    Wi-PoS : a low-cost, open source ultra-wideband (UWB) hardware platform with long range sub-GHz backbone

    Ultra-wideband (UWB) localization is one of the most promising approaches for indoor localization due to its accurate positioning capabilities, immunity against multipath fading, and excellent resilience against narrowband interference. However, UWB researchers are currently limited by the small amount of feasible open source hardware that is publicly available. We developed a new open source hardware platform, Wi-PoS, for precise UWB localization based on Decawave’s DW1000 UWB transceiver with several unique features: support of both long-range sub-GHz and 2.4 GHz back-end communication between nodes, flexible interfacing with external UWB antennas, and an easy implementation of the MAC layer with the Time-Annotated Instruction Set Computer (TAISC) framework. Both hardware and software are open source and all parameters of the UWB ranging can be adjusted, calibrated, and analyzed. This paper explains the main specifications of the hardware platform, illustrates design decisions, and evaluates the performance of the board in terms of range, accuracy, and energy consumption. The accuracy of the ranging system was below 10 cm in an indoor lab environment at distances up to 5 m, and accuracy smaller than 5 cm was obtained at 50 and 75 m in an outdoor environment. A theoretical model was derived for predicting the path loss and the influence of the most important ground reflection. At the same time, the average energy consumption of the hardware was very low with only 81 mA for a tag node and 63 mA for the active anchor nodes, permitting the system to run for several days on a mobile battery pack and allowing easy and fast deployment on sites without an accessible power supply or backbone network.     Wireless Communication Solution for Distributed Structural Health Monitoring

    This paper describes a design of wireless distributed SHM (Structure Health Monitoring) system with a particular emphasis on comparison of wireless communication standards. The presented solution is being deployed in the TULCOEMPA project. Several wireless communication standards are compared, with their benefits, disadvantages and typical areas of application. A choice of proper ISM (Industrial Scientific Medical) band and reasons for use of Wireless Sensor Networks are also discussed. The last part of this paper presents the proposed structure and designed prototype. The chosen architecture of the system and the program algorithm used for communication and measurements are described

    UWB localization with battery-powered wireless backbone for drone-based inventory management

    Current inventory-taking methods (counting stocks and checking correct placements) in large vertical warehouses are mostly manual, resulting in (i) large personnel costs, (ii) human errors and (iii) incidents due to working at large heights. To remedy this, the use of autonomous indoor drones has been proposed. However, these drones require accurate localization solutions that are easy to (temporarily) install at low costs in large warehouses. To this end, we designed a Ultra-Wideband (UWB) solution that uses infrastructure anchor nodes that do not require any wired backbone and can be battery powered. The resulting system has a theoretical update rate of up to 2892 Hz (assuming no hardware dependent delays). Moreover, the anchor nodes have an average current consumption of only 27 mA (compared to 130 mA of traditional UWB infrastructure nodes). Finally, the system has been experimentally validated and is available as open-source software

    STARC: Decentralized Coordination Primitive on Low-Power IoT Devices for Autonomous Intersection Management

    Wireless communication is an essential element within Intelligent Transportation Systems and motivates new approaches to intersection management, allowing safer and more efficient road usage. With lives at stake, wireless protocols should be readily available and guarantee safe coordination for all involved traffic participants, even in the presence of radio failures. This work introduces STARC, a coordination primitive for safe, decentralized resource coordination. Using STARC, traffic participants can safely coordinate at intersections despite unreliable radio environments and without a central entity or infrastructure. Unlike other methods that require costly and energy-consuming platforms, STARC utilizes affordable and efficient Internet of Things devices that connect cars, bicycles, electric scooters, pedestrians, and cyclists. For communication, STARC utilizes low-power IEEE 802.15.4 radios and Synchronous Transmissions for multi-hop communication. In addition, the protocol provides distributed transaction, election, and handover mechanisms for decentralized, thus cost-efficient, deployments. While STARC’s coordination remains resource-agnostic, this work presents and evaluates STARC in a roadside scenario. Our simulations have shown that using STARC at intersections leads to safer and more efficient vehicle coordination. We found that average waiting times can be reduced by up to 50% compared to using a fixed traffic light schedule in situations with fewer than 1000 vehicles per hour. Additionally, we design platooning on top of STARC, improving scalability and outperforming static traffic lights even at traffic loads exceeding 1000 vehicles per hour

    Long-Term Stable Communication in Centrally Scheduled Low-Power Wireless Networks

