Real Time Animation of Virtual Humans: A Trade-off Between Naturalness and Control
Virtual humans are employed in many interactive applications using 3D virtual environments, including (serious) games. The motion of such virtual humans should look realistic (or ânaturalâ) and allow interaction with the surroundings and other (virtual) humans. Current animation techniques differ in the trade-off they offer between motion naturalness and the control that can be exerted over the motion. We show mechanisms to parametrize, combine (on different body parts) and concatenate motions generated by different animation techniques. We discuss several aspects of motion naturalness and show how it can be evaluated. We conclude by showing the promise of combinations of different animation paradigms to enhance both naturalness and control
Control with Probabilistic Signal Temporal Logic
Autonomous agents often operate in uncertain environments where their
decisions are made based on beliefs over states of targets. We are interested
in controller synthesis for complex tasks defined over belief spaces. Designing
such controllers is challenging due to computational complexity and the lack of
expressivity of existing specification languages. In this paper, we propose a
probabilistic extension to signal temporal logic (STL) that expresses tasks
over continuous belief spaces. We present an efficient synthesis algorithm to
find a control input that maximises the probability of satisfying a given task.
We validate our algorithm through simulations of an unmanned aerial vehicle

Timed Automata Approach for Motion Planning Using Metric Interval Temporal Logic
In this paper, we consider the robot motion (or task) planning problem under
some given time bounded high level specifications. We use metric interval
temporal logic (MITL), a member of the temporal logic family, to represent the
task specification and then we provide a constructive way to generate a timed
automaton and methods to look for accepting runs on the automaton to find a

Analyzing Whole-Body Pose Transitions in Multi-Contact Motions
When executing whole-body motions, humans are able to use a large variety of
support poses which not only utilize the feet, but also hands, knees and elbows
to enhance stability. While there are many works analyzing the transitions
involved in walking, very few works analyze human motion where more complex
supports occur.
In this work, we analyze complex support pose transitions in human motion
involving locomotion and manipulation tasks (loco-manipulation). We have
applied a method for the detection of human support contacts from motion
capture data to a large-scale dataset of loco-manipulation motions involving
multi-contact supports, providing a semantic representation of them. Our
results provide a statistical analysis of the used support poses, their
transitions and the time spent in each of them. In addition, our data partially
validates our taxonomy of whole-body support poses presented in our previous
work.
We believe that this work extends our understanding of human motion for
humanoids, with a long-term objective of developing methods for autonomous
