    Baxter Q-Operators and Representations of Yangians

    We develop a new approach to Baxter Q-operators by relating them to the theory of Yangians, which are the simplest examples for quantum groups. Here we open up a new chapter in this theory and study certain degenerate solutions of the Yang-Baxter equation connected with harmonic oscillator algebras. These infinite-state solutions of the Yang-Baxter equation serve as elementary, "partonic" building blocks for other solutions via the standard fusion procedure. As a first example of the method we consider sl(n) compact spin chains and derive the full hierarchy of operatorial functional equations for all related commuting transfer matrices and Q-operators. This leads to a systematic and transparent solution of these chains, where the nested Bethe equations are derived in an entirely algebraic fashion, without any reference to the traditional Bethe ansatz techniques.Comment: 27 pages, 5 figures; v2: typos fixed, references updated and adde

    A comprehensive study of implicator-conjunctor based and noise-tolerant fuzzy rough sets: definitions, properties and robustness analysis

Both rough and fuzzy set theories offer interesting tools for dealing with imperfect data: while the former allows us to work with uncertain and incomplete information, the latter provides a formal setting for vague concepts. The two theories are highly compatible, and since the late 1980s many researchers have studied their hybridization. In this paper, we critically evaluate most relevant fuzzy rough set models proposed in the literature. To this end, we establish a formally correct and unified mathematical framework for them. Both implicator-conjunctor-based definitions and noise-tolerant models are studied. We evaluate these models on two different fronts: firstly, we discuss which properties of the original rough set model can be maintained and secondly, we examine how robust they are against both class and attribute noise.     Complexity of matrix problems

    In representation theory, the problem of classifying pairs of matrices up to simultaneous similarity is used as a measure of complexity; classification problems containing it are called wild problems. We show in an explicit form that this problem contains all classification matrix problems given by quivers or posets. Then we prove that it does not contain (but is contained in) the problem of classifying three-valent tensors. Hence, all wild classification problems given by quivers or posets have the same complexity; moreover, a solution of any one of these problems implies a solution of each of the others. The problem of classifying three-valent tensors is more complicated.Comment: 24 page
