Get PDF
The main objective of this chapter is to examine the trends of academic scientific collaboration (SC) at a distance among public universities located in peripheral countries: Spain, Italy, Greece, and Portugal. The data to capture scientific collaboration consists of a set of co-authored articles published between 2001 and 2010 by universities located in the mentioned Southern countries, indexed by the Science Citation Index expanded (SCI Expanded) of the Information Sciences Institute (ISI) Web of Science (WoS) database. We link this data to institution-level information provided by the EUMIDA dataset. In addition, we retrieved regional data on economic variables from Eurostat. The methodology relies on a descriptive analysis of the evolution of co-publications at different notions of proximity. Our results show a trend toward collaboration over longer distances, although we find heterogeneity by countries and disciplines. Building on our results, we provide some policy implications

Objective: The number of citations an article receives after its publication reflects its impact on the scientific community. Our purpose was to identify and examine the characteristics of the most frequently cited articles in the field of critical care medicine. Design: The 74 top-cited articles in critical care journals were identified by a computer search using the database of the Science Citation Index Expanded (SCI-EXPANDED, 1945 to present) and the Web of SCIENCE. The 45 top-cited critical care articles in all other biomedical journals were identified using the database SciSearch (1974 to present) with the key word "Critical Care”. Results: The most cited articles received 3402 and 2860 citations, respectively. The citation classics in critical care journals were published between 1968 and 1999 in six high-impact journals, led by Critical Care Medicine (37 articles), followed by the Journal of Trauma (21), and American Journal of Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine (9). Seventy articles were original publications, two were reviews or guidelines, and two were editorials. The top 45 classic articles in non-critical care journals were published in 13 different journals, led by the New England Journal of Medicine (11 articles), followed by JAMA and Lancet (6 articles each). The United States of America contributed most of the classic articles. Pathophysiology of the lung, sepsis and scoring systems were the primary focus of classic publications. Conclusions: Our analysis gives a historical perspective on the scientific progress of critical care medicine and allows for recognition of important advances in this specialt

Get PDF
This article presents the results of a systematic literature review conducted to characterize the development of the field of Technology-Based Entrepreneurship (TBE) and its contribution to the evolution of the techno-scientific convergence of NBIC (Nanotechnology, Biotechnology, Information technology, and Cognitive science). This review used the Tree of Science (based on the SAP algorithm) to process references of indexed documents. The search retrieved sixty-nine articles published between 2000 and 2021 in the main collection of Web of Science, along with their respective Science Citation Index Expanded (SCI-Expanded), Social Sciences Citation Index (SSCI), Arts & Humanities Citation Index (A&HCI), Emerging Sources Citation Index (ESCI). The most relevant documents show that universities can become catalysts between entrepreneurial students, professors, researchers, and investors, who can work together in the development of high-value, highly specialized projects. The meeting point between TBE and techno-scientific convergence was found in the need for multidisciplinary work teams, the integration of collaborative networks, and funding during development stages. Likewise, the link between science and business is growing stronger as the time between innovation and its impact on business is reduced. It is concluded that education can become the most important strategy for technology transfer—connecting entrepreneurs with converging technologies—because such transfer requires highly-specialized knowledge.
