Towards European Portuguese Conversational Assistants for Smart Homes
Nowadays, smart environments, such as Smart Homes, are becoming a reality, due to the access to a wide variety of smart devices at a low cost. These devices are connected to the home network and inhabitants can interact with them using smartphones, tablets and smart assistants, a feature with rising popularity. The diversity of devices, the user\u27s expectations regarding Smart Homes, and assistants\u27 requirements pose several challenges. In this context, a Smart Home Assistant capable of conversation and device integration can be a valuable help to the inhabitants, not only for smart device control, but also to obtain valuable information and have a broader picture of how the house and its devices behave. This paper presents the current stage of development of one such assistant, targeting European Portuguese, not only supporting the control of home devices, but also providing a potentially more natural way to access a variety of information regarding the home and its devices. The development has been made in the scope of Smart Green Homes (SGH) project
With the increase of technology present in our daily routine, a specific area
rose exponentially. Spoken dialogue systems are increasingly popular and
useful: they provide an easier and more versatile access to large and diverse
sets of information.
Nowadays there is a vast knowledge base regarding this topic, as well as different
systems capable of performing numerous tasks just by simply processing
voice input. There are also an increasing set of tools for their development.
Despite recent advances, development of dialog systems continues to be challenging.
The main objective of this thesis is to contribute and make possible
and simple the development of new dialogue systems for Portuguese: by selecting,
adapting and combining existing tools/frameworks.
Supported by the enhancements made to the selected basis framework, two
different dialog systems were developed: the first is an assistant aimed at a
Smart Home environment - one of areas that benefited the most with the development
of dialog systems - and the second targeting accessible tourism.
The first assistant was developed aligned with the Smart Green Homes
project. It implied the definition of scenarios and requirements that later helped
defining the ontology and the system. Another requirement for this system
was the inclusion of the back-end system developed previously as part of the
Smart Green Homes project.
The second was aligned with the project ACTION in the area of Tourism. It
was developed for users with accessibility needs, e.g., impaired movement or
vision.
português: selecionando, adaptando e combinando ferramentas existentes.
a definir a ontologia e o sistema. Outro requisito para este sistema foi
a inclusão do sistema back-end desenvolvido anteriormente como parte do
projeto Smart Green Homes.
Smart speakers and the news in Portuguese: consumption pattern and challenges for content producers
The voice assistants popularized by smartphones are now the driving force behind a device that is making its way into homes in recent years: smart speakers. Since 2018, these devices are available in Brazilian Portuguese. These devices are also a new platform for news distribution and consumption. How does the platform define the content that will be delivered to the user? What challenges do content producers face? How does the user access this news? To try to find the answers to these questions, we conducted a literature review, a market situation point through business reports, developed an online survey with smart speaker users and also interviewed content producers. The answers show that there is influence of algorithms and the business model. An extra challenge for Portuguese content producers is the language itself. The voice assistant systems still have difficulty understanding words and expressions in Portuguese for users. This work may be helpful for content producers, especially Portuguese-speaking ones, to find ways to reach their audience.
The Last Decade of HCI Research on Children and Voice-based Conversational Agents
Voice-based Conversational Agents (CAs) are increasingly being used by children. Through a review of 38 research papers, this work maps trends, themes, and methods of empirical research on children and CAs in HCI research over the last decade. A thematic analysis of the research found that work in this domain focuses on seven key topics: ascribing human-like qualities to CAs, CAs’ support of children’s learning, the use and role of CAs in the home and family context, CAs’ support of children’s play, children’s storytelling with CA, issues concerning the collection of information revealed by CAs, and CAs designed for children with differing abilities. Based on our findings, we identify the needs to account for children's intersectional identities and linguistic and cultural diversity and theories from multiple disciples in the design of CAs, develop heuristics for child-centric interaction with CAs, to investigate implications of CAs on social cognition and interpersonal relationships, and to examine and design for multi-party interactions with CAs for different domains and contexts
The dawn of the human-machine era: a forecast of new and emerging language technologies
New language technologies are coming, thanks to the huge and competing private investment fuelling rapid progress; we can either understand and foresee their effects, or be taken by surprise and spend our time trying to catch up. This report scketches out some transformative new technologies that are likely to fundamentally change our use of language. Some of these may feel unrealistically futuristic or far-fetched, but a central purpose of this report - and the wider LITHME network - is to illustrate that these are mostly just the logical development and maturation of technologies currently in prototype. But will everyone benefit from all these shiny new gadgets? Throughout this report we emphasise a range of groups who will be disadvantaged and issues of inequality. Important issues of security and privacy will accompany new language technologies. A further caution is to re-emphasise the current limitations of AI. Looking ahead, we see many intriguing opportunities and new capabilities, but a range of other uncertainties and inequalities. New devices will enable new ways to talk, to translate, to remember, and to learn. But advances in technology will reproduce existing inequalities among those who cannot afford these devices, among the world's smaller languages, and especially for sign language. Debates over privacy and security will flare and crackle with every new immersive gadget. We will move together into this curious new world with a mix of excitement and apprehension - reacting, debating, sharing and disagreeing as we always do. Plug in, as the human-machine era dawn
Drivers of smart speakers' advertising acceptance
The growing impact of technology on marketing communications is inevitable. That is why
brands need to achieve the vision of these new technologies, which are becoming the new
channels of communication and purchasing, to get closer to the consumer.
Artificial Intelligence and, consequently, smart speakers are becoming one of the major
trends in marketing, bringing benefits not only for brands but also for consumers. Thus, this
study explores what factors may impact the acceptance of receiving advertising through these
devices.
This study's objective focuses on 329 Portuguese consumers' responses and uses a partial
least square structural equation modelling to conduct an empirical study. The results indicate
that the channel’s acceptance has a significant impact on consumers' acceptance of advertising
and the hedonic motivations. However, it demonstrates that the perceived value and trust of
advertising do not significantly impact its acceptance.
The study suggests that smart speakers should benefit their users and have added functions
that allow interaction with what is being advertised. Besides, the content that brands want to
advertise should be relevant and contain information related to users' interests to generate
The tourism sector has been growing exponentially in Portugal over the last few years, becoming increasingly competitive. On the other hand, the use of machines, robots and artificial intelligence in this industry that is built by and for people, has also been increasing and diversifying.
The objective of this investigation focuses on the study of variables that can affect the acceptance of robots by the Portuguese public. The Technology Acceptance Model (TAM) is applied to understand the influence of a set of sociodemographic variables, travel behavior, motivation, and attitude towards technology in general in the perceived ease of use and perceived usefulness of using robots in tourism.
The results obtained demonstrate that the Portuguese case is similar to that of other Western countries, with gender, age, travel group, motivation and attitude towards technology having a significant impact on the dependent variables.O setor do turismo em Portugal tem vindo a crescer exponencialmente nos últimos anos, tornando-se cada vez mais competitivo.
