    Distributed Hybrid Simulation of the Internet of Things and Smart Territories

    This paper deals with the use of hybrid simulation to build and compose heterogeneous simulation scenarios that can be proficiently exploited to model and represent the Internet of Things (IoT). Hybrid simulation is a methodology that combines multiple modalities of modeling/simulation. Complex scenarios are decomposed into simpler ones, each one being simulated through a specific simulation strategy. All these simulation building blocks are then synchronized and coordinated. This simulation methodology is an ideal one to represent IoT setups, which are usually very demanding, due to the heterogeneity of possible scenarios arising from the massive deployment of an enormous amount of sensors and devices. We present a use case concerned with the distributed simulation of smart territories, a novel view of decentralized geographical spaces that, thanks to the use of IoT, builds ICT services to manage resources in a way that is sustainable and not harmful to the environment. Three different simulation models are combined together, namely, an adaptive agent-based parallel and distributed simulator, an OMNeT++ based discrete event simulator and a script-language simulator based on MATLAB.     The discrete dynamics of small-scale spatial events: agent-based models of mobility in carnivals and street parades

    Small-scale spatial events are situations in which elements or objects vary in such away that temporal dynamics is intrinsic to their representation and explanation. Someof the clearest examples involve local movement from conventional traffic modelingto disaster evacuation where congestion, crowding, panic, and related safety issue arekey features of such events. We propose that such events can be simulated using newvariants of pedestrian model, which embody ideas about how behavior emerges fromthe accumulated interactions between small-scale objects. We present a model inwhich the event space is first explored by agents using ?swarm intelligence?. Armedwith information about the space, agents then move in an unobstructed fashion to theevent. Congestion and problems over safety are then resolved through introducingcontrols in an iterative fashion and rerunning the model until a ?safe solution? isreached. The model has been developed to simulate the effect of changing the route ofthe Notting Hill Carnival, an annual event held in west central London over 2 days inAugust each year. One of the key issues in using such simulation is how the processof modeling interacts with those who manage and control the event. As such, thischanges the nature of the modeling problem from one where control and optimizationis external to the model to one where this is intrinsic to the simulation

    Differential Private Data Collection and Analysis Based on Randomized Multiple Dummies for Untrusted Mobile Crowdsensing

    Mobile crowdsensing, which collects environmental information from mobile phone users, is growing in popularity. These data can be used by companies for marketing surveys or decision making. However, collecting sensing data from other users may violate their privacy. Moreover, the data aggregator and/or the participants of crowdsensing may be untrusted entities. Recent studies have proposed randomized response schemes for anonymized data collection. This kind of data collection can analyze the sensing data of users statistically without precise information about other users\u27 sensing results. However, traditional randomized response schemes and their extensions require a large number of samples to achieve proper estimation. In this paper, we propose a new anonymized data-collection scheme that can estimate data distributions more accurately. Using simulations with synthetic and real datasets, we prove that our proposed method can reduce the mean squared error and the JS divergence by more than 85% as compared with other existing studies

    Guide them through: an automatic crowd control framework using multi-objective genetic programming

    We propose an automatic crowd control framework based on multi-objective optimisa- tion of strategy space using genetic programming. In particular, based on the sensed local crowd densities at different segments, our framework is capable of generating control strategies that guide the individuals on when and where to slow down for opti- mal overall crowd flow in realtime, quantitatively measured by multiple objectives such as shorter travel time and less congestion along the path. The resulting Pareto-front al- lows selection of resilient and efficient crowd control strategies in different situations. We first chose a benchmark scenario as used in [1] to test the proposed method. Results show that our method is capable of finding control strategies that are not only quanti- tatively measured better, but also well aligned with domain experts’ recommendations on effective crowd control such as “slower is faster” and “asymmetric control”. We further applied the proposed framework in actual event planning with approximately 400 participants navigating through a multi-story building. In comparison with the baseline crowd models that do no employ control strategies or just use some hard-coded rules, the proposed framework achieves a shorter travel time and a significantly lower (20%) congestion along critical segments of the path

    Sensing Human Activity for Smart Cities’ Mobility Management

    Knowledge about human mobility patterns is the key element towards efficient mobility management. Traditionally, these data are collected by paper/phone household surveys or travel diaries and serve as input for transportation planning models. In this chapter, we report on current state-of-the-art techniques for sensing human activity and report on their applicability for smart city mobility management purposes. We particularly focus on the use of location-enabled devices and their potential towards replacing traditional data collection approaches. Furthermore, to illustrate applicability of smartphones as ubiquitous sensing devices we report on the use of Routecoach application that was used for mobility data collection in the city of Leuven, Belgium. We provide insights into lessons learned, ways in which collected data were used by different stakeholders, and identify existing gaps and future research needs in this field

    Unifying Threats Against Information Integrity In Participatory Crowd Sensing

    This article proposes a unified threat landscape for participatory crowd sensing (P-CS) systems. Specifically, it focuses on attacks from organized malicious actors that may use the knowledge of P-CS platform\u27s operations and exploit algorithmic weaknesses in AI-based methods of event trust, user reputation, decision-making, or recommendation models deployed to preserve information integrity in P-CS. We emphasize on intent driven malicious behaviors by advanced adversaries and how attacks are crafted to achieve those attack impacts. Three directions of the threat model are introduced, such as attack goals, types, and strategies. We expand on how various strategies are linked with different attack types and goals, underscoring formal definition, their relevance, and impact on the P-CS platform
