    New Pathways in Coevolutionary Computation

    The simultaneous evolution of two or more species with coupled fitness -- coevolution -- has been put to good use in the field of evolutionary computation. Herein, we present two new forms of coevolutionary algorithms, which we have recently designed and applied with success. OMNIREP is a cooperative coevolutionary algorithm that discovers both a representation and an encoding for solving a particular problem of interest.     Treasure hunt : a framework for cooperative, distributed parallel optimization

Com o objetivo de obter uma convergência conjunta entre os nós, este framework propõe um mecanismo de direcionamento que controla suavemente a cooperação entre múltiplas instâncias independentes do Treasure Hunt. A topologia em árvore proposta pelo Treasure Hunt garante a rápida propagação da informação pelos nós, ao mesmo tempo em que provê simutaneamente explorações (pelos nós-pai) e intensificações (pelos nós-filho), em vários níveis de granularidade, independentemente do número de nós na árvore. O Treasure Hunt tem boa tolerância à falhas e está parcialmente preparado para uma total tolerância à falhas. Como parte dos métodos desenvolvidos durante este trabalho, um método automatizado de Particionamento Iterativo foi proposto para controlar o balanceamento entre explorações e intensificações ao longo da busca. Uma Modelagem de Estabilização de Convergência para operar em modo Online também foi proposto, com o objetivo de encontrar pontos de parada com bom custo/benefício para os algoritmos de otimização que executam dentro das instâncias do Treasure Hunt. Experimentos em benchmarks clássicos, aleatórios e de competição, de vários tamanhos e complexidades, usando os algoritmos de busca PSO, DE e CCPSO2, mostram que o Treasure Hunt melhora as características inerentes destes algoritmos de busca. O Treasure Hunt faz com que os algoritmos de baixa performance se tornem comparáveis aos de boa performance, e os algoritmos de boa performance possam estender seus limites até problemas maiores. Experimentos distribuindo instâncias do Treasure Hunt, em uma rede cooperativa de até 160 processos, demonstram a escalabilidade robusta do framework, apresentando melhoras nos resultados mesmo quando o tempo de processamento é fixado (wall-clock) para todas as instâncias distribuídas do Treasure Hunt. Resultados demonstram que o mecanismo de amostragem fornecido pelo Treasure Hunt, aliado à maior cooperação entre as múltiplas populações em evolução, reduzem a necessidade de grandes populações e de algoritmos de busca complexos. Alta dimensionalidade.Abstract: This work proposes a multilevel framework called Treasure Hunt, which is capable of distributing independent search algorithms to a large number of processing nodes. Aiming to obtain joint convergences between working nodes, Treasure Hunt proposes a driving mechanism that smoothly controls the cooperation between the multiple independent Treasure Hunt instances. The tree topology proposed by Treasure Hunt ensures quick propagation of information, while providing simultaneous explorations (by parents) and exploitations (by children), on several levels of granularity, regardless the number of nodes in the tree. Treasure Hunt has good fault tolerance and is partially prepared to full fault tolerance. As part of the methods developed during this work, an automated Iterative Partitioning method is proposed to control the balance between exploration and exploitation as the search progress. A Convergence Stabilization Modeling to operate in Online mode is also proposed, aiming to find good cost/benefit stopping points for the optimization algorithms running within the Treasure Hunt instances. Experiments on classic, random and competition benchmarks of various sizes and complexities, using the search algorithms PSO, DE and CCPSO2, show that Treasure Hunt boosts the inherent characteristics of these search algorithms. Treasure Hunt makes algorithms with poor performances to become comparable to good ones, and algorithms with good performances to be capable of extending their limits to larger problems. Experiments distributing Treasure Hunt instances in a cooperative network up to 160 processes show the robust scaling of the framework, presenting improved results even when fixing a wall-clock time for the instances. Results show that the sampling mechanism provided by Treasure Hunt, allied to the increased cooperation between multiple evolving populations, reduce the need for large population sizes and complex search algorithms.     Robustness - a challenge also for the 21st century: A review of robustness phenomena in technical, biological and social systems as well as robust approaches in engineering, computer science, operations research and decision aiding

