Rapid manufacturing as a tool for agile manufacturing: applications and implementation perspectives
Manufacturing engineers and technologists around the globe are already well familiar with manufacturing methodologies and systems developments in the last part of the twentieth century. Many are probably also familiar with the current state of Rapid Prototyping (RP) technologies, especially in the areas of concept model making and prototype development. They may not however, be so familiar with the more recent developments of these technologies towards Rapid Manufacturing (RM) and the directions which the applications of RM technologies are taking for agile manufacturing purposes in particular. This paper critically reviews the various technologies currently available, outlines development trends in RM, discusses the approach, application and implementation perspectives by which these RM technologies are applied for increasing agility and responsiveness in manufacturing. Furthermore, the paper describes two case study examples to further illustrate the application scenarios in agile manufacturing before concluding remarks
Sustainability principles through educational e-textile kit
Innovations in smart textiles technology are on the rise with a promise to add value to the consumer's life (Goodman et al., 2018). However, these innovations and the high development speed involved also raise concerns about environmental issues related to these trends (Van der Velden et al., 2015). Therefore, TTorch project was created which aim is to bring different fields, like electronics and textile engineering, together to create a kit for educational purposes and follow circular economy principles while doing it. TTorch is a creative toy with a development kit for up to 10-year-old children, using e-textile principles. The product kit creates a bridge between engineering and design, by letting the user explore a personal light source and build surroundings to it. The goal of the project is to show how interdisciplinary fields can work together and with that creating different opportunities. This paper gives a short overview of e-textiles, research on e-waste, textile waste and e-textile waste management. Further on it will focus on the necessary collaboration between design, engineering and industry by emphasising difference between core team and network around the core team. The collaboration aim it to create ecological product kit for educational purposes following the concept of STEAM. Discussions will include how collaboration between team members with diverse backgrounds, and surrounding network was necessary to identify specific gap in the market and to evolve the idea from product to development kit
The Joint Center for Energy Storage Research: A New Paradigm for Battery Research and Development
The Joint Center for Energy Storage Research (JCESR) seeks transformational
change in transportation and the electricity grid driven by next generation
high performance, low cost electricity storage. To pursue this transformative
vision JCESR introduces a new paradigm for battery research: integrating
discovery science, battery design, research prototyping and manufacturing
collaboration in a single highly interactive organization. This new paradigm
will accelerate the pace of discovery and innovation and reduce the time from
conceptualization to commercialization. JCESR applies its new paradigm
exclusively to beyond-lithium-ion batteries, a vast, rich and largely
unexplored frontier. This review presents JCESR's motivation, vision, mission,

Part Fabrication Using Laser Machining and Welding
This paper describes the current work on a laser cutting and welding system for
the fabrication of prototype parts in mild and .. stainless steels. The relationship
to other rapid prototyping systems and to laminated tool production techniques is

Rapid Prototyping of PEM Fuel Cell Bi-Polar Plates using 3D Printing and Thermal Spray Deposition
This article presents the results of exploratory research on novel methods for the
fabrication of functional, metallic, gas flow, bi polar plates (BPP) for use in proton
exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFC). Low cost, high speed, additive manufacturing
methods that combine 3D printing (3DP) and thermal spray (TS) technologies are
described. Functional flow plates were manufactured by creating 3DP patterns and then
depositing, and releasing, dense metals with TS methods. The new method yields dense
metal plates, with interesting options for material choices and complex designs.Mechanical Engineerin
Development of a task analysis tool to facilitate user interface design
A good user interface is one that facilitates the user in carrying out his task. Such interfaces are difficult and costly to produce. The most important aspect in producing a good interface is the ability to communicate to the software designers what the user's task is. The Task Analysis Tool is a system for cooperative task analysis and specification of the user interface requirements. This tool is intended to serve as a guide to development of initial prototypes for user feedback
