    ℒ2-Gain of double integrators with saturation nonlinearity

    This note uses quadratic surface Lyapunov functions (SuLFs) to efficiently check if a double integrator in feedback with a saturation nonlinearity has ℒ2-gain less than γ > 0. We show that for many such systems, the ℒ2-gain is nonconservative in the sense that this is approximately equal to the lower bound obtained by replacing the saturation with a constant gain of 1. These results allow the use of classical analysis tools like µ-analysis or integral quadratic constraints to analyze systems with double integrators and saturations, including servo systems like some mechanical systems, satellites, hard disks, compact disk players, etc

    1-Bit processing based model predictive control for fractionated satellite missions

    In this thesis, a 1-bit processing based Model Predictive Control (OBMPC) structure is proposed for a fractionated satellite attitude control mission. Despite the appealing advantages of the MPC algorithm towards constrained MIMO control applications, implementing the MPC algorithm onboard a small satellite is certainly challenging due to the limited onboard resources. The proposed design is based on the 1-bit processing concept, which takes advantage of the affine relation between the 1-bit state feedback and multi-bit parameters to implement a multiplier free MPC controller. As multipliers are the major power consumer in online optimization, the OBMPC structure is proven to be more efficient in comparison to the conventional MPC implementation in term of power and circuit complexity. The system is in digital control nature, affected by quantization noise introduced by Δ∑ modulators. The stability issues and practical design criteria are also discussed in this work. Some other aspects are considered in this work to complete the control system. Firstly, the implementation of the OBMPC system relies on the 1-bit state feedbacks. Hence, 1-bit sensing components are needed to implement the OBMPC system. While the ∆∑ modulator based Microelectromechanical systems (MEMS) gyroscope is considered in this work, it is possible to implement this concept into other sensing components. Secondly, as the proposed attitude mission is based on the wireless inter-satellite link (ISL), a state estimator is required. However, conventional state estimators will once again introduce multi-bit signals, and compromise the simple, direct implementation of the OBMPC controller. Therefore, the 1-bit state estimator is also designed in this work to satisfy the requirements of the proposed fractionated attitude control mission. The simulation for the OBMPC is based on a 2U CubeSat model in a fractionated satellite structure, in which the payload and actuators are separated from the controller and controlled via the ISL. Matlab simulations and FPGA implementation based performance analysis shows that the OBMPC is feasible for fractionated satellite missions and is advantageous over the conventional MPC controllers

    An Overview of Recent Progress in the Study of Distributed Multi-agent Coordination

    This article reviews some main results and progress in distributed multi-agent coordination, focusing on papers published in major control systems and robotics journals since 2006. Distributed coordination of multiple vehicles, including unmanned aerial vehicles, unmanned ground vehicles and unmanned underwater vehicles, has been a very active research subject studied extensively by the systems and control community. The recent results in this area are categorized into several directions, such as consensus, formation control, optimization, task assignment, and estimation. After the review, a short discussion section is included to summarize the existing research and to propose several promising research directions along with some open problems that are deemed important for further investigations

    On the Cosimulation of Multibody Systems and Hydraulic Dynamics

    [Abstract] The simulation of mechanical devices using multibody system dynamics (MBS) algorithms frequently requires the consideration of their interaction with components of a different physical nature, such as electronics, hydraulics, or thermodynamics. An increasingly popular way to perform this task is through co-simulation, that is, assigning a tailored formulation and solver to each subsystem in the application under study and then coupling their integration processes via the discrete-time exchange of coupling variables during runtime. Co-simulation makes it possible to deal with complex engineering applications in a modular and effective way. On the other hand, subsystem coupling can be carried out in a wide variety of ways, which brings about the need to select appropriate coupling schemes and simulation options to ensure that the numerical integration remains stable and accurate. In this work, the co-simulation of hydraulically actuated mechanical systems via noniterative, Jacobi-scheme co-simulation is addressed. The effect of selecting different co-simulation configuration options and parameters on the accuracy and stability of the numerical integration was assessed by means of representative numerical examples.Ministerio de Economía; RYC-2016-2022

    Delay-Based Controller Design for Continuous-Time and Hybrid Applications

    Motivated by the availability of different types of delays in embedded systems and biological circuits, the objective of this work is to study the benefits that delay can provide in simplifying the implementation of controllers for continuous-time systems. Given a continuous-time linear time-invariant (LTI) controller, we propose three methods to approximate this controller arbitrarily precisely by a simple controller composed of delay blocks, a few integrators and possibly a unity feedback. Different problems associated with the approximation procedures, such as finding the optimal number of delay blocks or studying the robustness of the designed controller with respect to delay values, are then investigated. We also study the design of an LTI continuous-time controller satisfying given control objectives whose delay-based implementation needs the least number of delay blocks. A direct application of this work is in the sampled-data control of a real-time embedded system, where the sampling frequency is relatively high and/or the output of the system is sampled irregularly. Based on our results on delay-based controller design, we propose a digital-control scheme that can implement every continuous-time stabilizing (LTI) controller. Unlike a typical sampled-data controller, the hybrid controller introduced here -— consisting of an ideal sampler, a digital controller, a number of modified second-order holds and possibly a unity feedback -— is robust to sampling jitter and can operate at arbitrarily high sampling frequencies without requiring expensive, high-precision computation

    Indirect neural-enhanced integral sliding mode control for finite-time fault-tolerant attitude tracking of spacecraft

    In this article, a neural integral sliding mode control strategy is presented for the finite-time fault-tolerant attitude tracking of rigid spacecraft subject to unknown inertia and disturbances. First, an integral sliding mode controller was developed by originally constructing a novel integral sliding mode surface to avoid the singularity problem. Then, the neural network (NN) was embedded into the integral sliding mode controller to compensate the lumped uncertainty and replace the robust switching term. In this way, the chattering phenomenon was significantly suppressed. Particularly, the mechanism of indirect neural approximation was introduced through inequality relaxation. Benefiting from this design, only a single learning parameter was required to be adjusted online, and the computation burden of the proposed controller was extremely reduced. The stability argument showed that the proposed controller could guarantee that the attitude and angular velocity tracking errors were regulated to the minor residual sets around zero in a finite time. It was noteworthy that the proposed controller was not only strongly robust against unknown inertia and disturbances, but also highly insensitive to actuator faults. Finally, the effectiveness and advantages of the proposed control strategy were validated using simulations and comparisons
