Starfished in the sand : developing the theory of planned behaviour to predict intentions to use sunscreen on the beach : a research project presented in partial fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Arts in Psychology at Massey University, Albany, Auckland, New Zealand
This study examined the predictive power of the theory of planned behaviour in explaining sunscreen use intentions among beach-goers in New Zealand (n = 148) and the United Kingdom (n = 280). Generally, the theory of planned behaviour performed well with attitudes, subjective norms and perceived behavioural control explaining 54.8% (NZ) and 39.5% (UK) of the variability in intention. In addition to the theory of planned behaviour constructs, several other variables were included to enhance the models predictive power. The concepts of descriptive norm, implementation intentions, outcome expectancy, anticipated regret, past behaviour, global self-esteem and conscientiousness were investigated. Implementation intentions, past behaviour and anticipated regret contributed significantly to the theory of planned behaviour in predicting sunscreen use intentions. In addition, partial mediation of the theory of planned behaviour constructs was found by implementation intentions. Interaction effects were evident between past behaviour and perceived behavioural control in the UK sample. Implications for further investigation of the concept of anticipated regret and including a measure of self-identity are discussed

Interviews of deshopping behaviour: An analysis of theory of planned behaviour
Research reveals alarming results on the prevalence of the dishonest consumer
behaviour known as deshopping. Deshopping is the
âdeliberate return of goods for reasons other than actual faults in the product,
in its pure form premeditated prior to and during the consumption
experience.â

In effect this means buying something with no intention of keeping it (Schmidt et al.,

Applications of the theory of planned behaviour to drivers' speeding behaviour
The theory of planned behaviour (TPB; Ajzen, 1985, 1988, 1991) provides apotentially useful approach for investigating the links between drivers' attitudes andbehaviour and for informing road safety interventions that aim to promote 'safe' driving. This paper presents a review of previous research studies in which the TPBhas been applied to drivers'speeding behaviour. Some conceptual andmethodological limitations of the studies are raised. We then summarise two studiesthat we have recently conducted to overcome these limitations and discuss theimplications for road safety
Myopia, customer returns and the theory of planned behaviour
As a prevalent and growing form of customer behaviour, deshopping is on the
rise. Retailers' focus on good customer service and the offering of lenient
returns polices has led to the growth in this fraudulent behaviour of customers
in returning goods. This paper considers retailer myopia in the context of
dishonest customer returns, applying the Theory of Planned Behaviour (TPB) using
a quantitative questionnaire with 535 female consumers. The findings highlight
the extent of the behaviour with 50% admitting to partaking in deshopping. The
TPB variables can be utilised to manage and prevent deshopping. The results
indicate that currently these customers perceive it to be easy to deshop as
there are no consequences with the result that such behaviour continues to grow.
If retailers were less myopic they would monitor returns more thoroughly and
make it less easy for such customers to get away with undesirable deshopping
behaviour. The paper makes recommendations for retailers to manage or alter
perceived behavioural characteristics for customers, which in turn, would reduce
tendencies for dishonesty in customers returning goods for refunds. Retail
myopia is evident with deshopping behaviour with consequences for retailers in
time, effort and costs

