An Analysis of Finding Aid Structure and Authority Control for Large Architectural Collections

    Get PDF
This study discusses best practices in describing architectural records in special collections repositories through encoded finding aids. It argues that metadata elements within these finding aids could serve as more effective access points if end users were more easily able to develop their own ways of highlighting relationships which exist within and across collections. Based on the information gathered from semi-structured interviews, this paper reports how other archivists developed institutional standards with which to catalog and process their architectural collections. Finally, this paper provides examples of what could be achieved in the realm of data visualization in an attempt to inspire repositories to make it easier for end users to extract the metadata that archivists and librarians spend so much time collecting.Master of Science in Library Scienc

Implications of LIS Instructors' E-resource Selections for Student Privacy Interests and Academic Library Values

    Get PDF
This paper reviews materials from Fall 2013 courses and others at the School of Information and Library Science at the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill to assess (a) how students' privacy interests were affected by instructors' choice of electronic resources and (b) the extent to which instructors utilized university libraries as a means through which to access resources. Instructors choose resources and means of access that compromise students' privacy interests; students are directed to access third party websites, thereby agreeing to these websites' privacy policies and terms of service, which results in these websites inserting dataveillance mechanisms into students' computers' and continuously harvesting their personal information Nor do instructors seem to utilize University Libraries as a resource to the greatest extent possible, thus impeding University Libraries' ability to assess value.Master of Science in Library Scienc

    Lingwistyka kulturowa

    Get PDF
According to the author, Cultural Linguistics (necessarily capitalised) is a multidisciplinary area of research on the relationhsip between language, culture, and cognition. Following Palmer, the author locates Cultural Linguistics in the vicinity of cognitive linguistics (with its image schemas, conceptual metaphors, and cognitive structures) and linguistic anthropology (which includes Boasian linguistics, ethnosemantics, and ethnography of speaking). The common platform for Cultural Linguistics, linguistic anthropology, and cognitive linguistics is an exploration of cultural models, which belong to the broader category of cultural conceptualisations. Recently Cultural Linguistics has incorporated insights from such areas as complexity theory or the notion of distributed cognition, enriching its own understanding of cultural cognition. Three areas of application of Cultural Linguistics are discussed: investigation of world Englishes, diagnosing causes of misunderstandings in intercultural communication, and identifiying cases of linguistic manipulation in the use of metaphors in political discourse. Wspólną płaszczyznę zainteresowań lingwistyki kulturowej, antropologii lingwistycznej i lingwistyki kognitywnej tworzą modele kulturowe przynależne do szerszej kategorii konceptualizacji kulturowych. Ostatnio lingwistyka kulturowa korzysta z nowych podejść badawczych, takich jak teoria systemów złożonych lub koncepcja poznania rozproszonego i wzbogaca swoje rozumienie poznania kulturowego.  Autor  w kolejności omawia  trzy obszary zastosowań lingwistyki kulturowej: do badania  odmian angielszczyzny, do diagnozowania przyczyn  nieporozumień w komunikacji międzykulturowej, do ujawniania manipulacji językowej w sposobie posługiwania się metaforami w dyskursie politycznym

    Integrative Levels of Knowing

This dissertation is concerned with a systematic organization of the epistemological dimension of human knowledge in terms of viewpoints and methods. In particular, it will be explored to what extent the well-known organizing principle of integrative levels that presents a developmental hierarchy of complexity and integration can be applied for a basic classification of viewpoints or epistemic outlooks. The central thesis pursued in this investigation is that an adequate analysis of such epistemic contexts requires tools that allow to compare and evaluate divergent or even conflicting frames of reference according to context-transcending standards and criteria. This task demands a theoretical and methodological foundation that avoids the limitation of radical contextualism and its inherent threat of a fragmentation of knowledge due to the alleged incommensurability of the underlying frames of reference. Based on Jürgen Habermas’s Theory of Communicative Action and his methodology of hermeneutic reconstructionism, it will be argued that epistemic pluralism does not necessarily imply epistemic relativism and that a systematic organization of the multiplicity of perspectives can benefit from already existing models of cognitive development as reconstructed in research fields like psychology, social sciences, and humanities. The proposed cognitive-developmental approach to knowledge organization aims to contribute to a multi-perspective knowledge organization by offering both analytical tools for cross-cultural comparisons of knowledge organization systems (e.g., Seven Epitomes and Dewey Decimal Classification) and organizing principles for context representation that help to improve the expressiveness of existing documentary languages (e.g., Integrative Levels Classification). Additionally, the appendix includes an extensive compilation of conceptions and models of Integrative Levels of Knowing from a broad multidisciplinary field

Competency-Based Curriculum for a Master\u27s Program in Service Science, Management and Engineering (SSME): An Online Delphi Study

