What makes a “new classical” band stand out? C omposition chops and entrepreneurial hustle. Missy Mazzoli’s all-female quintet Victoire personifies a dreamy post-rock sensibility. William Brittelle’s Television Landscape embraces a big-band sonic eclecticism. And the aggressively creative NOW Ensemble, featuring compositions by Judd Greenstein, defines 21st-century chamber music. These bands have their act together!https://digitalcommons.montclair.edu/peak-performances-2010-2011/1002/thumbnail.jp

'There be dragons': redrawing the curriculum map in Wales

First paragraph: The 2015 publication of Successful Futures marked a watershed moment in the history of education in Wales. The proposed new curriculum is a radical departure from recent top-down, teacher proof policy. It moves schools away from prescriptive content-led approaches to teaching, and affords teachers and schools considerable autonomy in developing a school-based curriculum to meet local needs.Output Type: Blog Pos

Here, There be Dragons: A Practitioner Explores Feminist Poststructuralist Theory

Here, There be Dragons: A Practitioner Explores Feminist Poststructuralist Theory In ancient times, it is told, cartographers would write the phrase, “Here, there be dragons” on their maps in order to indicate unknown, unexplored territory beyond the boundaries of what was already discovered. Such a phrase connotes mystique and danger and can raise the specter of fear for those who dare travel into uncharted territory. As an explorer of the intellectual variety, I have had my own encounter with the margins of my known world and have wondered how I might deal with the trouble I met along the way. My journey took me from a comfortable place in the largely realist world of hospital nursing practice and management to a meeting with feminist poststructuralist theory in the form of a doctoral level course. In this article, I examine my encounter with new theory, framing my analysis with work on the pedagogy of theory by both Roger Simon and Laurie Finke in order to consider how I have applied this theory in my work and suggest how my insights might benefit other students and teachers of theory

The five papers in this special issue share the perspective that attitudes toward risk are strongly shaped by social context, and that understanding context can help us understand how risk decisions are made, and thereby how to make them better

This study implemented a convergent parallel mixed methods approach to investigate game-based learning within an educational game compared to a modified entertainment game. Participants (N=31) were recruited from public middle and high schools as well as home school groups. Comparative data of participants’ perceptions, preferences and learning outcomes were investigated to inform better educational game design. This study also considers player personality to determine how dispositional curiosity influences an individual’s approach, acceptance, and interaction with novel learning environments, specifically games. Findings show a statistically significant gain in genetics academic knowledge after the game-based learning intervention. The difference in knowledge gained for the two games was not statistically significant. All dimensions of engagement, motivation and curiosity were statistically significantly higher for the modified entertainment game. Increases in scientific curiosity was statistically significantly higher for the modified entertainment game while scientific curiosity statistically significantly decreased after playing the educational game. Qualitative analysis revealed five themes and provided deeper understanding of game design features that enhance learning, curiosity and engagement from the player’s perception. Integration of quantitative and qualitative results suggest overall convergence and enhanced understanding of theoretical and practical implications of this research and identifies key relationships between game design, player perceptions and learning outcomes to inform better educational game design and implementation

This report documents the work of the Creative Informatics Creative Horizons 4: There be Dragons project. The There Be Dragons project starts from the premise that data can empower creative businesses to do more and to do it better. Data can be used for creative practice, with creative practice, and to tell us about creative practice. However, coping with data is not a simple or straightforward activity. It has to be collected, analysed, visualised, understood and communicated. There are ethical and privacy issues to consider. The project aimed to investigate and untangle some of these messy issues in order to build a representative picture of the role that data plays in the life of the creative practitioner. The work wasfunded under the Creative Horizon strand of the Creative Informatics project, with the goal of supporting blue sky research on the creative industries

    The Evolution of Dragons

Dragons have been depicted in human art as early as 4500 BCE. For centuries, these fantasy creatures have inspired countless folk and fantasy tales, as well as appearing in the art of different cultures around the world. Now there are thousands of different depictions of these huge, flying, fire-breathing lizards, but are any of them possible? In this study, I reference peer-reviewed scientific articles, phylogenetic analysis, and paleoart studies to create biologically-sound dragons. Basing the dragon lineage on a real branch of webbed-winged scansoriopterygids—an extinct family of climbing and gliding maniraptoran dinosaurs—I explored the possible wing-structure, fire-breathing abilities, and effects of adaptive radiation on these hypothetical dragons. My research, compiled in an illustrated and easy to read book, will be both entertaining and educational. Catching the attention of readers with the idea of scientifically correct dragons, I will then take them on an enlightening journey through evolutionary biology concepts like homology, convergent evolution, and alternate evolution. It is important to educate the public on basic biology so that they better understand the scientific (or unscientific) research they are shown on media, helping to bridge the communication gap between scientists and the public
