    Adaptation and Learning for Manipulators and Machining

    This thesis presents methods for improving the accuracy and efficiency of tasks performed using different kinds of industrial manipulators, with a focus on the application of machining. Industrial robots offer a flexible and cost-efficient alternative to machine tools for machining, but cannot achieve as high accuracy out of the box. This is mainly caused by non-ideal properties in the robot joints such as backlash and compliance, in combination with the strong process forces that affect the robot during machining operations. In this thesis, three different approaches to improving the robotic machining accuracy are presented. First, a macro/micro-manipulator approach is considered, where an external compensation mechanism is used in combination with the robot, for compensation of high-frequency Cartesian errors. Two different milling scenarios are evaluated, where a significant increase in accuracy was obtained. The accuracy specification of 50 ÎĽm was reached for both scenarios. Because of the limited workspace and the higher bandwidth of the compensation mechanism compared to the robot, two different mid-ranging approaches for control of the relative position between the robot and the compensator are developed and evaluated. Second, modeling and identification of robot joints is considered. The proposed method relies on clamping the manipulator end effector and actuating the joints, while measuring joint motor torque and motor position. The joint stiffness and backlash can subsequently be extracted from the measurements, to be used for compensation of the deflections that occur during machining. Third, a model-based iterative learning control (ILC) approach is proposed, where feedback is provided from three different sensors of varying investment costs. Using position measurements from an optical tracking system, an error decrease of up to 84 % was obtained. Measurements of end-effector forces yielded an error decrease of 55 %, and a force-estimation method based on joint motor torques decreased the error by 38 %. Further investigation of ILC methods is considered for a different kind of manipulator, a marine vibrator, for the application of marine seismic acquisition. A frequency-domain ILC strategy is proposed, in order to attenuate undesired overtones and improve the tracking accuracy. The harmonics were suppressed after approximately 20 iterations of the ILC algorithm, and the absolute tracking error was r educed by a factor of approximately 50. The final problem considered in this thesis concerns increasing the efficiency of machining tasks, by minimizing cycle times. A force-control approach is proposed to maximize the feed rate, and a learning algorithm for path planning of the machining path is employed for the case of machining in non-isotropic materials, such as wood. The cycle time was decreased by 14 % with the use of force control, and on average an additional 28 % decrease was achieved by use of a learning algorithm. Furthermore, by means of reinforcement learning, the path-planning algorithm is refined to provide optimal solutions and to incorporate an increased number of machining directions

    Assessment of simulated and real-world autonomy performance with small-scale unmanned ground vehicles

    Off-road autonomy is a challenging topic that requires robust systems to both understand and navigate complex environments. While on-road autonomy has seen a major expansion in recent years in the consumer space, off-road systems are mostly relegated to niche applications. However, these applications can provide safety and navigation to dangerous areas that are the most suited for autonomy tasks. Traversability analysis is at the core of many of the algorithms employed in these topics. In this thesis, a Clearpath Robotics Jackal vehicle is equipped with a 3D Ouster laser scanner to define and traverse off-road environments. The Mississippi State University Autonomous Vehicle Simulator (MAVS) and the Navigating All Terrains Using Robotic Exploration (NATURE) autonomy stack are used in conjunction with the small-scale vehicle platform to traverse uneven terrain and collect data. Additionally, the NATURE stack is used as a point of comparison between a MAVS simulated and physical Clearpath Robotics Jackal vehicle in testing

    Locomotion Optimization of Photoresponsive Small-scale Robot: A Deep Reinforcement Learning Approach

    Soft robots comprise of elastic and flexible structures, and actuatable soft materials are often used to provide stimuli-responses, remotely controlled with different kinds of external stimuli, which is beneficial for designing small-scale devices. Among different stimuli-responsive materials, liquid crystal networks (LCNs) have gained a significant amount of attention for soft small-scale robots in the past decade being stimulated and actuated by light, which is clean energy, able to transduce energy remotely, easily available and accessible to sophisticated control. One of the persistent challenges in photoresponsive robotics is to produce controllable autonomous locomotion behavior. In this Thesis, different types of photoresponsive soft robots were used to realize light-powered locomotion, and an artificial intelligence-based approach was developed for controlling the movement. A robot tracking system, including an automatic laser steering function, was built for efficient robotic feature detection and steering the laser beam automatically to desired locations. Another robot prototype, a swimmer robot, driven by the automatically steered laser beam, showed directional movements including some degree of uncertainty and randomness in their locomotion behavior. A novel approach is developed to deal with the challenges related to the locomotion of photoresponsive swimmer robots. Machine learning, particularly deep reinforcement learning method, was applied to develop a control policy for autonomous locomotion behavior. This method can learn from its experiences by interacting with the robot and its environment without explicit knowledge of the robot structure, constituent material, and robotic mechanics. Due to the requirement of a large number of experiences to correlate the goodness of behavior control, a simulator was developed, which mimicked the uncertain and random movement behavior of the swimmer robots. This approach effectively adapted the random movement behaviors and developed an optimal control policy to reach different destination points autonomously within a simulated environment. This work has successfully taken a step towards the autonomous locomotion control of soft photoresponsive robots

Computational power has been improved over the last few decades; therefore, the integration of different tools such as CAD, FEM, CFD, and CAM has enabled complex modeling and manufacturing problems to be solved in a more feasible way.
