Workload Equity in Vehicle Routing Problems: A Survey and Analysis
Over the past two decades, equity aspects have been considered in a growing
number of models and methods for vehicle routing problems (VRPs). Equity
concerns most often relate to fairly allocating workloads and to balancing the
utilization of resources, and many practical applications have been reported in
the literature. However, there has been only limited discussion about how
workload equity should be modeled in VRPs, and various measures for optimizing
such objectives have been proposed and implemented without a critical
evaluation of their respective merits and consequences.
This article addresses this gap with an analysis of classical and alternative
equity functions for biobjective VRP models. In our survey, we review and
categorize the existing literature on equitable VRPs. In the analysis, we
identify a set of axiomatic properties that an ideal equity measure should
satisfy, collect six common measures, and point out important connections
between their properties and those of the resulting Pareto-optimal solutions.
To gauge the extent of these implications, we also conduct a numerical study on
small biobjective VRP instances solvable to optimality. Our study reveals two
undesirable consequences when optimizing equity with nonmonotonic functions:
Pareto-optimal solutions can consist of non-TSP-optimal tours, and even if all
tours are TSP optimal, Pareto-optimal solutions can be workload inconsistent,
i.e. composed of tours whose workloads are all equal to or longer than those of
other Pareto-optimal solutions. We show that the extent of these phenomena
should not be underestimated. The results of our biobjective analysis are valid
also for weighted sum, constraint-based, or single-objective models. Based on
this analysis, we conclude that monotonic equity functions are more appropriate
for certain types of VRP models, and suggest promising avenues for further

A robust solving strategy for the vehicle routing problem with multiple depots and multiple objectives
This document presents the development of a robust solving strategy for the Vehicle Routing Problem with Multiple Depots and Multiple Objectives (MO-MDVRP). The problem tackeled in this work is the problem to minimize the total cost and the load imbalance in vehicle routing plan for distribution of goods. This thesis presents a MILP mathematical model and a solution strategy based on a Hybrid Multi- Objective Scatter Search Algorithm. Several experiments using simulated instances were run proving that the proposed method is quite robust, this is shown in execution times (less than 4 minutes for an instance with 8 depots and 300 customers); also, the proposed method showed good results compared to the results found with the MILP model for small instances (up to 20 clients and 2 depots).MaestríaMagister en Ingeniería Industria
Routing Applications in Newspaper Delivery
-The goal of this report is to give an up-to-date account of routing applications in the newspaper business. We describe the newspaper supply chain, and focus on the “last mile” distribution that has been advocated as an application of arc routing in the literature. A literature survey is provided, followed by a discussion of the arc routing model and its adequacy to newspaper applications. A more general and normally more adequate model: The Node, Edge, and Arc Routing Problem, is discussed. Characteristics of routing problems in carrier delivery are presented, together with a case study from the development of a web-based route design and revision system. Finally, summary, conclusions, and prospects for the future are given
Performance Comparison of Two-phase LP-based Heuristic Methods for Capacitated Vehicle Routing Problem with Three Objectives
This paper develops a two-phase LP-based heuristic for the Capacitated Vehicle Routing Problem (CVRP). It considers three objectives: (1) minimizing the total costs of fuel consumption and overtime, (2) maximizing the total personal relationships between customers and drivers, and (3) balancing the delivery weights of vehicles. The two-phase LP-based heuristic (cluster-first route-second) is proposed. First, in the clustering stage, three LP-based clustering models (denoted by C1, C2, and C3) are developed. Customers are grouped into clusters based on real distances between the customers for C1, personal relationships between the customers and drivers for C2, and the delivery weights of vehicles for C3. Second, in the routing stage, an LP-based traveling salesman problem model is used to form a route for each cluster, to minimize the total costs of fuel consumption and overtime labor. The experimental results from a case study of Thai SMEs show that when the C2 clustering model is applied, the performances are the best. Significant contributions of this paper include: (1) it is an original paper that proposes the C2 clustering model, and it has the best performances based on the experimental results, and (2) the proposed two-phase LP-based heuristic methods are suitable for practical use by SMEs since the required computational time is short, and it has multiple models with different objectives that can be selected to match a user's requirements
Solving the waste collection problem from a multiobjective perspective: New methodologies and case studies

El tratamiento de residuos es un tema de estudio por parte de las administraciones locales a nivel
mundial. Distintos factores han de tenerse en cuenta para realizar un servicio eficiente. En este trabajo se
desarrolla una herramienta para analizar y resolver el problema de la recogida de residuos sólidos en Málaga.
