    Unifying terrain awareness for the visually impaired through real-time semantic segmentation.

    Navigational assistance aims to help visually-impaired people to ambulate the environment safely and independently. This topic becomes challenging as it requires detecting a wide variety of scenes to provide higher level assistive awareness. Vision-based technologies with monocular detectors or depth sensors have sprung up within several years of research. These separate approaches have achieved remarkable results with relatively low processing time and have improved the mobility of impaired people to a large extent. However, running all detectors jointly increases the latency and burdens the computational resources. In this paper, we put forward seizing pixel-wise semantic segmentation to cover navigation-related perception needs in a unified way. This is critical not only for the terrain awareness regarding traversable areas, sidewalks, stairs and water hazards, but also for the avoidance of short-range obstacles, fast-approaching pedestrians and vehicles. The core of our unification proposal is a deep architecture, aimed at attaining efficient semantic understanding. We have integrated the approach in a wearable navigation system by incorporating robust depth segmentation. A comprehensive set of experiments prove the qualified accuracy over state-of-the-art methods while maintaining real-time speed. We also present a closed-loop field test involving real visually-impaired users, demonstrating the effectivity and versatility of the assistive framework

    A Modelling Approach To Human Navigation in Constrained Spaces

    In this thesis, we consider algorithms and systems which dynamically guide evacuees towards exits during an emergency to minimise building evacuation time. We observe that the "shortest safe path" routing approach is inadequate when congestion is a predominant factor, and therefore focus on systems which manage congestion. We first implement a "Reactive" metric which compares paths based on real-time transit times. We find that regular route corrections must be issued to address the constant changes in path delays, and that routes oscillate. We also implement a model-based "Proactive" metric which forecasts the increase in future congestion that results from every routing decision, allowing the routing algorithm to operate offline. We combine both metrics with the Cognitive Packet Network (CPN), a distributed self-aware routing algorithm which uses neural networks to efficiently explore the building graph. We also present the first thorough sensitivity analysis on CPN's parameters, and use this to tune CPN for optimal performance. We then compare the proactive and reactive approaches through simulation and find both approaches reduce building evacuation times -- especially when evacuees are not evenly distributed in the building. We also find major differences between the Proactive and Reactive approach, in terms of stability, flexibility, sensory requirements, etc. Finally, we consider guiding evacuees using dynamic exit signs, whose pointing direction can be controlled. Dynamic signs can readily be used with Reactive routing, but since Proactive routing issues routes on an individual basis, one display is required for each evacuee. This is incompatible with dynamic signs; therefore we propose a novel algorithm which controls the dynamic signs according to the Proactive algorithm's output. We simulate both systems, compare their performance, and review their practical limitations. For both approaches, we find that updating the sign's display more often improves performance, but this may reduce evacuee compliance and make the system inefficient in real-life conditions.Open Acces

    A review of smartphones based indoor positioning: challenges and applications

    The continual proliferation of mobile devices has encouraged much effort in using the smartphones for indoor positioning. This article is dedicated to review the most recent and interesting smartphones based indoor navigation systems, ranging from electromagnetic to inertia to visible light ones, with an emphasis on their unique challenges and potential real-world applications. A taxonomy of smartphones sensors will be introduced, which serves as the basis to categorise different positioning systems for reviewing. A set of criteria to be used for the evaluation purpose will be devised. For each sensor category, the most recent, interesting and practical systems will be examined, with detailed discussion on the open research questions for the academics, and the practicality for the potential clients

    Development of new intelligent autonomous robotic assistant for hospitals

    Continuous technological development in modern societies has increased the quality of life and average life-span of people. This imposes an extra burden on the current healthcare infrastructure, which also creates the opportunity for developing new, autonomous, assistive robots to help alleviate this extra workload. The research question explored the extent to which a prototypical robotic platform can be created and how it may be implemented in a hospital environment with the aim to assist the hospital staff with daily tasks, such as guiding patients and visitors, following patients to ensure safety, and making deliveries to and from rooms and workstations. In terms of major contributions, this thesis outlines five domains of the development of an actual robotic assistant prototype. Firstly, a comprehensive schematic design is presented in which mechanical, electrical, motor control and kinematics solutions have been examined in detail. Next, a new method has been proposed for assessing the intrinsic properties of different flooring-types using machine learning to classify mechanical vibrations. Thirdly, the technical challenge of enabling the robot to simultaneously map and localise itself in a dynamic environment has been addressed, whereby leg detection is introduced to ensure that, whilst mapping, the robot is able to distinguish between people and the background. The fourth contribution is geometric collision prediction into stabilised dynamic navigation methods, thus optimising the navigation ability to update real-time path planning in a dynamic environment. Lastly, the problem of detecting gaze at long distances has been addressed by means of a new eye-tracking hardware solution which combines infra-red eye tracking and depth sensing. The research serves both to provide a template for the development of comprehensive mobile assistive-robot solutions, and to address some of the inherent challenges currently present in introducing autonomous assistive robots in hospital environments.Open Acces

