    Architectures and synchronization techniques for distributed satellite systems: a survey

    Cohesive Distributed Satellite Systems (CDSSs) is a key enabling technology for the future of remote sensing and communication missions. However, they have to meet strict synchronization requirements before their use is generalized. When clock or local oscillator signals are generated locally at each of the distributed nodes, achieving exact synchronization in absolute phase, frequency, and time is a complex problem. In addition, satellite systems have significant resource constraints, especially for small satellites, which are envisioned to be part of the future CDSSs. Thus, the development of precise, robust, and resource-efficient synchronization techniques is essential for the advancement of future CDSSs. In this context, this survey aims to summarize and categorize the most relevant results on synchronization techniques for Distributed Satellite Systems (DSSs). First, some important architecture and system concepts are defined. Then, the synchronization methods reported in the literature are reviewed and categorized. This article also provides an extensive list of applications and examples of synchronization techniques for DSSs in addition to the most significant advances in other operations closely related to synchronization, such as inter-satellite ranging and relative position. The survey also provides a discussion on emerging data-driven synchronization techniques based on Machine Learning (ML).     Location awareness is vital for emerging Internetof- Things applications and opens a new era for Localizationof- Things. This paper first reviews the classical localization techniques based on single-value metrics, such as range and angle estimates, and on fixed measurement models, such as Gaussian distributions with mean equal to the true value of the metric. Then, it presents a new localization approach based on soft information (SI) extracted from intra- and inter-node measurements, as well as from contextual data. In particular, efficient techniques for learning and fusing different kinds of SI are described. Case studies are presented for two scenarios in which sensing measurements are based on: 1) noisy features and non-line-of-sight detector outputs and 2) IEEE 802.15.4a standard. The results show that SI-based localization is highly efficient, can significantly outperform classical techniques, and provides robustness to harsh propagation conditions.RYC-2016-1938

    Investigation of optical wireless for employment within a vehicular environment

    The substantial increase in powerful electronic systems and functions has produced significant implications for the vehicular industry, where the amount of wiring infrastructure has increased the vehicle weight, weakened performance, and made adherence to reliability standards difficult. Eventually, connecting the electronics infrastructure was mostly complicated and costly in vehicular domain systems. Thus, little research has been conducted to explore appropriate wireless technologies that may be suitable with the emerging network standard within the context of vehicular networks. This thesis describes an in-depth investigation of deploying an optical wireless communication system within the vehicular environment, particularly in confined spaces. A wide variety of measurements has been performed using tubes of various materials and geometries, in a laboratory setup. The principle objective is to provide a primary knowledge of optical wireless channel characterization within a laboratory vehicular setting. The work presented is a study on directed line-of-sight (LOS) and non-LOS (NLOS) links, and focuses on frequency response, power efficiencies, and path losses in different experimental settings. Further, a variety of experimental settings was used in respect to different receiver/transmitter orientations and various bent tubes angles in order to investigate the channel conditions. The noise analysis, xviii SNR, path loss and the eye pattern for the digital system prototype designed were also analysed. The system requirement for the LOS link were based on the transmission of the sinusoidal signal at a distance of 1 m with 13 MHz signal and approximately 15.6 dB SNR. Successful demonstration of the OWC within smaller size and high reflection coefficient material are promising. In addition to good transmitter and high sensitivity receiver. The NLOS link also demonstrated a good indication, both in straight tube with angled transmitter/receiver orientation and bend tubes. Detail studies on NLOS link with pulse signal transmission, which replicates a digital system transmission with 54.48mW or 44.58 mW/cm2 output power,6 MHz signal transmission with the aim of 10-4 to 10-6 BER. Although, the operational functionality of digital system has successfully demonstrated, however achieving the desired BER is a bit difficult with the designed system. Further improvement on the highly sensitive receiver design, a proper modulation scheme is required in order to improve the quality of the transmitted signal in terms of SNR and BER. The study also suggested that the transmission within the metal tubes is better than in plastic tubes in addition to minimum bend angle, smaller tube diameter and high reflective coefficient. Transmission within 20 mm circular aluminium tube and 35 mm galvanised aluminium tube are the best so far. Finally, based on the initial viability results, it was seen that it is possible to implement an optical wireless communication infrastructure within the vehicular environment. Experimental validation of the system proposed shows that achieving high data rates is not a problem with the use of high brightness, high power LEDs as this system is xix going to be implemented within the vehicle chassis, thus the eye safety constraints should not be a limiting factor. Therefore, in this study, optical wireless transmission within the vehicular environment is proposed, solving the problems of vehicular networking systems

    Multi-antenna non-line-of-sight identification techniques for target localization in mobile ad-hoc networks

    Target localization has a wide range of military and civilian applications in wireless mobile networks. Examples include battle-field surveillance, emergency 911 (E911), traffc alert, habitat monitoring, resource allocation, routing, and disaster mitigation. Basic localization techniques include time-of-arrival (TOA), direction-of-arrival (DOA) and received-signal strength (RSS) estimation. Techniques that are proposed based on TOA and DOA are very sensitive to the availability of Line-of-sight (LOS) which is the direct path between the transmitter and the receiver. If LOS is not available, TOA and DOA estimation errors create a large localization error. In order to reduce NLOS localization error, NLOS identifcation, mitigation, and localization techniques have been proposed. This research investigates NLOS identifcation for multiple antennas radio systems. The techniques proposed in the literature mainly use one antenna element to enable NLOS identifcation. When a single antenna is utilized, limited features of the wireless channel can be exploited to identify NLOS situations. However, in DOA-based wireless localization systems, multiple antenna elements are available. In addition, multiple antenna technology has been adopted in many widely used wireless systems such as wireless LAN 802.11n and WiMAX 802.16e which are good candidates for localization based services. In this work, the potential of spatial channel information for high performance NLOS identifcation is investigated. Considering narrowband multiple antenna wireless systems, two xvNLOS identifcation techniques are proposed. Here, the implementation of spatial correlation of channel coeffcients across antenna elements as a metric for NLOS identifcation is proposed. In order to obtain the spatial correlation, a new multi-input multi-output (MIMO) channel model based on rough surface theory is proposed. This model can be used to compute the spatial correlation between the antenna pair separated by any distance. In addition, a new NLOS identifcation technique that exploits the statistics of phase difference across two antenna elements is proposed. This technique assumes the phases received across two antenna elements are uncorrelated. This assumption is validated based on the well-known circular and elliptic scattering models. Next, it is proved that the channel Rician K-factor is a function of the phase difference variance. Exploiting Rician K-factor, techniques to identify NLOS scenarios are proposed. Considering wideband multiple antenna wireless systems which use MIMO-orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) signaling, space-time-frequency channel correlation is exploited to attain NLOS identifcation in time-varying, frequency-selective and spaceselective radio channels. Novel NLOS identi?cation measures based on space, time and frequency channel correlation are proposed and their performances are evaluated. These measures represent a better NLOS identifcation performance compared to those that only use space, time or frequency

    Antenna Designs for 5G/IoT and Space Applications

Some of the contributors are working strictly in the field (space), so they have a very targeted view on the subjects, while others with a more academic background, proposes futuristic solutions.
