Massive MIMO-based Localization and Mapping Exploiting Phase Information of Multipath Components
In this paper, we present a robust multipath-based localization and mapping
framework that exploits the phases of specular multipath components (MPCs)
using a massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) array at the base
station. Utilizing the phase information related to the propagation distances
of the MPCs enables the possibility of localization with extraordinary accuracy
even with limited bandwidth. The specular MPC parameters along with the
parameters of the noise and the dense multipath component (DMC) are tracked
using an extended Kalman filter (EKF), which enables to preserve the
distance-related phase changes of the MPC complex amplitudes. The DMC comprises
all non-resolvable MPCs, which occur due to finite measurement aperture. The
estimation of the DMC parameters enhances the estimation quality of the
specular MPCs and therefore also the quality of localization and mapping. The
estimated MPC propagation distances are subsequently used as input to a
distance-based localization and mapping algorithm. This algorithm does not need
prior knowledge about the surrounding environment and base station position.
The performance is demonstrated with real radio-channel measurements using an
antenna array with 128 ports at the base station side and a standard cellular
signal bandwidth of 40 MHz. The results show that high accuracy localization is
possible even with such a low bandwidth.Comment: 14 pages (two columns), 13 figures. This work has been submitted to

Implementation of improvements of the Wi-Fi network of the RTBF and implementation of a Wi-Fi network for an “intelligent” building
Este Trabajo de Fin de Grado se ha realizado dentro de la Radio Televisión Belga Francófona (RTBF)
en Bruselas. El objetivo de este proyecto es el diseño de una red Wi-Fi completamente confiable y de
alto rendimiento para una de sus localizaciones.
Para empezar, se completaron un estudio teórico y mediciones reales. La comparación entre el estudio
teórico y práctico no estaba concluyente por lo que las predicciones teóricas se han modificado para
corresponder a la realidad.
Finalmente, la RTBF está construyendo un nuevo edificio en 2022 para el cual un estudio predictivo
teórico se ha hecho para proporcionar una cantidad de puntos de accesos necesarios para una cobertura
completa.This End-of-Grade work have been done inside the Francophone Belgian Radio-Television (RTBF) in
Brussels. The goal of this Project is to design a fully reliable and performant Wi-Fi network for one of
their localization.
To begin with, a theorical study and real-life measurements were completed. The comparasion between
the theorical and practical study was not concluding so the theorical predictions have been changed to
correspond to reality.
Finally, the RTBF is constructing a new building in 2022 for which a theorical predictive study have

Physical limitations on wireless communication channels impose huge challenges to reliable communication. Bandwidth limitations, propagation loss, noise and interference make the wireless channel a narrow pipe that does not readily accommodate rapid flow of data. Thus, researches aim to design systems that are suitable to operate in such channels, in order to have high performance quality of service. Also, the mobility of the communication systems requires further investigations to reduce the complexity and the power consumption of the receiver. Analysis and Ad-hoc Networking Solutions for Cooperative Relaying Systems
Users of mobile networks are increasingly demanding higher data rates from
their service providers. To cater to this demand, various signal processing
and networking algorithms have been proposed. Amongst them the multiple
input multiple output (MIMO) scheme of wireless communications is one of
the most promising options. However, due to certain physical restrictions,
e.g., size, it is not possible for many devices to have multiple antennas
on them. Also, most of the devices currently in use are single-antenna
devices. Such devices can make use of the MIMO scheme by employing
cooperative MIMO methods. This involves nearby nodes utilizing the antennas
of each other to form virtual antenna arrays (VAAs). Nodes with limited
communication ranges can further employ multi-hopping to be able to
communicate with far away nodes. However, an ad-hoc communications scheme
