In this paper, I will offer an analogy between the Trinity and extended simples that supports a Latin approach to the Trinity. The theoretical tools developed to discuss and debate extended simples in the literature of contemporary analytic metaphysics, I argue, can help us make useful conceptual distinctions in attempts to understand what it could be for God to be Triune. As falhas Cognitivas e as estratégias de Coping em Adultos com Perturbação de Aprendizagem Específica com Défice na Leitura

A Perturbação de Aprendizagem Específica com Défice na Leitura afeta uma parte substancial da população mundial. Estudos mostram que esta perturbação não se restringe ao contexto escolar apenas, perpetuando-se ao longo da vida dos afetados. Por se tratar de uma perturbação com uma enorme possibilidade de causas, as dificuldades cognitivas causadas por esta perturbação sugerem a existência de limitações ao nível dos sistemas cognitivos, o que faz com que os sujeitos com PAE-DL apresentem um elevando número de lapsos cognitivos no seu quotidiano. Porém, estudos mostraram que os indivíduos com esta perturbação conseguem gerir e compensar as suas dificuldades através da utilização de estratégias de coping. Partindo de amostra composta por dois grupos, sujeitos com PAE-DL (N=23) e sem PAE-DL (N=23), foram avaliadas as diferenças entre em relação às falhas cognitivas e estilos de coping utilizados. Foram identificadas diferenças estatisticamente significativas ao nível de um estilo de coping, o Desinvestimento comportamental, sendo que os sujeitos com PAE-DL pontuam mais alto nesta dimensão. Ainda, os sujeitos com PAE-DL apresentaram diferenças estatisticamente significativas em todos os tipos de falhas cognitivas. Foi ainda encontrada uma correlação entre os estilos de coping desadaptativos e as falhas cognitivas no grupo experimental. Serão discutidos os motivos subjacentes a estes resultados.Specific Learning Disability with Reading Deficit affects a substantial part of the world's population. Studies show that this disturbance is not restricted to the school context alone, perpetuating itself throughout the life of the affected ones. Because it is a disorder with an enormous possibility of causes, the cognitive difficulties caused by this disorder suggest the existence of limitations in the cognitive systems, which makes the individuals with DL-PAE present an increasing number of cognitive lapses in their daily lives. However, studies have shown that individuals with this disorder manage and compensate for their difficulties using coping strategies. From a sample composed of two groups, subjects with PAE-DL (N = 23) and without PAE-DL (N = 23), the differences between the cognitive failures and coping styles were evaluated. Statistically significant differences were identified at the level of a coping style, Behavioral Disinfestation, with subjects with PAE-DL punctuating higher in this dimension. Furthermore, subjects with PAE-DL presented statistically significant differences in all types of cognitive failures. A correlation was also found between maladaptive coping styles and cognitive failures in the experimental group. The reasons behind these results will be discussed

Who benefits from reducing the cost of formality? Quantile regression discontinuity analysis

This paper studies the effects of increasing formality via tax reduction and simplification schemes on micro-firm performance. It uses the 1997 Brazilian SIMPLES program. We develop a simple theoretical model to show that SIMPLES has an impact only on a segment of the micro-firm population, for which the effect of formality on firm performance can be identified, and that can be analyzed along the single dimensional quantiles of the conditional firm revenues. To estimate the effect of formality, we use an econometric approach that compares eligible and non-eligible firms, born before and after SIMPLES in a local interval about the introduction of SIMPLES. We use an estimator that combines both quantile regression and the regression discontinuity identification strategy. The empirical results corroborate the positive effect of formality on microfirms' performance and produce a clear characterization of who benefits from these programs

Quantum Holism: Reconciling Extended Simples with Supersubstantivalism

I argue that the extended simples picture (ESP) is compatible with supersubstantivalism under the quantum holism model, and that reevaluating our limits on the ways an object may be located by fusing the two ontologies can benefit our understanding of modern physics. I first illustrate the explanatory utility of extended simples, using examples of superposition and entanglement. Second, I advocate the use of supersubstantivalism as a way to understand the interface between objects and spacetime, and argue that the ESP suitably fits into a supersubstantivalist interpretation of quantum field theory. In the last section, I propose quantum holism as a framework to reconcile supersubstantivalism with extended simples, and conclude that the causal relationship that interweaves material objects and spacetime render the two ontologies compatible. I will demonstrate that a combined ontology is useful for its parsimony, and for our understanding of quantum field theory

Maximally Contiguous Simples

Much of the recent work done in mereology has been focused on answers to Ned Markosian’s Simple Question: What are the necessary and jointly sufficient conditions for an object’s being a simple i.e. a thing with no parts? In this paper, I analyze Markosian’s own answer, The Maximally Continuous View (MaxCon), and highlight a few of the strongest objections against that answer. I then argue that the objections only arise because Markosian assumes problematic conceptions of spacetime and matter. After updating each assumption with our best physics, I arrive at my own view, which I call the Maximally Contiguous View of Simples. I show that my view accommodates the intuitions that motivated MaxCon while also avoiding the issues that plagued it. I conclude by interacting with a couple possible objections to my view
