    A discourse analysis of the Tai Dam chronicle

    This paper is a discourse study of the Tai Dam chronicle Kwam To Muang. It focuses on rhetorical structure and information structure. The former includes rhyming structure, parallel structure, cyclical structure, and listing structure, which function to facilitate memorization and also provide a linkage to the text. The information structure is analyzed in terms of the bipartite discourse structure, i.e. storyline elements and Nonstoryline elements. The storyline material is signalled by the preverbal auxiliary caŋ² ‘consequently, then’ and verb types, namely, event proper, motion, and action verbs. Nonstoryline elements include supportive materials which are off the storyline. They include setting, background, collateral, and cohesion. The setting is characterized by descriptive and stative verbs. Background information is marked by non-punctiliar verbs. Collateral information is expressed by a negation having the negative marker baw³ ‘not’. And cohesion is realized by rhetorical structure and repetitive clauses

    INVOLVMENT OF THE CEREBELLUM IN VERABL WORKING MEMORY AND PHONOLOGICAL JUDGMENT: EVIDENCE FOR A ROLE IN PREDICTIVE PHONOLOGICAL CODING

    Within recent decades, researchers have found evidence that the cerebellum contributes to language processing, yet exactly how it contributes remains a mystery. Researchers have attempted to map functional zones within the cerebellar cortex in an effort to determine precisely how the cerebellum contributes to language with limited success. We predict that the cerebellum’s functional zones are not strictly divisible by cognitive domains such as “language” or “executive control” and are instead delineated by task demands not unlike cognitive regions in the cerebral cortex. Prior neuropsychological results indicate that rhyme judgment and verbal working memory tasks impose task demands that require the cerebellum for normal levels of performance. In an effort to localize this shared functional process in the cerebellum, we used a slow event-related design to study the hemodynamic response in participants (N=12) as they performed rhyme judgment task and then compared to the results to separate pool of the subjects who performed a verbal working memory task (N=12). We hypothesized that these two tasks share cognitive processes and thereby neural substrates; in other words, they will engage the same functional regions in the cerebellum. Secondly, we hypothesized that these functional regions would be most engaged during task components negatively impacted by concurrent articulation, i.e., the encoding period of verbal working memory tasks and judgments involving mismatched non-rhyme pairs, e.g. “tint” and “pint.” We found three potential clusters engaged in both tasks, with one region (located in Crus I) demonstrating the predicted response patterns across different task components. Based upon these findings and the cognitive literature on verbal working memory and rhyme judgments, we suggest that this region contributes to an internal speech-based process that involves phonological error prediction

    Remembering 'zeal' but not 'thing':reverse frequency effects as a consequence of deregulated semantic processing

    More efficient processing of high frequency (HF) words is a ubiquitous finding in healthy individuals, yet frequency effects are often small or absent in stroke aphasia. We propose that some patients fail to show the expected frequency effect because processing of HF words places strong demands on semantic control and regulation processes, counteracting the usual effect. This may occur because HF words appear in a wide range of linguistic contexts, each associated with distinct semantic information. This theory predicts that in extreme circumstances, patients with impaired semantic control should show an outright reversal of the normal frequency effect. To test this prediction, we tested two patients with impaired semantic control with a delayed repetition task that emphasised activation of semantic representations. By alternating HF and low frequency (LF) trials, we demonstrated a significant repetition advantage for LF words, principally because of perseverative errors in which patients produced the previous LF response in place of the HF target. These errors indicated that HF words were more weakly activated than LF words. We suggest that when presented with no contextual information, patients generate a weak and unstable pattern of semantic activation for HF words because information relating to many possible contexts and interpretations is activated. In contrast, LF words tend are associated with more stable patterns of activation because similar semantic information is activated whenever they are encountered

    Spectators’ aesthetic experiences of sound and movement in dance performance

    In this paper we present a study of spectators’ aesthetic experiences of sound and movement in live dance performance. A multidisciplinary team comprising a choreographer, neuroscientists and qualitative researchers investigated the effects of different sound scores on dance spectators. What would be the impact of auditory stimulation on kinesthetic experience and/or aesthetic appreciation of the dance? What would be the effect of removing music altogether, so that spectators watched dance while hearing only the performers’ breathing and footfalls? We investigated audience experience through qualitative research, using post-performance focus groups, while a separately conducted functional brain imaging (fMRI) study measured the synchrony in brain activity across spectators when they watched dance with sound or breathing only. When audiences watched dance accompanied by music the fMRI data revealed evidence of greater intersubject synchronisation in a brain region consistent with complex auditory processing. The audience research found that some spectators derived pleasure from finding convergences between two complex stimuli (dance and music). The removal of music and the resulting audibility of the performers’ breathing had a significant impact on spectators’ aesthetic experience. The fMRI analysis showed increased synchronisation among observers, suggesting greater influence of the body when interpreting the dance stimuli. The audience research found evidence of similar corporeally focused experience. The paper discusses possible connections between the findings of our different approaches, and considers the implications of this study for interdisciplinary research collaborations between arts and sciences

