Средства перевода тропов в романе Дж.Р.Р. Толкина «The Hobbit, or There and Back Again» на украинский язык

Стаття присвячена дослідженню перекладацьких трансформацій, які використовувалися перекладачем О.М. Мокровольским для відтворення стилістичних засобів образності та виразності при першому перекладі роману Дж.Р.Р. Толкіна «The Hobbit, or There and Back Again» українською мовою. Цей роман, надрукований у 1937 році і набувший популярності починаючи з 60-х років ХХ ст., став на ряду з «Володарем Перснів» та творами Р.І. Говарда і К.С. Льюїса одним з найбільш визначальних для розвитку жанру фентезі у подальші десятиліття. Мова автора багата на різноманітні стилістичні прийоми та експресивні засоби, проте у статті увага зосереджується на засобах відтворення у перекладі трьох найбільш розповсюджених тропів, а саме епітету, метафори та порівняння.The article investigates the translation transformations used by the translator Olexandr Mokrovolskyi to render the imagery and stylistic means of expression in the first translation into Ukrainian of the novel “The Hobbit, or There and Back Again” by the British author John Ronald Reuel Tolkien. The choice of the literature work for the study is determined by high popularity of fantasy fiction among the readers of all ages worldwide at the present time. This novel, published in 1937 and gained popularity since the 60-ies of the twentieth century, is one of the most significant for the development of fantasy fiction in the following decades as well as the epic trilogy “The Lord of the Rings” by the same author, the stories about Conan the Barbarian by the American writer Robert Ervin Howard and the series of novels “The Chronicles of Narnia” by the British writer Clive Staples Lewis. The novel “The Hobbit, or There and Back Again” is full of various author's stylistic devices and expressive means, but the article focuses on the means of translation of three most commonly used tropes, such as epithet, metaphor and simile. Some kinds of grammatical, lexical-grammatical, lexical-semantic, lexical-stylistic transformations used by the translator are described in the article.Статья посвящена исследованию переводческих трансформаций, которые использовались переводчиком А.Н. Мокровольским для воспроизведения стилистических средств образности и выразительности при первом переводе романа Дж.Р.Р. Толкина «The Hobbit, or There and Back Again» на украинский язык. Этот роман, напечатанный в 1937 году и получив популярность начиная с 60-х годов ХХ в., стал на ряду с «Властелином Колец» и произведениями Р.И. Говарда и К.С. Льюиса одним из наиболее определяющих для развития жанра фэнтези в последующие десятилетия. Язык автора богат разнообразными стилистические приемы и экспрессивные средства, однако в статье внимание сосредоточено на средствах воспроизведения трех наиболее распространенных тропов в переводе, а именно эпитета, метафоры и сравнения

Análisis crítico-descriptivo de la traducción al Español del Libro The Hobbit or there and back again de J.T.R Tolkien hecha por Manuel Figueroa

En el presente trabajo de grado, se realizó un análisis crítico-descriptivo de la traducción de libro The Hobbit or There and Back Again de J.R.R Tolkien al español por Manuel Figueroa, donde analizamos y describimos los procedimientos traductológicos efectuados para traducir los nombres propios, canciones, modismos, interjecciones y sustantivos presentes en el texto, con la finalidad de determinar y describir la incidencia de las traducciones en el texto de llegada. Para el marco teórico de este trabajo se recurrió principalmente a las teorías presentadas por Peter Newmark y Mary Snell-Hornby. De estas, tomamos la información con respecto a la traducción y a su relación con el aspecto cultural de la lengua. En el marco conceptual definimos traducción de acuerdo a la teoría presentada previamente y expusimos algunos términos relevantes para nuestra investigación, al igual que los métodos y procedimientos que rigen nuestro análisis. Para la ejecución del análisis descriptivo de este trabajo, tomamos como corpus el libro The Hobbit or There and Back Again, escrito por J.R.R. Tolkien, y la versión traducida al español por Manuel Figueroa. Primero se hizo la recolección de datos y luego se clasificó en una tabla en la que se comparan fragmentos de ambas versiones. A partir de esta información, se presentó una breve explicación del método y procedimientos que escogió el traductor de la obra. Finalmente, tabulamos y analizamos la información encontrada en el libro según los métodos y procedimientos expuestos por Peter Newmark. Luego hicimos un análisis por cada categoría y recopilamos todo en las conclusiones, donde hablamos de manera general acerca del texto, de su traducción y del impacto de este en los lectores.The present investigation is a critical-descriptive analysis of the translation of the book The Hobbit or There and Back Again of J.R.R Tolkien to Spanish by Manuel Figueroa; in which the translation process was analysed and described to translate the proper names, songs, idioms, interjections and nouns present in the text, with the purpose of determining and describing the incidence of the translation in the target text. In the theoretical framework of this investigation we mainly used the theories presented by Peter Newmark and Mary Snell-Hornby. We took the information regarding translation and its relation with the cultural aspect of the language. In the conceptual framework, we defined translation according to the theories previously presented and we then discussed some terms relevant to our research, as well as the methods and procedures that guide our analysis. In order to develop the descriptive analysis of this research, we used the book The Hobbit or There and Back Again, written by J.R.R Tolkien and the translated version in Spanish by Manuel Figueroa as our corpus. First, the data was collected, and placed on a chart in which fragments of both versions were compared. From this information, a brief explanation of the method and procedures chosen by the translator of the work was presented. Finally, we collected and analysed the information found in the book according to the methods and procedures presented by Peter Newmark. Tolkien’s Japonisme: Prints, Dragons, and a Great Wave

