    Compositional Performance Modelling with the TIPPtool

    Stochastic process algebras have been proposed as compositional specification formalisms for performance models. In this paper, we describe a tool which aims at realising all beneficial aspects of compositional performance modelling, the TIPPtool. It incorporates methods for compositional specification as well as solution, based on state-of-the-art techniques, and wrapped in a user-friendly graphical front end. Apart from highlighting the general benefits of the tool, we also discuss some lessons learned during development and application of the TIPPtool. A non-trivial model of a real life communication system serves as a case study to illustrate benefits and limitations

    On the performance evaluation of multi-guarded marked graphs with single-server semantics

    In discrete event systems, a given task can start executing when all the required input data are available. The required input data for a given task may change along the evolution of the system. A way of modeling this changing requirement is through multi-guarded tasks. This paper studies the performance evaluation of the class of marked graphs extended with multi-guarded transitions (or tasks). Although the throughput of such systems can be computed through Markov chain analysis, two alternative methods are proposed to avoid the state explosion problem. The first one obtains throughput bounds in polynomial time through linear programming.     Modeling of quad-station module cluster tools using petri nets

    The semiconductor industry is highly competitive, and with the recent chip shortage, the throughput of wafers has become more important than ever. One of the tools that the industry has deployed is to use of quad-station modules instead of the traditional single-station modules that allow for higher throughput and better wafer consistency by processing multiple wafers at the same time and distributing work. The industry trend is to use multiple transfer chamber robots to stack the quad-station modules in a series, particularly for etch products. In this work, the quad-station cluster tool wafer movement is modeled by using Petri net as a process-bounded system. The system analysis and simulations are performed by using timed and colored Petri nets. The results are useful to deepen our understanding of the discrete-event dynamics of quad-station module cluster tools and offer the highly needed insight into their efficient and deadlock-free operation

    EyeRIS: A General-Purpose System for Eye Movement Contingent Display Control

    In experimental studies of visual performance, the need often emerges to modify the stimulus according to the eye movements perfonncd by the subject. The methodology of Eye Movement-Contingent Display (EMCD) enables accurate control of the position and motion of the stimulus on the retina. EMCD procedures have been used successfully in many areas of vision science, including studies of visual attention, eye movements, and physiological characterization of neuronal response properties. Unfortunately, the difficulty of real-time programming and the unavailability of flexible and economical systems that can be easily adapted to the diversity of experimental needs and laboratory setups have prevented the widespread use of EMCD control. This paper describes EyeRIS, a general-purpose system for performing EMCD experiments on a Windows computer. Based on a digital signal processor with analog and digital interfaces, this integrated hardware and software system is responsible for sampling and processing oculomotor signals and subject responses and modifying the stimulus displayed on a CRT according to the gaze-contingent procedure specified by the experimenter. EyeRIS is designed to update the stimulus within a delay of 10 ms. To thoroughly evaluate EyeRIS' perforltlancc, this study (a) examines the response of the system in a number of EMCD procedures and computational benchmarking tests, (b) compares the accuracy of implementation of one particular EMCD procedure, retinal stabilization, to that produced by a standard tool used for this task, and (c) examines EyeRIS' performance in one of the many EMCD procedures that cannot be executed by means of any other currently available device.National Institute of Health (EY15732-01

    Dynamic production system identification for smart manufacturing systems

    This paper presents a methodology, called production system identification, to produce a model of a manufacturing system from logs of the system's operation. The model produced is intended to aid in making production scheduling decisions. Production system identification is similar to machine-learning methods of process mining in that they both use logs of operations. However, process mining falls short of addressing important requirements; process mining does not (1) account for infrequent exceptional events that may provide insight into system capabilities and reliability, (2) offer means to validate the model relative to an understanding of causes, and (3) updated the model as the situation on the production floor changes. The paper describes a genetic programming (GP) methodology that uses Petri nets, probabilistic neural nets, and a causal model of production system dynamics to address these shortcomings. A coloured Petri net formalism appropriate to GP is developed and used to interpret the log. Interpreted logs provide a relation between Petri net states and exceptional system states that can be learned by means of novel formulation of probabilistic neural nets (PNNs). A generalized stochastic Petri net and the PNNs are used to validate the GP-generated solutions. The methodology is evaluated with an example based on an automotive assembly system

    Multi-paradigm modelling for cyber–physical systems: a descriptive framework

    The complexity of cyber–physical systems (CPSS) is commonly addressed through complex workflows, involving models in a plethora of different formalisms, each with their own methods, techniques, and tools. Some workflow patterns, combined with particular types of formalisms and operations on models in these formalisms, are used successfully in engineering practice. To identify and reuse them, we refer to these combinations of workflow and formalism patterns as modelling paradigms. This paper proposes a unifying (Descriptive) Framework to describe these paradigms, as well as their combinations. This work is set in the context of Multi-Paradigm Modelling (MPM), which is based on the principle to model every part and aspect of a system explicitly, at the most appropriate level(s) of abstraction, using the most appropriate modelling formalism(s) and workflows. The purpose of the Descriptive Framework presented in this paper is to serve as a basis to reason about these formalisms, workflows, and their combinations. One crucial part of the framework is the ability to capture the structural essence of a paradigm through the concept of a paradigmatic structure. This is illustrated informally by means of two example paradigms commonly used in CPS: Discrete Event Dynamic Systems and Synchronous Data Flow. The presented framework also identifies the need to establish whether a paradigm candidate follows, or qualifies as, a (given) paradigm. To illustrate the ability of the framework to support combining paradigms, the paper shows examples of both workflow and formalism combinations. The presented framework is intended as a basis for characterisation and classification of paradigms, as a starting point for a rigorous formalisation of the framework (allowing formal analyses), and as a foundation for MPM tool development
