When Systems Engineering Meets Software Language Engineering
International audienceThe engineering of systems involves many different stakeholders, each with their own domain of expertise. Hence more and more organizations are adopting Domain Specific Languages (DSLs) to allow domain experts to express solutions directly in terms of relevant domain concepts. This new trend raises new challenges about designing DSLs, evolving a set of DSLs and coordinating the use of multiple DSLs for both DSL designers and DSL users. This paper explores various dimensions of these challenges, and outlines a possible research roadmap for addressing them. The message of this paper is also to claim that if language engineering techniques to design any single (disposable) language are mature, the language engineering community needs to fundamentally change its view on software language design. We need to take the next step and adopt the perspective that a software language is, fundamentally, software too and thus the result of a composition of design decisions. These design decisions should be represented as first-class entities in the software languages workbench and it should be possible, during the language lifecycle, to add, remove and change language design decisions with limited effort to go from continuous design to continuous meta-design
Metamorphic Domain-Specific Languages: A Journey Into the Shapes of a Language
External or internal domain-specific languages (DSLs) or (fluent) APIs?
Whoever you are -- a developer or a user of a DSL -- you usually have to choose
your side; you should not! What about metamorphic DSLs that change their shape
according to your needs? We report on our 4-years journey of providing the
"right" support (in the domain of feature modeling), leading us to develop an
external DSL, different shapes of an internal API, and maintain all these
languages. A key insight is that there is no one-size-fits-all solution or no
clear superiority of a solution compared to another. On the contrary, we found
that it does make sense to continue the maintenance of an external and internal
DSL. The vision that we foresee for the future of software languages is their
ability to be self-adaptable to the most appropriate shape (including the
corresponding integrated development environment) according to a particular
usage or task. We call metamorphic DSL such a language, able to change from one
shape to another shape
Applying MDE tools to defining domain specific languages for model management
In the model driven engineering (MDE), modeling languages play a central role. They range from the most generic languages such as UML, to more individual ones, called domain-specific modeling languages (DSML). These languages are used to create and manage models and must accompany them throughout their life cycle and evolution. Little languages : little maintenance?
So-called little, or domain-specific languages (DSLs), have the potential to make software maintenance simpler: domain-experts can directly use the DSL to make required routine modifications. At the negative side, however, more substantial changes may become more difficult: such changes may involve altering the domain-specific language. This will require compiler technology knowledge, which not every commercial enterprise has easily available. Based on experience taken from industrial practice, we discuss the role of DSLs in software maintenance, the dangers introduced by using them, and techniques for controlling the risks involved
Domain Specific Languages for Managing Feature Models: Advances and Challenges
International audienceManaging multiple and complex feature models is a tedious and error-prone activity in software product line engineering. Despite many advances in formal methods and analysis techniques, the supporting tools and APIs are not easily usable together, nor unified. In this paper, we report on the development and evolution of the Familiar Domain-Specific Language (DSL). Its toolset is dedicated to the large scale management of feature models through a good support for separating concerns, composing feature models and scripting manipulations. We overview various applications of Familiar and discuss both advantages and identified drawbacks. We then devise salient challenges to improve such DSL support in the near future
