Dissident narratives of violence in Colombia: from armed conflict to queer everyday multiconflicto

This thesis explores the intersections of everyday violence and conflict-related violence in the life course of people with non-normative gender and sexuality in Colombia from a queer feminist perspective. The research is based on 12 life story interviews with LGBTIQ+ people born and raised in conflict-affected contexts across the country. Arguing that recent historical memory reports have included the testimonies of “LGBTI victims of armed conflict” as evidence of violent occurrences and not as epistemic standpoints, I use a feminist narrative analysis to recover the political power of these voices by listening to the interviewees’ life stories as meaningful narratives about how violence works in specific contexts. Taking these dissident narratives as a point of departure, this thesis argues that the official internal armed conflict narrative and the transitional justice framework do not capture the complexity and variety of the violences that shape the everyday of LGBTIQ+ people in Colombia. These life story narratives demonstrate that the spectacular conflict-related violence is only one event in a broader violent process of subject formation that LGBTIQ+ people experience across their life trajectories. In this analysis, I focus on three narrative plots that emerged from these life stories, silence, displacement, and peace, to explore how LGBTIQ+ people’s desires, practices, and embodiments have been discursively and spatially shaped as a threat to society in the Colombian context and how interviewees negotiate and challenge this subject position on an everyday basis. This analysis builds on queer phenomenological approaches to study violence as a relational phenomenon that affects how subjectivities are embodied and bodies oriented in spatiotemporal terms. Finally, thinking of violence outside the frames of internal armed conflict and drawing on interviewees’ life story narratives, the thesis proposes the concept of intimate peace to shed light on embodied practices of peacebuilding that emerge from queer disruptions of everyday violence. Thus, this thesis unveils other possible narratives of violence, justice, and peace in Colombia

That new phase has been marked by a multiplicity of themes, styles, genres, media, techniques, materials, and especially digital dissemination. In addition to the traditional editorial illustration, illustration has spread to many other areas, from animation to theatre, installations, murals, sculpture, architecture, and so on. Such a diversity has also garnered new problematics, including illustration’s own disciplinary identity and the relationship with other artistic expressions. In that regard, illustration is the ideal example of inter-art approaches. Therefore, it is relevant to consider this “new” discipline in light of concepts such as intertextuality, intermediality and transmediality, still far from explored in the context of illustration. Furthermore, the hybridity usually associated with style justifies an approach in an inter-stylistic environment as part of its dialogical character. Hence, illustration is perceived in an open expansion both in material and subjective terms. Methodologically, this study consists on the analysis of several national and international examples, culminating in two carefully selected cases: given that there has been a paradigm shift from the twentieth to the twenty first century, with a growing number of female illustrators, this study considers extensively the works of Catarina Sobral and Ana Aragão, precisely because what distinguishes them. In the first case, Sobral’s work is closer to the world of illustration and animation; in Aragão’s case, we find a perfect example of commitment to drawing. Both represent the porousness of Portuguese contemporary illustration, largely built on a metaphoric character, but also parodic, hyperbolic, and ironic. It never hesitates to resort to hypertext, reinterpretation, remediation, and re-signification, nor to conjecture about and imagine the future, somewhere between reality and fiction.POCH – Programa Operacional Capital Humano, comparticipado pelo Fundo Social Europeu (FSE), pelo Programa Operacional Regional Centro, por fundos nacionais do MCTES e por fundos da União Europeia (UE)

Whenever States use force in their international relations, interstate assistance is a vital component. The book clarifies the regulation of interstate assistance to a use of force under international law. It comprehensively reviews the relevant practice of States in United Nations resolutions, in international treaties and in more than 25 armed conflicts - from the Korean War to the current Ukraine war. It situates the regulation within the historic development of the ius contra bellum and contextualizes it with general rules of international law on complicity. Thereby, the book also sheds light on ambiguities of the regulation, thus providing the basis for more transparency and explicit discourse among both practitioners and scholars