with cooperative MIMO multi-hopping can be challenging to implement because
of its de-centralized nature and lack of a centralized controling entity
such as a base-station. This thesis looks at methods to alleviate the
problems faced by such networks.In the first part of this thesis, we look,
analytically, at the relaying scheme under consideration and derive closed
form expressions for certain performance measures (signal to noise ratio
(SNR), symbol error rate (SER), bit error rate (BER), and capacity) for the
co-located and cooperative multiple antenna schemes in different relaying
configurations (amplify-and-forward and decode-and-forward) and different
antenna configurations (single input single output (SISO), single input
multiple output (SIMO) and MIMO). These expressions show the importance of
reducing the number of hops in multi-hop communications to achieve a better
performance. We can also see the impact of different antenna configurations
and different transmit powers on the number of hops through these
simplified expressions.We also look at the impact of synchronization errors
on the cooperative MIMO communications scheme and derive a lower bound of
the SINR and an expression for the BER in the high SNR regime. These
expressions can help the network designers to ensure that the quality of
service (QoS) is satisfied even in the worst-case scenarios. In the second
part of the thesis we present some algorithms developed by us to help the
set-up and functioning of cluster-based ad-hoc networks that employ
cooperative relaying. We present a clustering algorithm that takes into
account the battery status of nodes in order to ensure a longer network
life-time. We also present a routing mechanism that is tailored for use in
cooperative MIMO multi-hop relaying. The benefits of both schemes are shown
through simulations.A method to handle data in ad-hoc networks using
distributed hash tables (DHTs) is also presented. Moreover, we also present
a physical layer security mechanism for multi-hop relaying. We also analyze
the physical layer security mechanism for the cooperative MIMO scheme. This
analysis shows that the cooperative MIMO scheme is more beneficial than
co-located MIMO in terms of the information theoretic limits of the

Dienstleistern. Um diesem Bedarf gerecht zu werden, wurden verschiedene
Signalverarbeitungsalgorithmen entwickelt. Dabei ist das "Multiple input
multiple output" (MIMO)-Verfahren für die drahtlose Kommunikation eine der
vielversprechendsten Techniken. Jedoch ist aufgrund bestimmter
physikalischer Beschränkungen, wie zum Beispiel die Baugröße, die
Verwendung von mehreren Antennen für viele Endgeräte nicht möglich. Dennoch
können solche Ein-Antennen-Geräte durch den Einsatz kooperativer
MIMO-Verfahren von den Vorteilen des MIMO-Prinzips profitieren.
Dabei schließen sich naheliegende Knoten zusammen um ein sogenanntes
virtuelles Antennen-Array zu bilden. Weiterhin können Knoten mit
beschränktem Kommunikationsbereich durch mehrere Hops mit weiter
entfernten Knoten kommunizieren. Allerdings stellt der Aufbau eines solchen
Ad-hoc-Netzwerks mit kooperativen MIMO-Fähigkeiten aufgrund der dezentralen
Natur und das Fehlen einer zentral-steuernden Einheit, wie einer
Basisstation, eine große Herausforderung dar. Diese Arbeit befasst sich mit
den Problemstellungen dieser Netzwerke und bietet verschiedene
Lösungsansätze.Im ersten Teil dieser Arbeit werden analytisch in
sich geschlossene Ausdrücke für ein kooperatives
Relaying-System bezüglicher verschiedener Metriken, wie das
Signal-Rausch-Verhältnis, die Symbolfehlerrate, die Bitfehlerrate und die
Kapazität, hergeleitet. Dabei werden die "Amplify-and forward" und
"Decode-and-forward" Relaying-Protokolle, sowie unterschiedliche
Mehrantennen-Konfigurationen, wie "Single input single output" (SISO),
"Single input multiple output" (SIMO) und MIMO betrachtet. Diese Ausdrücke
zeigen die Bedeutung der Reduzierung der Hop-Anzahl in Mehr-Hop-Systemen,
um eine höhere Leistung zu erzielen. Zudem werden die Auswirkungen
verschiedener Antennen-Konfigurationen und Sendeleistungen auf die Anzahl
der Hops analysiert. Weiterhin wird der Einfluss von
Synchronisationsfehlern auf das kooperative MIMO-Verfahren herausgestellt
und daraus eine untere Grenze für das
Signal-zu-Interferenz-und-Rausch-Verhältnis, sowie ein Ausdruck für die
Bitfehlerrate bei hohem Signal-Rausch-Verhältnis entwickelt.
