    A Look at the NEB-OT

    Get PDF
A reviewer of the New English Bible (NEB) is inclined to compare this text with that of the 18-year-old Revised Version (RSV) and the new Jerusalem Bible. Before he compares these three versions, he needs to note the difference in backgrounds in each case. The RSV is, of course, not a new translation, but as the name indicates, it is a revision of the old King James Version. Its purpose is to bring the Authorized Version up-to-date, modernizing words and phrases that might not be intelligible to the reader of the 20th century

It is argued in this essay that we can have an »original grasp of the attitude of other persons« (»originales Erfassen«) of persons’ acts, like love hence we know about love not only because of our self-awareness. In this essay I examine two different kinds of spousal love and compare them with each other. For this examination I am using the example of the spousal love of St. Agnes, the bride of Christ

It is argued in this essay that we can have an »original knowledge or recognition« (»originales Erfassen«) of a person’s acts, like for example love, which is the reason we know about love and not only due to our self-awareness. In this essay I examine two different kinds of spousal love and compare them with each other. For this examination I am using the example of the spousal love of St. Agnes, the bride of Christ. When we love someone, our love is our »response« to the intrinsic preciousness of the beloved, of his uniqueness and exclusivity as this person and his beauty. The lover belongs to the beloved and the beloved to the lover, they live within each other, in each other’s hearts and »lost is the key« as the poet says. It is an incredible eternal joy for the bride of Christ not only to love her Bridegroom with all her heart, with all her soul, with all her strength, but also to be able to adore her Bridegroom, in the strictest sense of the word. For the bride of Christ, Christ’s desire becomes her very own desire. And similar to the mundane bride who wistfully awaits her wedding night, the bride of Christ also awaits her wedding night, the spiritual union with her Lord, »sweeter than milk and honey, the eternal kiss of the Beloved«

The concept of GOD'S FACE as an anthropopathism in the Old Testament

    Get PDF
The aim of the paper is to present the concept of GOD’S FACE functioning as an anthropopathism in the language of the Old Testament. According to biblical scholars, anthropopathisms along with anthropomorphisms constitute the metaphorical means for the personification of God in the Bible. It means that in biblical discourse, God is perceived as a human being by referring either to His appearance (anthropomorphism), or feelings, attitudes and ways of interaction with people (anthropopathism). Interestingly, from a linguistic perspective, the concept of FACE may function in language as a metonymy for emotions. In Anna Wierzbicka’s view, facial paralanguage replaces the linguistic production and it is possible to talk about “the semantics of facial expression.” In the Old Testament, the personified God’s facial paralanguage includes showing and hiding His face, turning it to/against people, as well as looking, listening and eating. Those descriptions exhibit numerous instances of the application of the concept of GOD’S FACE to express a variety of God’s feelings and attitudes towards people. The range of God’s emotions presented in this way involves both positive feelings, such as joy, peace and safety, as well as the negative ones, such as offence, anger or terror. Moreover, GOD’S FACE teaches and guides people or judges and destroys them. In addition, it can be observed that THE FACE FOR THE EXPRESSION OF EMOTIONS metonymy co-occurs with such metonymies as THE FACE for the person, the presence, the personality, and the confrontation with someone, producing complex interactions of conceptual mappings

    Maltese medical Pauline traditions

    Get PDF
The advent of the apostle Paul and evangelist Luke to the Maltese Islands in 60 AD led to the development of a number of pseudo-historic and medical beliefs that apparently saw their rise around the 12th century and reached a climax during the 17-18th centuries when an indigenous materia medica known as terra sigillata melitensis was being prepared and exported overseas. This eventually fell into disrepute by the latter half of the 19th century.peer-reviewe

Right to life under legal and jurisprudential standards: Implications for Nigeria

    Get PDF
Life is of the essence in every human existence, and protection of this right is of global concern. The right to life enshrined in many legal instruments is as old as civilization. Although it is not an absolute right yet no one has the right to take his or another’s life unlawfully. Neither law nor morality welcomes such rascality. In a civilised and well informed society, the life of every individual is importantly appreciated and adequately protected. Today, despite the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR) 1948, and other domestic and international legal provisions for the protection of the right to life, the right to life has in practice remained under constant threat even by world leaders. This paper discusses jurisprudence of life bringing to fore the historical background and evolutionary concept of life. Secondly, it examines life in the indigenous culture having the original Igbo tradition in focus. It further discusses some legal instruments for the protection of the right to life and the effectiveness of the Universal Declaration of Human Right in safeguarding the right to life in Nigeria and the globe. Recommendations are made. Keywords: Jurisprudence, Human Life, Universal Declaration, Human Right, Nigeri

WHO IS THE “MINER”? A BRIEF EXEGESIS OF JOB 28:4

    Get PDF
There is a long tradition of researching the book of Job and the meaning behind the imagery presented. Job 28:4, is not without its own imagery especially the image of the ―miner‖ and ―foreigner.‖ Unpacking the meaning behind the ―miner‖ and its use in the Old Testament, is quite interesting. Addressing the image of the ―miner‖ within the context of the book of Job and other books in the Old Testament shows the complex meaning of the search for wisdom. The analysis of the text provides evidence for the meaning of the image of the ―miner‖ as well as the overall search for wisdom. What is verse 4 telling its readers? How does it fit into the larger work of the book of Job? This work will address these questions and show that the 4th verse in the book of Job does indeed fit into wisdom literature