    Notions on robustness exist in many facets. They come from different disciplines and reflect different worldviews. Consequently, they contradict each other very often, which makes the term less applicable in a general context. Robustness approaches are often limited to specific problems for which they have been developed. This means, notions and definitions might reveal to be wrong if put into another domain of validity, i.e. context. A definition might be correct in a specific context but need not hold in another. Therefore, in order to be able to speak of robustness we need to specify the domain of validity, i.e. system, property and uncertainty of interest. As proofed by Ho et al. in an optimization context with finite and discrete domains, without prior knowledge about the problem there exists no solution what so ever which is more robust than any other. Similar to the results of the No Free Lunch Theorems of Optimization (NLFTs) we have to exploit the problem structure in order to make a solution more robust. This optimization problem is directly linked to a robustness/fragility tradeoff which has been observed in many contexts, e.g. 'robust, yet fragile' property of HOT (Highly Optimized Tolerance) systems. Another issue is that robustness is tightly bounded to other phenomena like complexity for which themselves exist no clear definition or theoretical framework. Consequently, this review rather tries to find common aspects within many different approaches and phenomena than to build a general theorem for robustness, which anyhow might not exist because complex phenomena often need to be described from a pluralistic view to address as many aspects of a phenomenon as possible. First, many different robustness problems have been reviewed from many different disciplines. Second, different common aspects will be discussed, in particular the relationship of functional and structural properties. This paper argues that robustness phenomena are also a challenge for the 21st century. It is a useful quality of a model or system in terms of the 'maintenance of some desired system characteristics despite fluctuations in the behaviour of its component parts or its environment' (s. [Carlson and Doyle, 2002], p. 2). We define robustness phenomena as solution with balanced tradeoffs and robust design principles and robustness measures as means to balance tradeoffs. --

    An exploration of evolutionary computation applied to frequency modulation audio synthesis parameter optimisation

    With the ever-increasing complexity of sound synthesisers, there is a growing demand for automated parameter estimation and sound space navigation techniques. This thesis explores the potential for evolutionary computation to automatically map known sound qualities onto the parameters of frequency modulation synthesis. Within this exploration are original contributions in the domain of synthesis parameter estimation and, within the developed system, evolutionary computation, in the form of the evolutionary algorithms that drive the underlying optimisation process. Based upon the requirement for the parameter estimation system to deliver multiple search space solutions, existing evolutionary algorithmic architectures are augmented to enable niching, while maintaining the strengths of the original algorithms. Two novel evolutionary algorithms are proposed in which cluster analysis is used to identify and maintain species within the evolving populations. A conventional evolution strategy and cooperative coevolution strategy are defined, with cluster-orientated operators that enable the simultaneous optimisation of multiple search space solutions at distinct optima. A test methodology is developed that enables components of the synthesis matching problem to be identified and isolated, enabling the performance of different optimisation techniques to be compared quantitatively. A system is consequently developed that evolves sound matches using conventional frequency modulation synthesis models, and the effectiveness of different evolutionary algorithms is assessed and compared in application to both static and timevarying sound matching problems. Performance of the system is then evaluated by interview with expert listeners. The thesis is closed with a reflection on the algorithms and systems which have been developed, discussing possibilities for the future of automated synthesis parameter estimation techniques, and how they might be employed

    A Parallel Cooperative Coevolutionary SMPSO Algorithm for Multi-objective Optimization