Diese Zusammenhänge sollen Netzwerk-Designern helfen die Qualität des
Services auch in den Worst-Case-Szenarien sicherzustellen.
Im zweiten Teil der Arbeit werden einige innovative
Algorithmen vorgestellt, die die Einrichtung und die Funktionsweise von
Cluster-basierten Ad-hoc-Netzwerken, die kooperative Relays verwenden,
erleichtern und verbessern. Darunter befinden sich ein
Clustering-Algorithmus, der den Batteriestatus der Knoten berücksichtigt,
um eine längere Lebensdauer des Netzwerks zu gewährleisten und ein
Routing-Mechanismus, der auf den Einsatz in kooperativen MIMO
Mehr-Hop-Systemen zugeschnitten ist. Die Vorteile beider Algorithmen werden
durch Simulationen veranschaulicht.
Eine Methode, die Daten in Ad-hoc-Netzwerken mit verteilten Hash-Tabellen
behandelt wird ebenfalls vorgestellt. Darüber hinaus wird auch
ein Sicherheitsmechanismus für die physikalische Schicht in
Multi-Hop-Systemen und kooperativen MIMO-Systemen präsentiert. Eine Analyse
zeigt, dass das kooperative MIMO-Verfahren deutliche Vorteile gegenüber dem
konventionellen MIMO-Verfahren hinsichtlich der informationstheoretischen
Grenzen der Sicherheit auf der physikalischen Schicht aufweist
Human pose and skeleton reconstruction with deep neural networks from mmWave radar point clouds
The foreseen adoption of millimeter-wave (mmWave) communication systems in our everyday life has increased the research interest on using this technology for sensing applications. Previous work has shown that the reflections of the signals transmitted by a mmWave device can be used to localize objects or people in the environment and analyze their movement. Higher carrier frequencies, with their large bandwidth availability are key to obtain better spatial resolution, effectively allowing the usage of dedicated mmWave radar devices for the fine-grained analysis of human gaits. This is of particular interest in bio-mechanical motion tracking systems used in clinical and rehabilitation contexts, which are typically based on expensive and impractical marker-based devices. In this work we design and implement a deep-learning framework for mmWave radar-based motion tracking of human gait, which can reconstruct the position of a set of key points on the human body from the raw radar signal during motion. The proposed system extracts point clouds representing the moving subject, making use of signal processing and tracking techniques to remove noise from static objects and interference. Then, we adapt a state-of-the-art Neural Network (NN) for point clouds, Pointnet++, to our sparse and noisy radar data and propose a modification of the architecture to exploit the temporal correlation of radar point clouds. The results obtained on our own dataset show promising results despite the technical limitations of the motion tracking system used as a ground truth to train the proposed NN. Our system can reconstruct the position of 30 markers placed on the subject’s body with an average accuracy of 17 cm, paving the road for future work on mmWave markerless motion tracking based on a larger and more diverse set of measurements
A Survey on Fundamental Limits of Integrated Sensing and Communication
The integrated sensing and communication (ISAC), in which the sensing and communication share the same frequency band and hardware, has emerged as a key technology in future wireless systems due to two main reasons. First, many important application scenarios in fifth generation (5G) and beyond, such as autonomous vehicles, Wi-Fi sensing and extended reality, requires both high-performance sensing and wireless communications. Second, with millimeter wave and massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) technologies widely employed in 5G and beyond, the future communication signals tend to have high-resolution in both time and angular domain, opening up the possibility for ISAC. As such, ISAC has attracted tremendous research interest and attentions in both academia and industry. Early works on ISAC have been focused on the design, analysis and optimization of practical ISAC technologies for various ISAC systems. While this line of works are necessary, it is equally important to study the fundamental limits of ISAC in order to understand the gap between the current state-of-the-art technologies and the performance limits, and