Robotic Wireless Sensor Networks
In this chapter, we present a literature survey of an emerging, cutting-edge,
and multi-disciplinary field of research at the intersection of Robotics and
Wireless Sensor Networks (WSN) which we refer to as Robotic Wireless Sensor
Networks (RWSN). We define a RWSN as an autonomous networked multi-robot system
that aims to achieve certain sensing goals while meeting and maintaining
certain communication performance requirements, through cooperative control,
learning and adaptation. While both of the component areas, i.e., Robotics and
WSN, are very well-known and well-explored, there exist a whole set of new
opportunities and research directions at the intersection of these two fields
which are relatively or even completely unexplored. One such example would be
the use of a set of robotic routers to set up a temporary communication path
between a sender and a receiver that uses the controlled mobility to the
advantage of packet routing. We find that there exist only a limited number of
articles to be directly categorized as RWSN related works whereas there exist a
range of articles in the robotics and the WSN literature that are also relevant
to this new field of research. To connect the dots, we first identify the core
problems and research trends related to RWSN such as connectivity,
localization, routing, and robust flow of information. Next, we classify the
existing research on RWSN as well as the relevant state-of-the-arts from
robotics and WSN community according to the problems and trends identified in
the first step. Lastly, we analyze what is missing in the existing literature,
and identify topics that require more research attention in the future
Internet of robotic things : converging sensing/actuating, hypoconnectivity, artificial intelligence and IoT Platforms
The Internet of Things (IoT) concept is evolving rapidly and influencing newdevelopments in various application domains, such as the Internet of MobileThings (IoMT), Autonomous Internet of Things (A-IoT), Autonomous Systemof Things (ASoT), Internet of Autonomous Things (IoAT), Internetof Things Clouds (IoT-C) and the Internet of Robotic Things (IoRT) etc.that are progressing/advancing by using IoT technology. The IoT influencerepresents new development and deployment challenges in different areassuch as seamless platform integration, context based cognitive network integration,new mobile sensor/actuator network paradigms, things identification(addressing, naming in IoT) and dynamic things discoverability and manyothers. The IoRT represents new convergence challenges and their need to be addressed, in one side the programmability and the communication ofmultiple heterogeneous mobile/autonomous/robotic things for cooperating,their coordination, configuration, exchange of information, security, safetyand protection. Developments in IoT heterogeneous parallel processing/communication and dynamic systems based on parallelism and concurrencyrequire new ideas for integrating the intelligent “devices”, collaborativerobots (COBOTS), into IoT applications. Dynamic maintainability, selfhealing,self-repair of resources, changing resource state, (re-) configurationand context based IoT systems for service implementation and integrationwith IoT network service composition are of paramount importance whennew “cognitive devices” are becoming active participants in IoT applications.This chapter aims to be an overview of the IoRT concept, technologies,architectures and applications and to provide a comprehensive coverage offuture challenges, developments and applications
Robot guidance using machine vision techniques in industrial environments: A comparative review
In the factory of the future, most of the operations will be done by autonomous robots that need visual feedback to move around the working space avoiding obstacles, to work collaboratively with humans, to identify and locate the working parts, to complete the information provided by other sensors to improve their positioning accuracy, etc. Different vision techniques, such as photogrammetry, stereo vision, structured light, time of flight and laser triangulation, among others, are widely used for inspection and quality control processes in the industry and now for robot guidance. Choosing which type of vision system to use is highly dependent on the parts that need to be located or measured. Thus, in this paper a comparative review of different machine vision techniques for robot guidance is presented. This work analyzes accuracy, range and weight of the sensors, safety, processing time and environmental influences. Researchers and developers can take it as a background information for their future works
A Reference Software Architecture for Social Robots
Social Robotics poses tough challenges to software designers who are required
to take care of difficult architectural drivers like acceptability, trust of
robots as well as to guarantee that robots establish a personalised interaction
with their users. Moreover, in this context recurrent software design issues
such as ensuring interoperability, improving reusability and customizability of
software components also arise.
Designing and implementing social robotic software architectures is a
time-intensive activity requiring multi-disciplinary expertise: this makes
difficult to rapidly develop, customise, and personalise robotic solutions.
These challenges may be mitigated at design time by choosing certain
architectural styles, implementing specific architectural patterns and using
particular technologies.