An Examination of the Volitional Stages in Consumer Decisions to Avoid Sweatshop Clothing
While much research in ethical consumption has focused on contexts such as food, this research explores ethical consumer decision-making in the context of intention to avoid sweatshop clothing where consumer concern has increased but response from the market remains limited. This research seeks to deepen the theory of planned behaviour with respect to the volitional stages underlying behaviour. The findings of the research support a modified theory of planned behaviour model and also reveal volitional stages from intention to trying and plan which reveal the stages of consumer decision-making to avoid sweatshop clothing. Implications for consumer decision-making are discussed
Use of mental simulations to change theory of planned behaviour variables
Objectives. The predictive validity of the theory of planned behaviour iswell established, but much less is known about: (a) whether there are causal relationships between key components of the model and (b) how to go about changing the theory of planned behaviour variables. This study tested the ability of outcome and process simulations to change variables specified in the theory of planned behaviour in relation to blood donation.
Design. Participants (N Œ 146) were randomized to one of four conditions: outcome simulation only, process simulation only, process-plus-outcome simulation and a
distractor control condition. The dependent variables were state anxiety, and intention attitude, subjective norm and perceived control from the theory of planned behaviour.
Methods. Participants were asked to empty their mind and visualize themselves: (a) after donating blood (outcome manipulation), (b) preparing to donate blood (process manipulation), (c) both preparing to donate blood and after having donated blood (process-plus-outcome manipulation) or (d) both preparing to get a high mark and after having got a high mark on their course (control condition). Following mental rehearsal, participants completed the dependent variables.
Results. There were no main effects of outcome simulation, but process simulation successfully increased intention, subjective norm and perceived control. There was also a significant outcome simulation x process simulation interaction for attitude. The effect of the process manipulation on intention was mediated by subjective norm and perceived control.
Conclusions. The findings show promise for the use of mental simulations in changing cognitions and further research is required to extend the present findings to
other health behaviours.</p
Help seeking in the New Zealand Defence Force using the Theory of Planned Behaviour : a thesis presented in partial fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Masters of Science in Psychology at Massey University, Albany, New Zealand
Mental health is of utmost importance in military settings due to the demanding and often dangerous nature of the work involved. However, military personnel are disproportionately deterred from seeking mental health help when the need arises. Perceived stigma and structural barriers to help seeking have been widely researched in military settings, however, results are often mixed. The current study examined the traditional stigma and structural barriers help seeking model alongside an alternative model of the Theory of Planned Behaviour to explain help seeking behaviour. A cross-sectional study design surveying 2633 enlisted New Zealand Defence Force Personnel was carried out. Within the two models, attitudes, subjective norms, perceived behavioural control, stigma, and structural barriers were assessed as predictors of intentions to seek professional help for mental health problems. The Theory of Planned Behaviour model accounted for 26% of total variance in help seeking intentions, while the traditional model only accounted for 7%. Additionally, the Theory of Planned Behaviour model showed potential for its capacity to include stigma and structural barriers as antecedents to its core predictors, with stigma being partially mediated by attitudes, and structural barriers being fully mediated by perceived behavioural control.
Additional group level measures were also considered in relation to help seeking intentions which highlighted at risk groups. A common theme arose across these groups of less chances for both formal and informal learning opportunities about mental health help seeking in the defence force. Using these group level differences, recommendations for how the Theory of Planned Behaviour can be utilized to increase mental health learning experiences for the New Zealand Defence Force personnel are made. Specifically, the potential efficacy of incorporating the sharing of highly ranked personnelâs positive experiences of help seeking early on in new recruits training
Predicting the consumption of foods low in saturated fats among people diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease: the role of planning in the theory of planned behaviour
The present study tested the utility of an extended version of the theory of planned behaviour that included a measure of planning, in the prediction of eating foods low in saturated fats among adults diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes and/or cardiovascular disease Participants (N = 184) completed questionnaires assessing standard theory of planned behaviour measures (attitude, subjective norm, and perceived behavioural control) and the additional volitional variable of planning in relation to eating foods low in saturated fats Self-report consumption of foods low insaturated fats was assessed 1 month later In partial support of the theory of planned behaviour, results indicated that attitude and subjective norm predicted intentions to eat foods low in saturated fats and intentions and perceived behavioural control predicted the consumption of foods low in saturated fats As an additional variable, planning predicted the consumption of foods low in saturated fats directly and also mediated the intention-behaviour and perceived behavioural control-behaviour relationships, suggesting an important role for planning as a post-intentional construct determining healthy eating choices. Suggestions are offered for interventions designed to improve adherence to healthy eating recommendations for people diagnosed with these chronic conditions with a specific emphasis on the steps and activities that are required to promote a healthier lifestyle. Why are male students less likely to opt for social science courses? : a theory-driven analysis

While the conceptual base of our analysis includes the theory of planned behaviour and theories centring on gender role orientations, the empirical base is a random cluster sample of high-school graduates in Switzerland. The results show different gender effects, as well as direct and indirect effects, for all the theory of planned behaviour factors. Gender role orientations and the question of how a social science profession fits oneâs own gender identity appear to be of particular importance only among male students
Theory of Planned Behaviour and Pro-environmental Intention: Russian, Australian and Chinese Tourists in Phuket, Thailand
As environmental problems keep being concerned by many parties, not only actors in the production side are accused as roots of the problem, the consumer side should not also be neglected. Since it has been suggested that pro-environmental intention will probably lead to some responsible behavior, this study aims to explore factors influencing consumersâ pro-environmental behavioral intention by applying the framework of the theory of planned behavior (TPB). The study focused on exploring the behavior of international tourists from Russia, Australia and China who travel in Phuket Province, Thailand. The result of multiple regression analysis indicated that all factors were positively predictors of pro-environmental intention. Perceived behavioral control provided the highest impact (Beta = 0.543) whereas attitude toward pro-environmental behavior (Beta = 0.140) and subjective norms (Beta = 0.140) provided the lower impact and finally, perceived value (Beta = 0.087) provided the lowest impact
