    The mixed capacitated arc routing problem with non-overlapping routes

    Real world applications for vehicle collection or delivery along streets usually lead to arc routing problems, with additional and complicating constraints. In this paper we focus on arc routing with an additional constraint to identify vehicle service routes with a limited number of shared nodes, i.e. vehicle service routes with a limited number of intersections. This constraint leads to solutions that are better shaped for real application purposes. We propose a new problem, the bounded overlapping MCARP (BCARP), which is defined as the mixed capacitated arc routing problem (MCARP) with an additional constraint imposing an upper bound on the number of nodes that are common to different routes. The best feasible upper bound is obtained from a modified MCARP in which the minimization criteria is given by the overlapping of the routes. We show how to compute this bound by solving a simpler problem. To obtain feasible solutions for the bigger instances of the KARP heuristics are also proposed. Computational results taken from two well known instance sets show that, with only a small increase in total time traveled, the model BCARP produces solutions that are more attractive to implement in practice than those produced by the MCARP modelinfo:eu-repo/semantics/submittedVersio

    Routing Applications in Newspaper Delivery

    -The goal of this report is to give an up-to-date account of routing applications in the newspaper business. We describe the newspaper supply chain, and focus on the “last mile” distribution that has been advocated as an application of arc routing in the literature. A literature survey is provided, followed by a discussion of the arc routing model and its adequacy to newspaper applications. A more general and normally more adequate model: The Node, Edge, and Arc Routing Problem, is discussed. Characteristics of routing problems in carrier delivery are presented, together with a case study from the development of a web-based route design and revision system. Finally, summary, conclusions, and prospects for the future are given

    An updated annotated bibliography on arc routing problems

    The number of arc routing publications has increased significantly in the last decade. Such an increase justifies a second annotated bibliography, a sequel to Corberán and Prins (Networks 56 (2010), 50–69), discussing arc routing studies from 2010 onwards. These studies are grouped into three main sections: single vehicle problems, multiple vehicle problems and applications. Each main section catalogs problems according to their specifics. Section 2 is therefore composed of four subsections, namely: the Chinese Postman Problem, the Rural Postman Problem, the General Routing Problem (GRP) and Arc Routing Problems (ARPs) with profits. Section 3, devoted to the multiple vehicle case, begins with three subsections on the Capacitated Arc Routing Problem (CARP) and then delves into several variants of multiple ARPs, ending with GRPs and problems with profits. Section 4 is devoted to applications, including distribution and collection routes, outdoor activities, post-disaster operations, road cleaning and marking.     Arc routing with trip-balancing and attractiveness measures : A waste collection case study

    This work focuses on a household (or door to door) waste collection problem in the Portuguese municipality of Seixal, which is modelled as a generalisation of a mixed capacitated arc routing problem (MCARP). The MCARP is known to be NP-hard. The proposed methodology uses: i) a GIS (geographic information system), for input/output and to reduce problem dimensions; ii) a matheuristic that iteratively solves a new hybrid model; and iii) two versions of a two-phase matheuristic. The latter pursues the generation of connected and compacted trips. During the first phase, called initial assignment, some links requiring service are assigned to vehicle services. In the second phase, the hybrid model finishes the assignment and generates a feasible set of trips. The quality of the generated solutions is assessed through the total time, as well as by some attractiveness measures. These measures evaluate the adequacy of the solutions for the real case-study, a crucial aspect for trips that need to be accepted by practitioners. With this purpose, a new attractiveness measure that introduces space dependent penalisation of overlaps, named weighted hull overlap, is also proposed.     Approximation Algorithms for Mixed, Windy, and Capacitated Arc Routing Problems

    We show that any alpha(n)-approximation algorithm for the n-vertex metric asymmetric Traveling Salesperson problem yields O(alpha(C))-approximation algorithms for various mixed, windy, and capacitated arc routing problems. Herein, C is the number of weakly-connected components in the subgraph induced by the positive-demand arcs, a number that can be expected to be small in applications. In conjunction with known results, we derive constant-factor approximations if C is in O(log n) and O(log(C)/log(log(C)))-approximations in general

    Arc routing problems: A review of the past, present, and future

    [EN] Arc routing problems (ARPs) are defined and introduced. Following a brief history of developments in this area of research, different types of ARPs are described that are currently relevant for study. In addition, particular features of ARPs that are important from a theoretical or practical point of view are discussed. A section on applications describes some of the changes that have occurred from early applications of ARP models to the present day and points the way to emerging topics for study. A final section provides information on libraries and instance repositories for ARPs.     Water truck routing optimization in open pit mines using the general algebraic modelling system approach

    This paper presents a methodological approach for routing optimization in open pit mines which is a trending topic for dust emission reduction in mining process. In this context, the aim of the research and its contribution to the knowledge is firstly described based on a comprehensive literature survey in the field. Then, as an arc routing problem, the mathematical model for the process is generated including the objective function, minimizing the total distance traveled by the water truck fleets, practical constraints that should be met and the used assumptions. Finally, the formulated optimization problem solved employing General Algebraic Modelling System (GAMS) approach respect to the nature of the mathematical equations. The tested results by simulations discussed to confirm the effectiveness of the proposed method in dealing with the in-hand problem. This methodological approach could be used in optimization of other similar engineering problem as well

    Visual attractiveness in routing problems: A review

    Enhancing visual attractiveness in a routing plan has proven to be an effective way to facilitate practical implementation and positive collaboration among planning and operational levels in transportation. Several authors, driven by the requests of practitioners, have considered, either explicitly or implicitly, such aspect in the optimization process for different routing applications. However, due to its subjective nature, there is not a unique way of evaluating the visual attractiveness of a routing solution. The aim of this paper is to provide an overview of the literature on visual attractiveness.
