A Generic Network and System Management Framework
Networks and distributed systems have formed the basis of an ongoing communications revolution
that has led to the genesis of a wide variety of services. The constantly increasing size and
complexity of these systems does not come without problems. In some organisations, the
deployment of Information Technology has reached a state where the benefits from downsizing and
rightsizing by adding new services are undermined by the effort required to keep the system
running.
Management of networks and distributed systems in general has a straightforward goal: to provide
a productive environment in which work can be performed effectively. The work required for
management should be a small fraction of the total effort. Most IT systems are still managed in an
ad hoc style without any carefully elaborated plan. In such an environment the success of
management decisions depends totally on the qualification and knowledge of the administrator.
The thesis provides an analysis of the state of the art in the area of Network and System
Management and identifies the key requirements that must be addressed for the provisioning of
Integrated Management Services. These include the integration of the different management related
aspects (i.e. integration of heterogeneous Network, System and Service Management).
The thesis then proposes a new framework, INSMware, for the provision of Management Services.
It provides a fundamental basis for the realisation of a new approach to Network and System
Management. It is argued that Management Systems can be derived from a set of pre-fabricated
and reusable Building Blocks that break up the required functionality into a number of separate
entities rather than being developed from scratch. It proposes a high-level logical model in order to
accommodate the range of requirements and environments applicable to Integrated Network and
System Management that can be used as a reference model.
A development methodology is introduced that reflects principles of the proposed approach, and
provides guidelines to structure the analysis, design and implementation phases of a management
system. The INSMware approach can further be combined with the componentware paradigm for
the implementation of the management system. Based on these principles, a prototype for the
management of SNMP systems has been implemented using industry standard middleware
technologies. It is argued that development of a management system based on Componentware
principles can offer a number of benefits. INSMware Components may be re-used and system
solutions will become more modular and thereby easier to construct and maintain
The pros and cons of using SDL for creation of distributed services
In a competitive market for the creation of complex distributed services, time to market, development cost, maintenance and flexibility are key issues. Optimizing the development process is very much a matter of optimizing the technologies used during service creation. An Adaptive Integration Architecture for Software Reuse
The problem of building large, reliable software systems in a controlled, cost-effective way, the so-called software crisis problem, is one of computer science\u27s great challenges. From the very outset of computing as science, software reuse has been touted as a means to overcome the software crisis issue. Over three decades later, the software community is still grappling with the problem of building large reliable software systems in a controlled, cost effective way; the software crisis problem is alive and well. Today, many computer scientists still regard software reuse as a very powerful vehicle to improve the practice of software engineering. The advantage of amortizing software development cost through reuse continues to be a major objective in the art of building software, even though the tools, methods, languages, and overall understanding of software engineering have changed significantly over the years.
Our work is primarily focused on the development of an Adaptive Application Integration Architecture Framework. Without good integration tools and techniques, reuse is difficult and will probably not happen to any significant degree. In the development of the adaptive integration architecture framework, the primary enabling concept is object-oriented design supported by the unified modeling language. The concepts of software architecture, design patterns, and abstract data views are used in a structured and disciplined manner to established a generic framework. This framework is applied to solve the Enterprise Application Integration (EM) problem in the telecommunications operations support system (OSS) enterprise marketplace.
The proposed adaptive application integration architecture framework facilitates application reusability and flexible business process re-engineering. The architecture addresses the need for modern businesses to continuously redefine themselves to address changing market conditions in an increasingly competitive environment. We have developed a number of Enterprise Application Integration design patterns to enable the implementation of an EAI framework in a definite and repeatable manner. The design patterns allow for integration of commercial off-the-shelf applications into a unified enterprise framework facilitating true application portfolio interoperability. The notion of treating application services as infrastructure services and using business processes to combine them arbitrarily provides a natural way of thinking about adaptable and reusable software systems.
We present a mathematical formalism for the specification of design patterns. This specification constitutes an extension of the basic concepts from many-sorted algebra. In particular, the notion of signature is extended to that of a vector, consisting of a set of linearly independent signatures. The approach can be used to reason about various properties including efforts for component reuse and to facilitate complex largescale software development by providing the developer with design alternatives and support for automatic program verification
Application of fuzzy integrated FMEA with product lifetime consideration for new product development in flexible electronics industry
Purpose: the aim of this paper is to minimize the risks of new product development and shorten time-to-market, particularly for high-tech enterprise where the complexity of the product generates vast amount of failure mode. Design/methodology/approach: first, the concept of Critical Consideration Factor (CCF) is introduced based on product-specific technical characteristics, expected lifetime, and yield requirement to identify and prioritize the critical failure mode in the subsequent Failure Mode and Effect Analysis (FMEA), followed by process characterization on the high-risk failure mode and Critical Parameter Management (CPM) practice to realize a robust mass production system of the developed technology. The application on the development of advanced flexible substrate and surface finishes fabrication technique is presented. Findings: through the proposed methodology, the risk level of each potential failure mode can be accurately quantified to identify the critical variables. With process characterization, reliability of the product is ensured. Consequently, significant reduction in development resources and time-to-market can be achieved. Practical implications: the development strategy allows high tech enterprises to achieve a balanced ecosystem in which value created through adaption of new technology/product can be thoroughly captured through commercialization in a timely manner with no field failure. Originality/value: the proposed development strategy utilizes a unique approach with thorough considerations that enables high tech enterprise to deliver new product with rapid time-to-market without sacrificing product lifetime reliability, which is key to achieve competitive advantage in the highly dynamic market.Peer Reviewe