The Review summarizes much of particle physics and cosmology. Using data from previous editions, plus 2,143 new measurements from 709 papers, we list, evaluate, and average measured properties of gauge bosons and the recently discovered Higgs boson, leptons, quarks, mesons, and baryons. We summarize searches for hypothetical particles such as supersymmetric particles, heavy bosons, axions, dark photons, etc. Particle properties and search limits are listed in Summary Tables. We give numerous tables, figures, formulae, and reviews of topics such as Higgs Boson Physics, Supersymmetry, Grand Unified Theories, Neutrino Mixing, Dark Energy, Dark Matter, Cosmology, Particle Detectors, Colliders, Probability and Statistics. Among the 120 reviews are many that are new or heavily revised, including a new review on Machine Learning, and one on Spectroscopy of Light Meson Resonances. The Review is divided into two volumes. Volume 1 includes the Summary Tables and 97 review articles. Volume 2 consists of the Particle Listings and contains also 23 reviews that address specific aspects of the data presented in the Listings. The complete Review (both volumes) is published online on the website of the Particle Data Group (pdg.lbl.gov) and in a journal. Volume 1 is available in print as the PDG Book. A Particle Physics Booklet with the Summary Tables and essential tables, figures, and equations from selected review articles is available in print, as a web version optimized for use on phones, and as an Android app.United States Department of Energy (DOE) DE-AC02-05CH11231government of Japan (Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology)Istituto Nazionale di Fisica Nucleare (INFN)Physical Society of Japan (JPS)European Laboratory for Particle Physics (CERN)United States Department of Energy (DOE

Scarico: It’s Only a Movie, Most of the Time

Exploitation cinema is a domain of motion picture content catering to a viewership interested in imagery that is more provocative than what mainstream audiences desire to see. These types of films are typically considered lowbrow entertainment and have been made in every era, albeit in a limited capacity proportional to the niche audience demand for them. Some time periods see a rise in exploitation film productions in response to a growing demand for such content from a larger share of the broader cinematic audience. This relationship indicates that period-specific cultural factors can cause mainstream audience members to seek out more lurid visuals than they typically would, the reasons for which are open to speculation among film scholars. Between 1960 to 1988 Italy experienced a boom in exploitation cinema. Because Italy also produced many art films during this timeframe that featured the same type of brutality and salaciousness of exploitation movies, the broader term of “transgressive” will be used to encompass all films from this era that pushed the envelope of sexuality or violence, regardless of what their artistic merit might be. This thesis proposes that Italy’s prolific transgressive cinema run was fueled by major political events happening concurrently with the loosening of censorship laws. The anxiety over decades-long crises prompted many in the general public to seek catharsis through viewing violence onscreen. A reduction in cinema censorship not only made audience anger relief by way of seeing violent imagery a possibility, but it additionally allowed for the display of never-before-seen sexual content, purveyed for its novelty rather than as a kind of emotional displacement. This thesis explains the cultural causes behind the rise and fall of Italy’s transgressive cinema movement

The Literature is unanimous about the sexual nature of tourism. Sex is part of life and if people participate in sexual activities at home, then certainly one must expect them to participate in sex when they travel. Actually, one must expect them to engage in more sexual experiences, due to the liminal nature of tourism or, at least, one must expect those experiences to be more intense, due to the loosening of social control. Most of the studies produced under the relationship between tourism and sex has focused disproportionately on commercial sex tourism, child sex tourism, tourist orientated prostitution, human trafficking, gender inequalities, violation of the human rights and the spread of HIV as a result of sex tourism. Despite the importance of these studies, helping raise awareness of legitimate issues, the commercialization of sex is only a small portion of the total spectrum of human sexual behavior in tourism context. For many people, especially couples or families on vacation, sex is a continuation of their regular lives, although possibly at a higher frequency and intensity. In fact, the vast majority of people who have sex when traveling, do it with their regular partners or with new partners in a short, but consensual and gratifying relationship. The purpose of this study is to examine tourists’ perspectives and practices related to sex and romance in one of the most recognized sun and beach tourism destinations in Europe, the Algarve (South Portugal). The Algarve is not a sex tourism destination. It is a destination for families, couples, and friends on vacation, where sex plays a central role, far away from home and the daily life constraints. Therefore, there is a need to understand tourists’ sexual behaviors beyond “sex tourism paradigm”. The research used a mixed methodology and tourists were invited to participate, answering a semi-structured interview guide and a questionnaire. In total, 29 interviews were recorded and 1.015 questionnaires were fulfilled and validated. The results show the strong relationship between holidays and romantic/sexual encounters, in terms of new involvements and in strengthening the existing relationships. The liminal nature of tourism provides new opportunities to engage in sex and romance with the usual partners or with new found partners. Because vacation time is limited, tourists live sex and romance in an extraordinary way, creating good memories about the experiences and the destination. In addition, the results show different behaviors according to gender. Sex double standard still constrains sexual perspectives and practices, in the case of women. Occasional sex is mainly part of the male imaginary, while women relate vacation trips to the ideal of investing in the existing relationships. Simultaneously, the sexual risk behaviors undertaken at the tourism destination, show the importance to analyze them in order to properly intervene.