    This paper presents a fuzzy logic based method to track user satisfaction without the need for devices to monitor users physiological conditions. User satisfaction is the key to any product’s acceptance; computer applications and video games provide a unique opportunity to provide a tailored environment for each user to better suit their needs. We have implemented a non-adaptive fuzzy logic model of emotion, based on the emotional component of the Fuzzy Logic Adaptive Model of Emotion (FLAME) proposed by El-Nasr, to estimate player emotion in UnrealTournament 2004. In this paper we describe the implementation of this system and present the results of one of several play tests. Our research contradicts the current literature that suggests physiological measurements are needed. We show that it is possible to use a software only method to estimate user emotion

    Decentralized data fusion and data harvesting framework for heterogeneous dynamic network systems

    Diese Dissertation behandelt das Thema der dezentralisieren Sammlung und Fusion von Daten in heterogenen, ressourcenbeschraekten und dynamischen Netzwerkszenarien. Dazu wird ein generisches Framework vorgestellt, dass es erlaubt die Datensammlung, den Datenaustausch und auch die Datenfusion dynamisch zu konfigurieren. Im Zuge dessen wird auch eine Methode zur gerichteten Fusion von Daten auf graphentheoretischer Basis eingefrt, die es erlaubt eine logische Struktur fuer die Fusion von Informationen zu modellieren. Eine Markup-Sprache, die sowohl menschen- als auch maschinenlesbar ist, erlaubt es diese Struktur leicht zu editieren. Im Bereich der Protokolle zum Datenaustausch liegt der Fokus dieser Arbeit auf Energieeffizienz, um auch ressourcenbeschraenkte Geraete einzubinden. Ein weiterer Schwerpunkt liegt auf Robustheit fuer die betrachteten dynamischen Szenarien. Diese Dissertation schlaet zudem Design-Richtlinien vor, um verschiedene Ziele fuer unterschiedliche Applikationen umzusetzen. Diese lassen sich leicht in das vorgestellte Framework integrieren und darueber konfigurieren. Dadurch ergibt sich im Ganzen eine flexible Architektur, die sich leicht an dynamische Umgebungen anpassen laesst.With the increasing number of available smart phones, sensor nodes, and novel mobile smart devices such as Google glass, a large volume of data reflecting the environment is generated in the form of sensing data sources (such as GPS, received signal strength identification, accelerometer, microphone, images, videos and gyroscope, etc.). Some context-aware and data centric applications require the online processing of the data collected. The thesis researches on the decentralized data fusion and data harvesting framework for heterogeneous dynamic network system consisting of various devices with resource constraints. In order to achieve the flexible design, a general architecture is provided while the detailed data fusion and data exchange functions can be dynamically configured. A novel method to use directed fusion graph to model the logical structure of the distributed information fusion architecture is introduced. This directed fusion graph can accurately portray the interconnection among different data fusion components and the data exchange protocols, as well as the detailed data streams. The directed fusion graph is then transformed into a format with marked language, so that both human and machine can easily understand and edit. In the field of data exchange protocols, this thesis targets energy-efficiency considering the resource constraints of the devices and robustness, as the dynamic environment might cause failures to the system. It proposes a refined gossip strategy to reduce retransmission of redundant data. The thesis also suggests a design guideline to achieve different design aims for different applications. These results in this field can be integrated into the framework effortlessly. The configuration mechanism is another feature of this framework. Different from other research work which consider configuration as a post-design work separated from the main design of any middle-ware. This thesis considers the configuration part as another dimension of the framework. The whole strategy in configuration sets up the foundation for the flexible architecture, and makes it easy to adapt to the dynamic environment. The contributions in the above fields lead to a light-weight data fusion and data harvesting framework which can be deployed easily above wireless based, heterogeneous, dynamic network systems, even in extreme conditions, to handle data-centric applications

Algorithms and sensors have been developed to acquire and process many different biometric traits. Moreover, the biometric technology is being used in novel ways, with potential commercial and practical implications to our daily activities. The key objective of the book is to provide a collection of comprehensive references on some recent theoretical development as well as novel applications in biometrics. The topics covered in this book reflect well both aspects of development. They include biometric sample quality, privacy preserving and cancellable biometrics, contactless biometrics, novel and unconventional biometrics, and the technical challenges in implementing the technology in portable devices. The book consists of 15 chapters. It is divided into four sections, namely, biometric applications on mobile platforms, cancelable biometrics, biometric encryption, and other applications.