    With the emergence of the Internet of Things (IoT), more devices are connected than ever before. Most of these communicate wirelessly, forming Wireless Sensor Networks. In recent years, there has been a shift from personal networks, like Smart Home, to industrial networks. Industrial networks monitor pipelines or handle the communication between robots in factories. These new applications form the Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT). Many industrial applications have high requirements for communication, higher than the requirements of common IoT networks. Communications must stick to hard deadlines to avoid harm, and they must be highly reliable as skipping information is not a viable option when communicating critical information. Moreover, communication has to remain reliable over longer periods of time. As many sensor locations do not offer a power source, the devices have to run on battery and thus have to be power efficient. Current systems offer solutions for some of these requirements. However, they especially lack long-term stable communication that can dynamically adapt to changes in the wireless medium.In this thesis, we study the problem of stable and reliable communication in centrally scheduled low-power wireless networks. This communication ought to be stable when it can dynamically adapt to changes in the wireless medium while keeping latency at a minimum. We design and investigate approaches to solve the problem of low to high degrees of interference in the wireless medium. We propose three solutions to overcome interference: MASTER with Sliding Windows brings dynamic numbers of retransmissions to centrally scheduled low-power wireless networks, OVERTAKE allows to skip nodes affected by interference along the path, and AUTOBAHN combines opportunistic routing and synchronous transmissions with the Time-Slotted Channel Hopping (TSCH) MAC protocol to overcome local wide-band interference with the lowest possible latency. We evaluate our approaches in detail on testbed deployments and provide open-source implementations of the protocols to enable others to build their work upon them

    Synchronous and Concurrent Transmissions for Consensus in Low-Power Wireless

    With the emergence of the Internet of Things, autonomous vehicles and the Industry 4.0, the need for dependable yet adaptive network protocols is arising. Many of these applications build their operations on distributed consensus. For example, UAVs agree on maneuvers to execute, and industrial systems agree on set-points for actuators.Moreover, such scenarios imply a dynamic network topology due to mobility and interference, for example. Many applications are mission- and safety-critical, too.Failures could cost lives or precipitate economic losses.In this thesis, we design, implement and evaluate network protocols as a step towards enabling a low-power, adaptive and dependable ubiquitous networking that enables consensus in the Internet of Things. We make four main contributions:- We introduce Orchestra that addresses the challenge of bringing TSCH (Time Slotted Channel Hopping) to dynamic networks as envisioned in the Internet of Things. In Orchestra, nodes autonomously compute their local schedules and update automatically as the topology evolves without signaling overhead. Besides, it does not require a central or distributed scheduler. Instead, it relies on the existing network stack information to maintain the schedules.- We present A2 : Agreement in the Air, a system that brings distributed consensus to low-power multihop networks. A2 introduces Synchrotron, a synchronous transmissions kernel that builds a robust mesh by exploiting the capture effect, frequency hopping with parallel channels, and link-layer security. A2 builds on top of this layer and enables the two- and three-phase commit protocols, and services such as group membership, hopping sequence distribution, and re-keying.- We present Wireless Paxos, a fault-tolerant, network-wide consensus primitive for low-power wireless networks. It is a new variant of Paxos, a widely used consensus protocol, and is specifically designed to tackle the challenges of low-power wireless networks. By utilizing concurrent transmissions, it provides a dependable low-latency consensus.- We present BlueFlood, a protocol that adapts concurrent transmissions to Bluetooth. The result is fast and efficient data dissemination in multihop Bluetooth networks. Moreover, BlueFlood floods can be reliably received by off-the-shelf Bluetooth devices such as smartphones, opening new applications of concurrent transmissions and seamless integration with existing technologies

    Wireless Technologies for Indoor Asset Positioning

    The Positioning of assets in a manufacturing industry is one of the milestones in the process to increase the visibility inside the factory and improve the current manufacturing practices. Furthermore, in order to cope with the high mobility of the assets in a factory, the utilization of wireless technologies has been increased in the past few years in order to develop the positioning applications. However, the utilization of these technologies must not increase the complexity of the manufacturing systems. Therefore, the utilization of a common network protocol such as the Internet Protocol is preferred. The theoretical part of this thesis work presents a general description of the wireless technologies used in industrial environments. Additionally, it discusses the different methodologies and algorithms used for the positioning of assets applications in wireless networks in more detail. Furthermore, an introduction to the latest efforts and systems developed to address the problem of position estimation of assets in wireless networks is provided. In order to understand the realization of the IP-based wireless sensor networks, a brief review of the operating systems supporting this characteristic is presented. Finally a survey about the IP-ready wireless sensor network is performed in order to select the most suitable platform to use in the practical part of this work. The practical part of this thesis work focuses on the implementation of a real-time position estimation tool for manufacturing assets based on a Wireless Sensor Network for indoor environments. The main purpose is to estimate the position of a pallet allocated on a light assembly manufacturing line. In addition, the wireless sensor network utilizes the Internet Protocol version 6 as the networking protocol. Furthermore, the estimation parameter utilized by the tool is the received signal strength. Consequently, the position estimation methodologies based on the received signal strength are implemented by this tool. Finally, the position estimation tool was tested which is documented in the results section. /Kir1
