    James Webb Space Telescope Optical Simulation Testbed I: Overview and First Results

    The James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) Optical Simulation Testbed (JOST) is a tabletop workbench to study aspects of wavefront sensing and control for a segmented space telescope, including both commissioning and maintenance activities. JOST is complementary to existing optomechanical testbeds for JWST (e.g. the Ball Aerospace Testbed Telescope, TBT) given its compact scale and flexibility, ease of use, and colocation at the JWST Science & Operations Center. We have developed an optical design that reproduces the physics of JWST's three-mirror anastigmat using three aspheric lenses; it provides similar image quality as JWST (80% Strehl ratio) over a field equivalent to a NIRCam module, but at HeNe wavelength. A segmented deformable mirror stands in for the segmented primary mirror and allows control of the 18 segments in piston, tip, and tilt, while the secondary can be controlled in tip, tilt and x, y, z position. This will be sufficient to model many commissioning activities, to investigate field dependence and multiple field point sensing & control, to evaluate alternate sensing algorithms, and develop contingency plans. Testbed data will also be usable for cross-checking of the WFS&C Software Subsystem, and for staff training and development during JWST's five- to ten-year mission.Comment: Proceedings of the SPIE, 9143-150. 13 pages, 8 figure

    Process-oriented tolerancing using the extended stream of variation model

    Current works on process-oriented tolerancing for multi-station manufacturing processes (MMPs) have been mainly focused on allocating fixture tolerances to ensure part quality specifications at a minimum manufacturing cost. Some works have also included fixture maintenance policies into the tolerance allocation problem since they are related to both manufacturing cost and final part qual- ity. However, there is a lack of incorporation of other factors that lead to increase of manufacturing cost and degrade of product quality, such as cutting-tool wear and machine-tool thermal state. The allocation of the admissible values of these process variables may be critical due to their impact on cutting-tool replacement and quality loss costs. In this paper, the process-oriented tolerancing is ex- panded based on the recently developed, extended stream of variation (SoV) model, which explicitly represents the influence of machining process variables in the variation propagation along MMPs. In addition, the probability distribution functions (pdf) for some machining process variables are ana- lyzed, and a procedure to derive part quality constraints according to GD&T specifications is also shown. With this modeling capability extension, a complete process-oriented tolerancing can be con- ducted, reaching a real minimum manufacturing cost.     Concurrent tolerance allocation and scheduling for complex assemblies

    Traditionally, tolerance allocation and scheduling have been dealt with separately in the literature. The aim of tolerance allocation is to minimize the tolerance cost. When scheduling the sequence of product operations, the goal is to minimize the makespan, mean flow time, machine idle time, and machine idle time cost. Calculations of manufacturing costs derived separately using tolerance allocation and scheduling separately will not be accurate. Hence, in this work, component tolerance was allocated by minimizing both the manufacturing cost (sum of the tolerance and quality loss cost) and the machine idle time cost, considering the product sequence. A genetic algorithm (GA) was developed for allocating the tolerance of the components and determining the best product sequence of the scheduling. To illustrate the effectiveness of the proposed method, the results are compared with those obtained with existing wheel mounting assembly discussed in the literature

    Design Space Exploration for MPSoC Architectures

    Multiprocessor system-on-chip (MPSoC) designs utilize the available technology and communication architectures to meet the requirements of the upcoming applications. In MPSoC, the communication platform is both the key enabler, as well as the key differentiator for realizing efficient MPSoCs. It provides product differentiation to meet a diverse, multi-dimensional set of design constraints, including performance, power, energy, reconfigurability, scalability, cost, reliability and time-to-market. The communication resources of a single interconnection platform cannot be fully utilized by all kind of applications, such as the availability of higher communication bandwidth for computation but not data intensive applications is often unfeasible in the practical implementation. This thesis aims to perform the architecture-level design space exploration towards efficient and scalable resource utilization for MPSoC communication architecture. In order to meet the performance requirements within the design constraints, careful selection of MPSoC communication platform, resource aware partitioning and mapping of the application play important role. To enhance the utilization of communication resources, variety of techniques such as resource sharing, multicast to avoid re-transmission of identical data, and adaptive routing can be used. For implementation, these techniques should be customized according to the platform architecture. To address the resource utilization of MPSoC communication platforms, variety of architectures with different design parameters and performance levels, namely Segmented bus (SegBus), Network-on-Chip (NoC) and Three-Dimensional NoC (3D-NoC), are selected. Average packet latency and power consumption are the evaluation parameters for the proposed techniques. In conventional computing architectures, fault on a component makes the connected fault-free components inoperative. Resource sharing approach can utilize the fault-free components to retain the system performance by reducing the impact of faults. Design space exploration also guides to narrow down the selection of MPSoC architecture, which can meet the performance requirements with design constraints.Siirretty Doriast

    Vibration of rotating machinery caused by mass imbalance is the most frequent source of unwanted disturbing forces and also the most preventable. In the case of a CT scanner, unwanted vibration in the equipment causes artifacts to the X-ray image, and therefore all measures are taken to eliminate imbalance. The CT scanner is a multi-component rotating body, therefore making it a challenge to account for many discrete components, each with unique variation. This research developed the equations for static and dynamic balance including considerations for inertia. The variation of the components was studied using two models: a sensitivity analysis and a statistical approach. A method was developed to allocate tolerances for mass and center of gravity to the discrete components in order to produce a system capable of being balanced yet manufacturable