    Phonological Priming In Young Children Who Stutter: Holistic Versus Incremental Processing

    Purpose: To investigate the holistic versus incremental phonological encoding processes of young children who stutter (CWS; N = 26) and age- and gender-matched children who do not stutter (CWNS; N = 26) via a picture-naming auditory priming paradigm. Method: Children named pictures during 3 auditory priming conditions: neutral, holistic, and incremental. Speech reaction time (SRT) was measured from the onset of picture presentation to the onset of participant response. Results: CWNS shifted from being significantly faster in the holistic priming condition to being significantly faster in the incremental priming condition from 3 to 5 years of age. In contrast, the majority of 3- and 5-year-old CWS continued to exhibit faster SRT in the holistic than the incremental condition. Conclusion: CWS are delayed in making the developmental shift in phonological encoding from holistic to incremental processing, a delay that may contribute to their difficulties establishing fluent speech.Communication Sciences and Disorder

    Verbal working memory and language production: Common approaches to the serial ordering of verbal information

    Verbal working memory (WM) tasks typically involve the language production architecture for recall; however, language production processes have had a minimal role in theorizing about WM. A framework for understanding verbal WM results is presented here. In this framework, domain-specific mechanisms for serial ordering in verbal WM are provided by the language production architecture, in which positional, lexical, and phonological similarity constraints are highly similar to those identified in the WM literature. These behavioral similarities are paralleled in computational modeling of serial ordering in both fields. The role of long-term learning in serial ordering performance is emphasized, in contrast to some models of verbal WM. Classic WM findings are discussed in terms of the language production architecture. The integration of principles from both fields illuminates the maintenance and ordering mechanisms for verbal information

    Dissociable components of phonological and lexical-semantic short-term memory and their relation to impaired word production in aphasia

    peer reviewedThis study assesses the dissociability of phonological and lexical-semantic short-term memory (STM) in two aphasic patients, B.N. and T.M., and explores the relationship between their STM deficits and their word production impairment. Picture naming performance suggests phonological language production impairment in B.N. and lexical-semantic language production impairment in T.M. On STM tasks, B.N. presented phonological STM impairment with preserved lexical-semantic STM, while T.M. presented the reverse profile. These results reveal a double dissociation between phonological and lexical-semantic STM capacities and suggest that our patients' STM impairment may be selectively related to their language production deficit

    Hippocampal sclerosis affects fMR-adaptation of lyrics and melodies in songs

    Songs constitute a natural combination of lyrics and melodies, but it is unclear whether and how these two song components are integrated during the emergence of a memory trace. Network theories of memory suggest a prominent role of the hippocampus, together with unimodal sensory areas, in the build-up of conjunctive representations. The present study tested the modulatory influence of the hippocampus on neural adaptation to songs in lateral temporal areas. Patients with unilateral hippocampal sclerosis and healthy matched controls were presented with blocks of short songs in which lyrics and/or melodies were varied or repeated in a crossed factorial design. Neural adaptation effects were taken as correlates of incidental emergent memory traces. We hypothesized that hippocampal lesions, particularly in the left hemisphere, would weaken adaptation effects, especially the integration of lyrics and melodies. Results revealed that lateral temporal lobe regions showed weaker adaptation to repeated lyrics as well as a reduced interaction of the adaptation effects for lyrics and melodies in patients with left hippocampal sclerosis. This suggests a deficient build-up of a sensory memory trace for lyrics and a reduced integration of lyrics with melodies, compared to healthy controls. Patients with right hippocampal sclerosis showed a similar profile of results although the effects did not reach significance in this population. We highlight the finding that the integrated representation of lyrics and melodies typically shown in healthy participants is likely tied to the integrity of the left medial temporal lobe. This novel finding provides the first neuroimaging evidence for the role of the hippocampus during repetitive exposure to lyrics and melodies and their integration into a song

    Explaining semantic short-term memory deficits:evidence for the critical role of semantic control

    Patients with apparently selective short-term memory (STM) deficits for semantic information have played an important role in developing multi-store theories of STM and challenge the idea that verbal STM is supported by maintaining activation in the language system. We propose that semantic STM deficits are not as selective as previously thought and can occur as a result of mild disruption to semantic control processes, i.e., mechanisms that bias semantic processing towards task-relevant aspects of knowledge and away from irrelevant information. We tested three semantic STM patients with tasks that tapped four aspects of semantic control: (i) resolving ambiguity between word meanings, (ii) sensitivity to cues, (iii) ignoring irrelevant information and (iv) detecting weak semantic associations. All were impaired in conditions requiring more semantic control, irrespective of the STM demands of the task, suggesting a mild, but task-general, deficit in regulating semantic knowledge. This mild deficit has a disproportionate effect on STM tasks because they have high intrinsic control demands: in STM tasks, control is required to keep information active when it is no longer available in the environment and to manage competition between items held in memory simultaneously. By re-interpreting the core deficit in semantic STM patients in this way, we are able to explain their apparently selective impairment without the need for a specialised STM store. Instead, we argue that semantic STM patients occupy the mildest end of spectrum of semantic control disorders