    Get PDF
The overarching purpose of this research was to provide theoretical and conceptual foundations for developing a competency-based curriculum for an interdisciplinary master\u27s program in Service Science, Management and Engineering (SSME). Specifically, the objective was to ascertain the competencies and courses that are relevant for developing a competency model for a service scientist and a curriculum blueprint for SSME. The study employed three rounds of the online Delphi survey to achieve the research objectives. The three rounds were used to identify, prioritize, and define competencies and courses. A panel of industry professionals and university faculty were invited to participate as experts. A total of 51, 40, and 39 respondents participated in Round 1, Round 2 and Round 3 survey respectively. Overall, a high degree of consensus was observed among the participants for the importance of competencies and courses, however, there were some differences noted by the disciplinary expertise and professional background of the respondents. Based on the consensus of the study participants, a final list of 10 competencies and 14 courses was generated. These competencies were used to develop a competency model and the courses were used to create a curriculum blueprint. The final 14 courses were categorized into four modules, Module 1: Contextual Foundation (Information & Service Economy, Consumer Behavior, Leadership & Organizational Behavior, Project Management); Module 2: Service Core (Service Innovation, Service Design, Service Operations and Supply Chain); Module 3(a): Engineering Concentration (Business Process Modeling, Service Engineering, Quality Management); Module 3(b): Management Concentration, Strategic Management, Service Marketing, Enterprise Systems) and; Module 4: Integrative Capstone (Business and Technology Integration). The final 10 competencies were categorized into three clusters; Cluster 1: Service Mindset (Needs assessment, Conceptualize service system, Problem-solving, Contextualize service science); Cluster 2: Integrative Competence (Business and technology integration, Interdisciplinary collaboration, Diversity orientation) and; Cluster 3: Meta-competence (Adaptability, Interpersonal communication, and Critical thinking). The results of this study may serve as a common language among stakeholders to prepare future service scientists or T-shaped professionals for the service economy. This study also contributed to the body of literature of competency-based curriculum development in higher education

Open and Equitable Scholarly Communications: Creating a More Inclusive Future

    Get PDF
For many years, the academic and research library workforce has worked to accelerate the transition to more open and equitable systems of scholarship. While significant progress has been made, barriers remain. The Association of College and Research Libraries (ACRL) seeks to stimulate further advances through this action- oriented research agenda, which is designed to provide practical, actionable information for academic librarians; include the perspectives of historically underrepresented communities in order to expand the profession’s understanding of research environments and scholarly communication systems; and point librarians and other scholars toward important research questions to investigate. This report represents a yearlong process of reviewing the scholarly and practice-based literature to take into account established investigation coupled with extensive public consultation to identify the major problems facing the academic library community. Through interviews, focus groups, workshops, and an online survey, over 1,000 members of the ACRL community offered their thoughts and expertise to shape this research agenda. Incorporating guidance and input from ACRL’s Research and Scholarly Environment Committee and an advisory panel, this document recommends ways to make the scholarly communications and research environment more open, inclusive, and equitable

    Ontology of knowledge organization

    Get PDF
The aim of the research documented in the thesis was to design an ontology for the knowledge organization domain. Three requirements specifying areas of ontology use have been identified: making of statements for a knowledge base for knowledge organization, indexing of resources in the domain and interlinking with content-relevant ontologies. The design was elaborated by the method of reengineering the first version of ontology, created in the framework of the NAKI research project Knowledge base for subject area of knowledge organization in 2013-2015. The second version of ontology is based on the DOLCE foundational ontology, specifically on the reusing of its selected classes and predicates, including the axioms associated with them. The reengineering of the content of the first version of ontology was done by the domain and facet analysis methodology. The outcome is divided in two interlinked modules - axiomatized heavy- weight core ontology and light-weight terminological ontology. The ontology offers a solution to the compatibility of Czech and world terminology, it applies an extended concept of domain beyond the scope of memory institutions, and it presents a partial contribution to the development of the theory of knowledge organization. The content of the thesis is divided into five...Cílem výzkumu dokumentovaného v disertaci bylo navrhnout ontologii pro doménu organizace znalostí. Byly stanoveny tři požadavky specifikující oblasti užití ontologie: tvorba výroků pro znalostní bázi organizace znalostí, indexace zdrojů v doméně a propojení s věcně relevantními ontologiemi. Ontologie nabízí řešení kompatibility české a světové oborové terminologie, uplatňuje rozšířené pojetí domény přesahující hranice paměťových institucí a je dílčím příspěvkem k rozvoji teorie oboru organizace znalostí. Obsah práce je členěn do pěti kapitol. V první kapitole je podán přehled současného stavu teorie a praxe informatických ontologií, založený na literárním průzkumu. Druhá kapitola charakterizuje metody, využité k návrhu první i druhé verze ontologie organizace...Institute of Information Studies and LibrarianshipÚstav informačních studií a knihovnictvíFilozofická fakultaFaculty of Art