Tras un análisis exhaustivo de los datos, se aborda el problema real como un problema de rutas multiobjetivo con capacidad limitada. Para los problemas multiobjetivo, no suele existir una única solución óptima, sino un conjunto de soluciones eficientes de Pareto. Las características del problema hacen inviable su resolución de forma exacta, por lo que se aplican distintas estrategias metaheurísticas para obtener una buena aproximación. En particular, se combinan las técnicas de GRASP, Path Relinking y Variable Neighborhood Search, que son adaptadas a la perspectiva multicriterio. Se trata de una aproximación en dos fases: una primera aproximación de la frontera eficiente se genera mediante un GRASP multiobjetivo. Tres son los métodos propuestos para la primera aproximación, dos de ellos derivados de la publicación de Martí et al. (2015) y el último se apoya en la función escalarizada de logro de Wierzbicki (Wierzbicki, 1980) para distintas combinaciones de pesos. A continuación, esta aproximación es mejorada con una versión de Path Relinking o Variable Neighborhood Search, con un punto de referencia diseñado para problemas multiobjetivo. Una vez generada la aproximación de la frontera eficiente, el proceso de obtención de la solución que más se adecúa a las preferencias de los gestores se basa en el desarrollo de un método interactivo sin trade – off, derivado de la filosofía NAUTILUS (Miettinen et al. 2010). Arc routing problems: A review of the past, present, and future
[EN] Arc routing problems (ARPs) are defined and introduced. Following a brief history of developments in this area of research, different types of ARPs are described that are currently relevant for study. In addition, particular features of ARPs that are important from a theoretical or practical point of view are discussed. A section on applications describes some of the changes that have occurred from early applications of ARP models to the present day and points the way to emerging topics for study. A final section provides information on libraries and instance repositories for ARPs. An updated annotated bibliography on arc routing problems
The number of arc routing publications has increased significantly in the last decade. Such an increase justifies a second annotated bibliography, a sequel to Corberán and Prins (Networks 56 (2010), 50–69), discussing arc routing studies from 2010 onwards. These studies are grouped into three main sections: single vehicle problems, multiple vehicle problems and applications. Each main section catalogs problems according to their specifics. Section 2 is therefore composed of four subsections, namely: the Chinese Postman Problem, the Rural Postman Problem, the General Routing Problem (GRP) and Arc Routing Problems (ARPs) with profits. Section 3, devoted to the multiple vehicle case, begins with three subsections on the Capacitated Arc Routing Problem (CARP) and then delves into several variants of multiple ARPs, ending with GRPs and problems with profits. Section 4 is devoted to applications, including distribution and collection routes, outdoor activities, post-disaster operations, road cleaning and marking. A concise guide to existing and emerging vehicle routing problem variants
Vehicle routing problems have been the focus of extensive research over the
past sixty years, driven by their economic importance and their theoretical
interest. The diversity of applications has motivated the study of a myriad of
problem variants with different attributes. In this article, we provide a
concise overview of existing and emerging problem variants. Models are
typically refined along three lines: considering more relevant objectives and
performance metrics, integrating vehicle routing evaluations with other
tactical decisions, and capturing fine-grained yet essential aspects of modern
supply chains. We organize the main problem attributes within this structured
framework. We discuss recent research directions and pinpoint current
shortcomings, recent successes, and emerging challenges