Prototyping a process-centered environment
This paper describes an experimental system developed and used as a vehicle for prototyping the Arcadia-1 software development environment. Prototyping is viewed as a knowledge acquisition process and is used to reduce risks in software development by gaining rapid feedback about the suitability of a production system before the system is completed. Prototyping a software development environment is particularly important due to the lack of experience with them. There is an acute need to acquire knowledge about user interaction requirements for software environments. These needs are especially important for the Arcadia project, as it is one of the first attempts to construct a process-centered environment. Our prototyping effort addresses questions about effective interaction with a process-centered environment by simulating how Arcadia-1 would interact with users in a representative range of usage scenarios. We built a prototyping system, called PRODUCER, and used it to generate a variety of prototypes simulating user interactions with Arcadia-1 process programs.Experience with PRODUCER indicates that our approach is effective at risk reduction. The prototypes greatly improved communication with our customer. They confirmed some of our design decisions but also redirected our research efforts as a result of unexpected insight. We also found that prototyping usage scenarios provides conceptual guides and design information for process programmers. Most of the benefits of our prototyping effort derive from developing and interacting with usage scenarios, so our approach is generalizable to other prototyping systems. Development of an image converter of radical design
A long term investigation of thin film sensors, monolithic photo-field effect transistors, and epitaxially diffused phototransistors and photodiodes to meet requirements to produce acceptable all solid state, electronically scanned imaging system, led to the production of an advanced engineering model camera which employs a 200,000 element phototransistor array (organized in a matrix of 400 rows by 500 columns) to secure resolution comparable to commercial television. The full investigation is described for the period July 1962 through July 1972, and covers the following broad topics in detail: (1) sensor monoliths; (2) fabrication technology; (3) functional theory; (4) system methodology; and (5) deployment profile. A summary of the work and conclusions are given, along with extensive schematic diagrams of the final solid state imaging system product

opportunities for more personalized services, improved security, greater automation and operational efficiency.
Industry and businesses who prioritize and modernize their analytics strategy and technology to monetize their
data will lead and succeed in our data-driven world. The network now provides even more detailed information
through units and equipment databases, which provide details about the installed equipment, including models,
designed capacity, performance and start / stop dates of the switches, routers, etc. repositories, digital files and
business websites. Access to these collections is a serious challenge. Artificial intelligence and the Semantic
Web provide a common framework for sharing and reusing knowledge in an efficient way. This article explores
the architecture of intelligent agents to make the argument of an intelligent solution as opposed to traditional
methods. We propose a new paradigm in which the intelligent management of the network is integrated into the
conceptual repository of management information. This study focuses on an intelligent framework and
language to formalize knowledge management descriptions and combine them with the existing SNMP
management model. Based on the present proposal and the Internet management model, we describe the design

An ICT-oriented Management Solution for NGNs
NGN architecture reused several standards from the IP world, as exemplified by the Session Initiation Protocol SIP, which is ubiquitous in the majority of these network components. However, the NGN management architecture simply presented a very generic management model that follows TMN. Several management technologies are proposed, such as Web services, CORBA and SNMP, to implement management solutions. Network and systems management standardizing bodies currently promote newer technologies that aim to solve known shortcomings to these. This paper proposes a management solution for NGNs based on recent IP world technologies. The presented solution was implemented in the form of a middleware to manage NGN elements.