    We present a parallel multi-objective cooperative coevolutionary variant of the Speed-constrained Multi-objective Particle Swarm Optimization (SMPSO) algorithm. The algorithm, called CCSMPSO, is the first multi-objective cooperative coevolutionary algorithm based on PSO in the literature. SMPSO adopts a strategy for limiting the velocity of the particles that prevents them from having erratic movements. This characteristic provides the algorithm with a high degree of reliability. In order to demonstrate the effectiveness of CCSMPSO, we compare our work with the original SMPSO and three different state-of-the-art multi-objective CC metaheuristics, namely CCNSGA-II, CCSPEA2 and CCMOCell, along with their original sequential counterparts. Our experiments indicate that our proposed solution, CCSMPSO, offers significant computational speedups, a higher convergence speed and better or comparable results in terms of solution quality, when evaluated against three other CC algorithms and four state-of-the-art optimizers (namely SMPSO, NSGA-II, SPEA2, and MOCell), respectively. We then provide a scalability analysis, which consists of two studies. First, we analyze how the algorithms scale when varying the problem size, i.e., the number of variables. Second, we analyze their scalability in terms of parallelization, i.e., the impact of using more computational cores on the quality of solutions and on the execution time of the algorithms. Three different criteria are used for making the comparisons, namely the quality of the resulting approximation sets, average computational time and the convergence speed to the Pareto front

    EpiTESTER: Testing Autonomous Vehicles with Epigenetic Algorithm and Attention Mechanism

    Testing autonomous vehicles (AVs) under various environmental scenarios that lead the vehicles to unsafe situations is known to be challenging. Given the infinite possible environmental scenarios, it is essential to find critical scenarios efficiently. To this end, we propose a novel testing method, named EpiTESTER, by taking inspiration from epigenetics, which enables species to adapt to sudden environmental changes. In particular, EpiTESTER adopts gene silencing as its epigenetic mechanism, which regulates gene expression to prevent the expression of a certain gene, and the probability of gene expression is dynamically computed as the environment changes. Given different data modalities (e.g., images, lidar point clouds) in the context of AV, EpiTESTER benefits from a multi-model fusion transformer to extract high-level feature representations from environmental factors and then calculates probabilities based on these features with the attention mechanism. To assess the cost-effectiveness of EpiTESTER, we compare it with a classical genetic algorithm (GA) (i.e., without any epigenetic mechanism implemented) and EpiTESTER with equal probability for each gene. We evaluate EpiTESTER with four initial environments from CARLA, an open-source simulator for autonomous driving research, and an end-to-end AV controller, Interfuser. Our results show that EpiTESTER achieved a promising performance in identifying critical scenarios compared to the baselines, showing that applying epigenetic mechanisms is a good option for solving practical problems.Comment: 17 pages, 8 figures, 2 table

    Coevolutionary Approaches to Generating Robust Build-Orders for Real-Time Strategy Games

    We aim to find winning build-orders for Real-Time Strategy games. Real-Time Strategy games provide a variety of challenges, from short-term control to longer term planning. We focus on a longer-term planning problem; which units to build and in what order to produce the units so a player successfully defeats the opponent. Plans which address unit construction scheduling problems in Real-Time Strategy games are called build-orders. A robust build-order defeats many opponents, while a strong build-order defeats opponents quickly. However, no single build-order defeats all other build-orders, and build-orders that defeat many opponents may still lose against a specific opponent. Other researchers have only investigated generating build-orders that defeat a specific opponent, rather than finding robust, strong build-orders. Additionally, previous research has not applied coevolutionary algorithms towards generating build-orders. In contrast, our research has three main contributions towards finding robust, strong build-orders. First, we apply a coevolutionary algorithm towards finding robust build-orders. Compared to exhaustive search, a genetic algorithm finds the strongest build-orders while a coevolutionary algorithm finds more robust build-orders. Second, we show that case-injection enables coevolution to learn from specific opponents while maintaining robustness. Build-orders produced with coevolution and case-injection learn to defeat or play like the injected build-orders. Third, we show that coevolved build-orders benefit from a representation which includes branches and loops. Coevolution will utilize multiple branches and loops to create build-orders that are stronger than build-orders without loops and branches. We believe this work provides evidence that coevolutionary algorithms may be a viable approach to creating robust, strong build-orders for Real-Time Strategy games