The original September 1937 George Allen & Unwin edition of The Hobbit features artwork by J.R.R. Tolkien along with an accompanying dust jacket. This latter work is a modern, stylized graphic design composed of a not entirely symmetrical view of a Middle-earth landscape (night to the left, day to the right), with the Lonely Mountain rising in the distant center, flanked by steeply sloped, snow-covered Misty Mountains and in the foreground Mirkwood’s dense, impenetrable forests. Additional features include a crescent moon, the sun, a dragon, eagles, a lake village, and a rapier-like path—a straight road— heading toward a darkened, megalithic trapezoidal door at the base of the mountain.1 The runes which form the border read: “The Hobbit or There and Back Again, being the record of a year’s journey made by Bilbo Baggins; compiled from his memoirs by J.R.R. Tolkien and published by George Allen & Unwin.

The translation of Tolkien's poetry : "Far over the Misty Mountain cold" and "Nüüd mingem siit, veel koidu eel"

The aim of this thesis is to analyse the translation of John Ronald Reuel Tolkien’s poem ‘Far Over the Misty Mountains Cold’ from his book The Hobbit, or There and Back Again, which was published in 1937. The thesis will analyse the English version of the poem and compare it to its Estonian translation “Nüüd mingem siit, veel koidu eel” by Harald Rajamets, which was published in 1977 in Lia Rajandi’s translation of The Hobbit called “Kääbik, ehk, Sinna ja tagasi”. The first part of the thesis will give an overview of the role of poetry in Tolkien’s writing, discuss the key aspects of translating poetry and introduce Harald Rajamets as a translator. The empirical part consists of the analyses of ‘Far Over the Misty Mountains Cold’ and its Estonian translation “Nüüd mingem siit, veel koidu eel” concentrating on the comparison of the differences between the source text and the translation regarding the narrative structure, metre, rhyme, and repetitions. Applying Descriptivist Norms to Fantasy Translation

This paper focuses on the presence in Romania ofJ.R.R. Tolkien’s The Hobbit or There and Back Again as an illustrative example of fantasy, or, more precisely, high fantasy in the Romanian literary system. The translation of fantasy as a component of children’s literature requires compliance with a set of norms and conventions that reflect both the requirements of a particular target language and those connected with the specifics of this category of readers. Having G. Toury’s classification of norms as a starting point, the investigation will attempt to detect the norms that informed translators’ decisions, the extent to which these norms are an emanation of the time of translation production and whether the translators are consistent with the extratextual norms and their own textual strategies. From among Toury’s norms, particular attention will be given to the initial ones, with the goal of identifying the preferred orientation of the target texts either towards acceptability or towards adequacy. The investigation will rely mainly on structures and textual units extracted from the target productions, since the main objective is to unveil repeated patterns of translation behavior likely to suggest mechanisms of norm generatio

Экспрессивные сдвиги при переводе произведений жанра фэнтези на разных языковых уровнях

Дана стаття присвячена дослідженню експресивних зсувів, які виникають при перекладі творів жанру фентезі з англійської мови українською на різних мовних рівнях. Дослідження проводилося на матеріалі світових бестселерів ХІХ, ХХ та ХХІ сторіч у жанрі фентезі. У статті розглядаються функціональні та стилістичні особливості цього жанру, надаються визначення та причини виникнення експресивних зсувів при перекладі, аналізується зв'язок між зсувами на різних мовних рівнях та перекладацькими трансформаціями, у результаті застосування яких вони виникають. Також наводяться статистичні дані, які демонструють частоту виникнення експресивних зсувів в залежності від їх характеру та мовного рівня, на якому вони виникають, а також частоту використання трансформацій, які стають їх причинами.In this article the expressive shifts that occur in the translation of fantasy literature from English into Ukrainian language are considered at the different levels of language (phonetic, morphological, lexical and syntactical ones). The study was conducted on the material of the world bestselling books in the fantasy and mystics genres of the nineteenth, twentieth and twenty-first centuries. The choice of literature works for the study is determined by high popularity of these genres among the readers worldwide at the present time. In this article the functional and stylistic features of fantasy literature are considered and the definition and the causes of occurrence of the expressive shifts phenomenon in translation are analyzed. And also the author demonstrates in the article the connection between the shifts at different levels of language and the translational transformations, application of which results in the appearance of expressive shifts. Moreover the statistics is presented that shows the frequency of occurrence of the expressive shifts depending on their nature (emphatization or neutralization) and the linguistic level on which they occur, and the frequency of the transformations applied, that cause their occurrence at each level of language.Данная статья посвящена исследованию экспрессивных сдвигов, которые возникают при переводе произведений жанра фэнтези с английского языка на украинский на разных языковых уровнях. Исследование проводилось на материале мировых бестселлеров XIX, XX и XXI веков в жанре фэнтези. В статье рассматриваются функциональные и стилистические особенности этого жанра, даются определение и причины возникновения экспрессивных сдвигов при переводе, проводится анализ связи между сдвигами на разных языковых уровнях и переводческими трансформациями, в результате применения которых они возникают. Приводятся статистические данные, которые демонстрируют частоту возникновения экспрессивных сдвигов в зависимости от их характера и языкового уровня, на котором они возникают, а также частоту использования трансформаций, которые становятся их причинами
