    A group-theoretic approach to formalizing bootstrapping problems

    The bootstrapping problem consists in designing agents that learn a model of themselves and the world, and utilize it to achieve useful tasks. It is different from other learning problems as the agent starts with uninterpreted observations and commands, and with minimal prior information about the world. In this paper, we give a mathematical formalization of this aspect of the problem. We argue that the vague constraint of having "no prior information" can be recast as a precise algebraic condition on the agent: that its behavior is invariant to particular classes of nuisances on the world, which we show can be well represented by actions of groups (diffeomorphisms, permutations, linear transformations) on observations and commands. We then introduce the class of bilinear gradient dynamics sensors (BGDS) as a candidate for learning generic robotic sensorimotor cascades. We show how framing the problem as rejection of group nuisances allows a compact and modular analysis of typical preprocessing stages, such as learning the topology of the sensors. We demonstrate learning and using such models on real-world range-finder and camera data from publicly available datasets

    Integrated design of dynamic controller with fault diagnosis and tolerance

    Fault detection capability tends to become an integral part of control system design procedures for practical engineering systems. It is thus desirable fault diagnosis/tolerance functions to also be included in the controller design. In this context, we develop a generic observer-based feedback controller where the observer-part can also generate a residual signal for fault detection purposes. The design objectives is a mixture of Hinfin control and Hinfin fault detection and isolation. This multi-objective optimization problem is then formulated using Bilinear Matrix Inequalities (BMI) and a sub-optimal solution is achieved via transformation to Linear Matrix Inequalities (LMI). The developed approach and algorithm are verified in study of an application to a railway suspension system of ride quality maintenance

    Novel methods for real-time 3D facial recognition

    In this paper we discuss our approach to real-time 3D face recognition. We argue the need for real time operation in a realistic scenario and highlight the required pre- and post-processing operations for effective 3D facial recognition. We focus attention to some operations including face and eye detection, and fast post-processing operations such as hole filling, mesh smoothing and noise removal. We consider strategies for hole filling such as bilinear and polynomial interpolation and Laplace and conclude that bilinear interpolation is preferred. Gaussian and moving average smoothing strategies are compared and it is shown that moving average can have the edge over Gaussian smoothing. The regions around the eyes normally carry a considerable amount of noise and strategies for replacing the eyeball with a spherical surface and the use of an elliptical mask in conjunction with hole filling are compared. Results show that the elliptical mask with hole filling works well on face models and it is simpler to implement. Finally performance issues are considered and the system has demonstrated to be able to perform real-time 3D face recognition in just over 1s 200ms per face model for a small database

    Analysis of bilinear oscillators under harmonic loading using nonlinear output frequency response functions

    In this paper, the new concept of Nonlinear Output Frequency Response Functions (NOFRFs) is extended to the harmonic input case, an input-independent relationship is found between the NOFRFs and the Generalized Frequency Response Functions (GFRFs). This relationship can greatly simplify the application of the NOFRFs. Then, beginning with the demonstration that a bilinear oscillator can be approximated using a polynomial type nonlinear oscillator, the NOFRFs are used to analyze the energy transfer phenomenon of bilinear oscillators in the frequency domain. The analysis provides insight into how new frequency generation can occur using bilinear oscillators and how the sub-resonances occur for the bilinear oscillators, and reveals that it is the resonant frequencies of the NOFRFs that dominate the occurrence of this well-known nonlinear behaviour. The results are of significance for the design and fault diagnosis of mechanical systems and structures which can be described by a bilinear oscillator model

    Entangled-photon Fourier optics

    Entangled photons, generated by spontaneous parametric down-conversion from a second-order nonlinear crystal, present a rich potential for imaging and image-processing applications. Since this source is an example of a three-wave mixing process, there is more flexibility in the choices of illumination and detection wavelengths and in the placement of object(s) to be imaged. Moreover, this source is entangled, a fact that allows for imaging configurations and capabilities that cannot be achieved using classical sources of light. In this paper we examine a number of imaging and image-processing configurations that can be realized using this source. The formalism that we utilize facilitates the determination of the dependence of imaging resolution on the physical parameters of the optical arrangement.Comment: 41 pages, 12 figures, accepted for publication in J. Among different kinds of models for fuzzy systems, the so-called Takagi-Sugeno (T-S) fuzzy model has been quite popular due to its convenient and simple dynamic structure as well as its capability of approximating any smooth nonlinear function to any specified accuracy within any compact set. In terms of such a model, the performance analysis and the design of controllers and filters play important roles in the research of fuzzy systems. In this paper, we aim to survey some recent advances on the T-S fuzzy control and filtering problems with various network-induced phenomena. The network-induced phenomena under consideration mainly include communication delays, packet dropouts, signal quantization, and randomly occurring uncertainties (ROUs). With such network-induced phenomena, the developments on T-S fuzzy control and filtering issues are reviewed in detail. In addition, some latest results on this topic are highlighted.     Crack detection using nonlinear output frequency response functions - an experimental study

    The new concept of Nonlinear Output Frequency Response Functions (NOFRFs) is introduced in this paper to detect cracks in beams using frequency domain information. The results show that the NOFRFs are a sensitive indicator of the presence of cracks providing the excitation is of an appropriate strength. The new results provide a novel and effective method for the detection of cracks in beams, with applications in structural fault diagnosis