provide useful insights and guidance for the development of better ISAC technologies that can approach the performance limits. In this paper, we aim to provide a comprehensive survey for the current research progress on the fundamental limits of ISAC. Particularly, we first propose a systematic classification method for both traditional radio sensing (such as radar sensing and wireless localization) and ISAC so that they can be naturally incorporated into a unified framework. Then we summarize the major performance metrics and bounds used in sensing, communications and ISAC, respectively. After that, we present the current research progresses on fundamental limits of each class of the traditional sensing and ISAC systems. Finally, the open problems and future research directions are discussed

System design of the MeerKAT L - band 3D radar for monitoring near earth objects
This thesis investigates the current knowledge of small space debris (diameter less than 10 cm) and potentially hazardous asteroids (PHA) by the use of radar systems. It clearly identifies the challenges involved in detecting and tracking of small space debris and PHAs. The most significant challenges include: difficulty in tracking small space debris due to orbital instability and reduced radar cross-section (RCS), errors in some existing data sets, the lack of dedicated or contributing instruments in the Southern Hemisphere, and the large cost involved in building a high-performance radar for this purpose. This thesis investigates the cooperative use of the KAT-7 (7 antennas) and MeerKAT (64 antennas) radio telescope receivers in a radar system to improve monitoring of small debris and PHAs was investigated using theory and simulations, as a cost-effective solution. Parameters for a low cost and high-performance radar were chosen, based on the receiver digital back-end. Data from such radars will be used to add to existing catalogues thereby creating a constantly updated database of near Earth objects and bridging the data gap that is currently being filled by mathematical models. Based on literature and system requirements, quasi-monostatic, bistatic, multistatic, single input multiple output (SIMO) radar configurations were proposed for radio telescope arrays in detecting, tracking and imaging small space debris in the low Earth orbit (LEO) and PHAs. The maximum dwell time possible for the radar geometry was found to be 30 seconds, with coherent integration limitations of 2 ms and 121 ms for accelerating and non-accelerating targets, respectively. The multistatic and SIMO radar configurations showed sufficient detection (SNR 13 dB) for small debris and quasi-monostatic configuration for PHAs. Radar detection, tracking and imaging (ISAR) simulations were compared to theory and ambiguities in range and Doppler were compensated for. The main contribution made by this work is a system design for a high performance, cost effective 3D radar that uses the KAT-7 and MeerKAT radio telescope receivers in a commensal manner. Comparing theory and simulations, the SNR improvement, dwell time increase, tracking and imaging capabilities, for small debris and PHAs compared to existing assets, was illustrated. Since the MeerKAT radio telescope is a precursor for the SKA Africa, extrapolating the capabilities of the MeerKAT radar to the SKA radar implies that it would be the most sensitive and high performing contributor to space situational awareness, upon its completion. From this feasibility study, the MeerKAT 3D distributed radar will be able to detect debris of diameter less than 10 cm at altitudes between 700 km to 900 km, and PHAs, with a range resolution of 15 m, a minimum SNR of 14 dB for 152 pulses for a coherent integration time of 2.02 ms. The target range (derived from the two way delay), velocity (from Doppler frequency) and direction will be measured within an accuracy of: 2.116 m, 15.519 m/s, 0.083° (single antenna), respectively. The range, velocity accuracies and SNR affect orbit prediction accuracy by 0.021 minutes for orbit period and 0.0057° for orbit inclination. The multistatic radar was found to be the most suitable and computationally efficient configuration compared to the bistatic and SIMO configurations, and beamforming should be implemented as required by specific target geometry