    Computer architecture for efficient algorithmic executions in real-time systems: New technology for avionics systems and advanced space vehicles

    Improvements and advances in the development of computer architecture now provide innovative technology for the recasting of traditional sequential solutions into high-performance, low-cost, parallel system to increase system performance. Research conducted in development of specialized computer architecture for the algorithmic execution of an avionics system, guidance and control problem in real time is described. A comprehensive treatment of both the hardware and software structures of a customized computer which performs real-time computation of guidance commands with updated estimates of target motion and time-to-go is presented. An optimal, real-time allocation algorithm was developed which maps the algorithmic tasks onto the processing elements. This allocation is based on the critical path analysis. The final stage is the design and development of the hardware structures suitable for the efficient execution of the allocated task graph. The processing element is designed for rapid execution of the allocated tasks. Fault tolerance is a key feature of the overall architecture. Parallel numerical integration techniques, tasks definitions, and allocation algorithms are discussed. The parallel implementation is analytically verified and the experimental results are presented. The design of the data-driven computer architecture, customized for the execution of the particular algorithm, is discussed

    The ARIEL Instrument Control Unit design for the M4 Mission Selection Review of the ESA's Cosmic Vision Program

    The Atmospheric Remote-sensing Infrared Exoplanet Large-survey mission (ARIEL) is one of the three present candidates for the ESA M4 (the fourth medium mission) launch opportunity. The proposed Payload will perform a large unbiased spectroscopic survey from space concerning the nature of exoplanets atmospheres and their interiors to determine the key factors affecting the formation and evolution of planetary systems. ARIEL will observe a large number (>500) of warm and hot transiting gas giants, Neptunes and super-Earths around a wide range of host star types, targeting planets hotter than 600 K to take advantage of their well-mixed atmospheres. It will exploit primary and secondary transits spectroscopy in the 1.2-8 um spectral range and broad-band photometry in the optical and Near IR (NIR). The main instrument of the ARIEL Payload is the IR Spectrometer (AIRS) providing low-resolution spectroscopy in two IR channels: Channel 0 (CH0) for the 1.95-3.90 um band and Channel 1 (CH1) for the 3.90-7.80 um range. It is located at the intermediate focal plane of the telescope and common optical system and it hosts two IR sensors and two cold front-end electronics (CFEE) for detectors readout, a well defined process calibrated for the selected target brightness and driven by the Payload's Instrument Control Unit (ICU).Comment: Experimental Astronomy, Special Issue on ARIEL, (2017

    Microassembly technology for modular, polymer microfluidic devices

    Assembly of modular, polymer microfluidic devices with different functions to obtain more capable instruments may significantly expand the options available for detection and diagnosis of disease through DNA analysis and proteomics. For connecting modular devices, precise, passive alignment structures can be used to prevent infinitesimal motions between the devices and minimize misalignment. The motion and constraint of passive alignment structures were analyzed using screw theory. A combination of three v-groove and hemisphere-tipped post joints constrained all degrees of freedom of the two mating modules without overconstraint. Simulations and experiments were performed to assess the predictability of dimensional and location variations of injection molded components. A center-gated disk with micro scale assembly features was replicated. Simulations using a commercial package (Moldflow) overestimated replication fidelity. Mold surface temperatures and injection speeds significantly affected the experimental replication fidelity. The location of features for better replication, at each mold surface temperature, moved from the edge of the mold cavity to the injection point as the mold surface temperature increased from 100˚C to 150˚C. Prototype modular devices were replicated using double-sided injection molding for the experimental demonstration. Dimensional and location variations of the assembly features and alignment standards were quantified for an assembly tolerance analysis. Monte Carlo methods were applied to the assembly tolerance analysis to simulate propagation and accumulation of variation in the assembly. In simulations, mean mismatches with standard deviations ranged from 115±29 to 118±30 µm and from 17±11 to 19±13 µm along the X- and Y-axes, respectively. Vertical gaps with standard deviations at the X- and Y-axes were 312±37~319±37 µm, compared to the designed value of 287µm. The measured lateral mismatches were 103±7~116±11 µm and 15±9~20±6 µm along the X- and Y-axes, respectively. The vertical gaps ranged from 277±4 µm to 321±7 µm at the X- and Y-axes, respectively. The present study combined an investigation of microassembly technology with a better understanding of the micro injection molding process, to assist in realizing cost-effective mass production of modular, polymer microfluidic devices enabling biochemical analysis

    Artaic used a slow, expensive and error-prone system to assemble custom tile mosaics. The flaws in the original mosaic assembly system were inherent to the design and no reasonable upgrade would have substantial improvement in performance. This project aimed at developing a fast and accurate robotic mosaic assembly system solution, the TileJet, for the assembly of tile mosaics used in the residential and commercial sectors. The novel design feature of the TileJet system is the use of an array of tile placing mechanisms to assemble mosaics. Having an array of tile placing modules provides for parallel tile placement which significantly enhances mosaic assembly time. The modularity of the TileJet allows Artaic to expand and complete the system as per their requirements
