Effective interprocess communication (IPC) in a real-time transputer network
The thesis describes the design and implementation of an interprocess communication (IPC)
mechanism within a real-time distributed operating system kernel (RT-DOS) which is
designed for a transputer-based network. The requirements of real-time operating systems
are examined and existing design and implementation strategies are described. Particular
attention is paid to one of the object-oriented techniques although it is concluded that these
techniques are not feasible for the chosen implementation platform. Studies of a number of
existing operating systems are reported. The choices for various aspects of operating system
design and their influence on the IPC mechanism to be used are elucidated. The actual design
choices are related to the real-time requirements and the implementation that has been
adopted is described. [Continues.

The Internet of Things (IoT) concept is evolving rapidly and influencing newdevelopments in various application domains, such as the Internet of MobileThings (IoMT), Autonomous Internet of Things (A-IoT), Autonomous Systemof Things (ASoT), Internet of Autonomous Things (IoAT), Internetof Things Clouds (IoT-C) and the Internet of Robotic Things (IoRT) etc.that are progressing/advancing by using IoT technology. The IoT influencerepresents new development and deployment challenges in different areassuch as seamless platform integration, context based cognitive network integration,new mobile sensor/actuator network paradigms, things identification(addressing, naming in IoT) and dynamic things discoverability and manyothers. The IoRT represents new convergence challenges and their need to be addressed, in one side the programmability and the communication ofmultiple heterogeneous mobile/autonomous/robotic things for cooperating,their coordination, configuration, exchange of information, security, safetyand protection. Developments in IoT heterogeneous parallel processing/communication and dynamic systems based on parallelism and concurrencyrequire new ideas for integrating the intelligent “devices”, collaborativerobots (COBOTS), into IoT applications. Dynamic maintainability, selfhealing,self-repair of resources, changing resource state, (re-) configurationand context based IoT systems for service implementation and integrationwith IoT network service composition are of paramount importance whennew “cognitive devices” are becoming active participants in IoT applications.This chapter aims to be an overview of the IoRT concept, technologies,architectures and applications and to provide a comprehensive coverage offuture challenges, developments and applications
Industry Platforms: A New Mode of Coordination in the Economy
This discussion paper is a plea for an urgently needed shift in perspective: from the concentration of social science research on the ubiquitous platforms of the consumption- and communication-based internet to the investigation of the platform-oriented reorganization of industrial distribution, production and innovation processes, which has so far received far less attention. The paper focuses on two questions. Firstly, what distinguishes industrial platforms from the platforms that characterize the consumption- and- communication-based internet? Can typical peculiarities and overarching characteristics of platform-based forms of work and organization in industry be identified? And secondly, do platforms represent an independent form of organization and coordination of industrial market, production and innovation processes that is substantially different from organized networks? The paper undertakes an empirical mapping and classification of the little explored field of industrial platforms and discusses from a theoretical-conceptual perspective why platforms should be conceived of as a sui generis form of organization whose dominant mode of coordination can be described as rule-based curation
The Collaborative Work Concept and the Information Systems Support: Perspective for and from Manufacturing Industry
Most of the discussion and controversy on organisation of work concepts has been
referenced to the manufacturing industry along the 20th century: it started with the
concept of “scientific management” from Taylor, and continued with the new ideas on
the importance of human factors as Mayo pointed out in the 1930s. Immediately after
the 2nd World War Friedmann studied the human problems related to new manufacturing
technologies and automation. And the late 1950 and 1960s were decades of
strong debate on the socio-technics with the research at Tavistock Institute of London
and the emergence of national programmes on new forms of work organisation.
At the end of the last century the concept of collaborative work was developed
together with the definition(s) of information systems and organisational design.
However, the interest came from other production activities, like the services. This
article analyses the approaches developed on these debates on the collaborative work
and information system and its application to the manufacturing industry
