Renewable Energy Resource Assessment and Forecasting
In recent years, several projects and studies have been launched towards the development and use of new methodologies, in order to assess, monitor, and support clean forms of energy. Accurate estimation of the available energy potential is of primary importance, but is not always easy to achieve. The present Special Issue on ‘Renewable Energy Resource Assessment and Forecasting’ aims to provide a holistic approach to the above issues, by presenting multidisciplinary methodologies and tools that are able to support research projects and meet today’s technical, socio-economic, and decision-making needs. In particular, research papers, reviews, and case studies on the following subjects are presented: wind, wave and solar energy; biofuels; resource assessment of combined renewable energy forms; numerical models for renewable energy forecasting; integrated forecasted systems; energy for buildings; sustainable development; resource analysis tools and statistical models; extreme value analysis and forecasting for renewable energy resources
Atmospheric Air Pollution and Monitoring
Indoor air quality (IAQ) is an important aspect in building design due to its effect on human health and wellbeing. Generally, people spend about 90% of their time indoors where they are exposed to chemicals, particulate matters, biological contaminants and possibly carcinogens. In particular, the air quality at hospitals carries with it risks for serious health consequences for medical staff as well as patients and visitors. This book is a study of atmospheric air pollution and presents ways we can reduce its impacts on human health. It discusses tools for measuring IAQ as well as analyzes IAQ in closed buildings. It is an important documentation of air quality and its impact on human health
Climate Change Impacts on Agriculture in Europe
COST Action 734 was launched thanks to the coordinated activity of 29 EU countries. The main objective of the Action was the evaluation of impacts from climate change and variability on agriculture for various European areas. Secondary objectives were: collection and review of existing agroclimatic indices and simulation models, to assess hazard impacts on European agricultural areas; to apply climate scenarios for the next few decades; the definition of harmonised criteria to evaluate the impacts of climate change and variability on agriculture; the definition of warning systems guidelines. Based on the result, possible actions (specific recommendations, suggestions, warning systems) were elaborated and proposed to the end-users, depending on their needs
Towards the Chalonge 16th Paris Cosmology Colloquium 2012: Highlights and Conclusions of the Chalonge 15th Paris Cosmology Colloquium 2011
The Chalonge 15th Paris Cosmology Colloquium 2011 was held on 20-22 July in
the historic Paris Observatory's Perrault building, in the Chalonge School
spirit combining real cosmological/astrophysical data and hard theory
predictive approach connected to them in the Warm Dark Matter Standard Model of
the Universe: News and reviews from Herschel, QUIET, Atacama Cosmology
Telescope (ACT), South Pole Telescole (SPT), Planck, PIXIE, the JWST, UFFO,
KATRIN and MARE experiments; astrophysics, particle and nuclear physics warm
dark matter (DM) searches and galactic observations, related theory and
simulations, with the aim of synthesis, progress and clarification. Philippe
Andre, Peter Biermann, Pasquale Blasi, Daniel Boyanovsky, Carlo Burigana,
Hector de Vega, Joanna Dunkley, Gerry Gilmore, Alexander Kashlinsky, Alan
Kogut, Anthony Lasenby, John Mather, Norma Sanchez, Alexei Smirnov, Sylvaine
Turck-Chieze present here their highlights of the Colloquium. Ayuki Kamada and
Sinziana Paduroiu present here their poster highlights. LambdaWDM (Warm Dark
Matter) is progressing impressively over LambdaCDM whose galactic scale crisis
and decline are staggering. The International School Daniel Chalonge issued an
statement of strong support to the James Webb Space Telescope (JSWT). The
Daniel Chalonge Medal 2011 was awarded to John C. Mather, Science PI of the
JWST. Summary and conclusions are presented by H. J. de Vega, M. C. Falvella
and N. G. Sanchez. Overall, LambdaWDM and keV scale DM particles deserve
dedicated astronomical and laboratory experimental searches, theoretical work
and simulations. KATRIN experiment in the future could perhaps adapt its set-up
to look to keV scale sterile neutrinos. It will be a a fantastic discovery to
detect dark matter in a beta decay. Photos of the Colloquium are included.