Leveraging on our experience in the MARIO project, in this paper we propose a
series of principles that social robots may benefit from. These principles lay
also the foundations for the design of a reference software architecture for
Social Robots. The ultimate goal of this work is to establish a common ground
based on a reference software architecture to allow to easily reuse robotic
software components in order to rapidly develop, implement, and personalise

Augmented Reality
Augmented Reality (AR) is a natural development from virtual reality (VR), which was developed several decades earlier. AR complements VR in many ways. Due to the advantages of the user being able to see both the real and virtual objects simultaneously, AR is far more intuitive, but it's not completely detached from human factors and other restrictions. AR doesn't consume as much time and effort in the applications because it's not required to construct the entire virtual scene and the environment. In this book, several new and emerging application areas of AR are presented and divided into three sections. The first section contains applications in outdoor and mobile AR, such as construction, restoration, security and surveillance. The second section deals with AR in medical, biological, and human bodies. The third and final section contains a number of new and useful applications in daily living and learning
Contributions to autonomous robust navigation of mobile robots in industrial applications
151 p.Un aspecto en el que las plataformas móviles actuales se quedan atrás en comparación con el punto que se ha alcanzado ya en la industria es la precisión. La cuarta revolución industrial trajo consigo la implantación de maquinaria en la mayor parte de procesos industriales, y una fortaleza de estos es su repetitividad. Los robots móviles autónomos, que son los que ofrecen una mayor flexibilidad, carecen de esta capacidad, principalmente debido al ruido inherente a las lecturas ofrecidas por los sensores y al dinamismo existente en la mayoría de entornos. Por este motivo, gran parte de este trabajo se centra en cuantificar el error cometido por los principales métodos de mapeado y localización de robots móviles,ofreciendo distintas alternativas para la mejora del posicionamiento.Asimismo, las principales fuentes de información con las que los robots móviles son capaces de realizarlas funciones descritas son los sensores exteroceptivos, los cuales miden el entorno y no tanto el estado del propio robot. Por esta misma razón, algunos métodos son muy dependientes del escenario en el que se han desarrollado, y no obtienen los mismos resultados cuando este varía. La mayoría de plataformas móviles generan un mapa que representa el entorno que les rodea, y fundamentan en este muchos de sus cálculos para realizar acciones como navegar. Dicha generación es un proceso que requiere de intervención humana en la mayoría de casos y que tiene una gran repercusión en el posterior funcionamiento del robot. En la última parte del presente trabajo, se propone un método que pretende optimizar este paso para así generar un modelo más rico del entorno sin requerir de tiempo adicional para ello

The emergence of care robotics - A patent and publication analysis
Care robots are a means to support elderly people affected by physical or mental handicaps to remain as autonomous as possible or regain already lost autonomy (e.g. running stairs). They also support care-takers when working with handicapped. We review the emergence of care robotics and particularly offer answers to two research questions: Which organizations and individuals in which countries have been and are active in research and development? How has research and development emerged with regard to activity focus, intensity levels and cooperation?
The analysis rests on PATSTAT patent and ISI Web of Science publication data. Bibliographic and network analyses are conducted on country, organization (i.e. universities and firms) and individual levels. We find that care robotics research and development activities have constantly increased since the late 1970s. Today Japanese universities and firms are the most active players, while in early stages US and European organizations pioneered care robotics research. Starting from six disjunctive small networks, several highly interconnected care robotics research networks have evolved. However, most cooperation clusters are still found within the same country. Only few international hubs emerged. Among them are two Japanese organizations (ATR, AIST) and Carnegie Mellon University, US.This is the accepted manuscript. Touch and Go: Learning from Human-Collected Vision and Touch
The ability to associate touch with sight is essential for tasks that require
physically interacting with objects in the world. We propose a dataset with
paired visual and tactile data called Touch and Go, in which human data
collectors probe objects in natural environments using tactile sensors, while
simultaneously recording egocentric video. In contrast to previous efforts,
which have largely been confined to lab settings or simulated environments, our
dataset spans a large number of "in the wild" objects and scenes. To
demonstrate our dataset's effectiveness, we successfully apply it to a variety
of tasks: 1) self-supervised visuo-tactile feature learning, 2) tactile-driven
image stylization, i.e., making the visual appearance of an object more
consistent with a given tactile signal, and 3) predicting future frames of a
