Contextual Media Retrieval Using Natural Language Queries
The widespread integration of cameras in hand-held and head-worn devices as
well as the ability to share content online enables a large and diverse visual
capture of the world that millions of users build up collectively every day. We
envision these images as well as associated meta information, such as GPS
coordinates and timestamps, to form a collective visual memory that can be
queried while automatically taking the ever-changing context of mobile users
into account. As a first step towards this vision, in this work we present
Xplore-M-Ego: a novel media retrieval system that allows users to query a
dynamic database of images and videos using spatio-temporal natural language
queries. We evaluate our system using a new dataset of real user queries as
well as through a usability study. One key finding is that there is a
considerable amount of inter-user variability, for example in the resolution of
spatial relations in natural language utterances. We show that our retrieval
system can cope with this variability using personalisation through an online

Knowledge Graphs Evolution and Preservation -- A Technical Report from ISWS 2019
One of the grand challenges discussed during the Dagstuhl Seminar "Knowledge
Graphs: New Directions for Knowledge Representation on the Semantic Web" and
described in its report is that of a: "Public FAIR Knowledge Graph of
Everything: We increasingly see the creation of knowledge graphs that capture
information about the entirety of a class of entities. [...] This grand
challenge extends this further by asking if we can create a knowledge graph of
"everything" ranging from common sense concepts to location based entities.
This knowledge graph should be "open to the public" in a FAIR manner
democratizing this mass amount of knowledge." Although linked open data (LOD)
is one knowledge graph, it is the closest realisation (and probably the only
one) to a public FAIR Knowledge Graph (KG) of everything. Surely, LOD provides
a unique testbed for experimenting and evaluating research hypotheses on open
and FAIR KG. One of the most neglected FAIR issues about KGs is their ongoing
evolution and long term preservation. We want to investigate this problem, that
is to understand what preserving and supporting the evolution of KGs means and
how these problems can be addressed. Clearly, the problem can be approached
from different perspectives and may require the development of different
approaches, including new theories, ontologies, metrics, strategies,
procedures, etc. This document reports a collaborative effort performed by 9
teams of students, each guided by a senior researcher as their mentor,
attending the International Semantic Web Research School (ISWS 2019). Each team
provides a different perspective to the problem of knowledge graph evolution
substantiated by a set of research questions as the main subject of their
investigation. In addition, they provide their working definition for KG
preservation and evolution

Dagstuhl Seminar 04441 ``Mobile Information Management\u27\u27 was held
in the International Conference and Research Center (IBFI),
Schloss Dagstuhl.
During the seminar, several participants presented their current
research, and ongoing work and open problems were discussed. Abstracts of
the presentations given during the seminar as well as abstracts of
seminar results and ideas are put together in this paper. The first section
describes the seminar topics and goals in general.

Structuring visual exploratory analysis of skill demand
The analysis of increasingly large and diverse data for meaningful interpretation and question answering is handicapped by human cognitive limitations. Consequently, semi-automatic abstraction of complex data within structured information spaces becomes increasingly important, if its knowledge content is to support intuitive, exploratory discovery. Exploration of skill demand is an area where regularly updated, multi-dimensional data may be exploited to assess capability within the workforce to manage the demands of the modern, technology- and data-driven economy. The knowledge derived may be employed by skilled practitioners in defining career pathways, to identify where, when and how to update their skillsets in line with advancing technology and changing work demands. This same knowledge may also be used to identify the combination of skills essential in recruiting for new roles. To address the challenges inherent in exploring the complex, heterogeneous, dynamic data that feeds into such applications, we investigate the use of an ontology to guide structuring of the information space, to allow individuals and institutions to interactively explore and interpret the dynamic skill demand landscape for their specific needs. As a test case we consider the relatively new and highly dynamic field of Data Science, where insightful, exploratory data analysis and knowledge discovery are critical. We employ context-driven and task-centred scenarios to explore our research questions and guide iterative design, development and formative evaluation of our ontology-driven, visual exploratory discovery and analysis approach, to measure where it adds value to users’ analytical activity. Our findings reinforce the potential in our approach, and point us to future paths to build on
Dynamically Personalizing Search Results for Mobile Users
International audienceWe introduce a novel situation-aware approach to personalize search results for mobile users. By providing a mobile user with appropriate information that dynamically satisfies his interests according to his situation, we tackle the problem of information overload. To build situation-aware user profile we rely on evidence issued from retrieval situations. A retrieval situation refers to the spatio-temporal context of the user when submitting a query to the search engine. A situation is represented as a combination of geographical and temporal concepts inferred from concrete time and location information by some ontological knowledge. User's interests are inferred from past search activities related to the identified situations. They are represented using concepts issued from a thematic ontology. We also involve a method to maintain the user's interests over his ongoing search activity and to personalize the search results
Alterations within the Coastal Urban Environments: Case of the Coastal Squares of Istanbul Megacity
Two-thirds of the megacities of the world are standing on the coastal areas. Today, coastal megacities are under the impact of varying factors like human-induced changes such as urbanization and mega projects and the natural ones as global climate change and natural disasters. Many European coastal cities are examining the impacts of the sea level change due to the global climate change. Regarding its long history, interplay with the sea and the drastic population, Istanbul captures a significant place both in Turkey and in the world. It is standing as a city, which is phase by phase losing its interaction with the sea due to the mega projects generated within the last decades. Although their limited number; public squares and parks attached with the promenades are the only openings to the sea and they contribute maintaining the continuity and sustainability of coastal identity. This chapter handles five significant historical squares and interrogates their interplay with the natural and physical challenges of the twenty-first century. Regarding this aim, case areas are evaluated by parameters of morphological attributes, formation of squares, qualification of the surfaces and coastal-based natural disaster impacts such as sea level rise and tsunami through literature-based studies and spatio-temporal diagrammatic maps
Identifying and understanding road-constrained areas of interest (AOIs) through spatiotemporal taxi GPS data: A case study in New York City
Urban areas of interest (AOIs) represent areas within the urban environment featuring high levels of public interaction, with their understanding holding utility for a wide range of urban planning applications.
Within this context, our study proposes a novel space-time analytical framework and implements it to the taxi GPS data for the extent of Manhattan, NYC to identify and describe 31 road-constrained AOIs in terms of their spatiotemporal distribution and contextual characteristics. Our analysis captures many important locations, including but not limited to primary transit hubs, famous cultural venues, open spaces, and some other tourist attractions, prominent landmarks, and commercial centres. Moreover, we respectively analyse these AOIs in terms of their dynamics and contexts by performing further clustering analysis, formulating five temporal clusters delineating the dynamic evolution of the AOIs and four contextual clusters representing their salient contextual characteristics
