE), now an electronics giant originated from a former developing country, is analyzed. SE has shown to effectively utilize co-innovation to maintain numerous planting and harvesting innovation projects. Both researchers and practitioners would be interested in learning about how SE shared risks of innovation investment with external partners at the early stage of innovation cycles
