    Deep deformable models for 3D human body

    Deformable models are powerful tools for modelling the 3D shape variations for a class of objects. However, currently the application and performance of deformable models for human body are restricted due to the limitations in current 3D datasets, annotations, and the model formulation itself. In this thesis, we address the issue by making the following contributions in the field of 3D human body modelling, monocular reconstruction and data collection/annotation. Firstly, we propose a deep mesh convolutional network based deformable model for 3D human body. We demonstrate the merit of this model in the task of monocular human mesh recovery. While outperforming current state of the art models in mesh recovery accuracy, the model is also light weighted and more flexible as it can be trained end-to-end and fine-tuned for a specific task. A second contribution is a bone level skinned model of 3D human mesh, in which bone modelling and identity-specific variation modelling are decoupled. Such formulation allows the use of mesh convolutional networks for capturing detailed identity specific variations, while explicitly controlling and modelling the pose variations through linear blend skinning with built-in motion constraints. This formulation not only significantly increases the accuracy in 3D human mesh reconstruction, but also facilitates accurate in the wild character animation and retargetting. Finally we present a large scale dataset of over 1.3 million 3D human body scans in daily clothing. The dataset contains over 12 hours of 4D recordings at 30 FPS, consisting of 7566 dynamic sequences of 3D meshes from 4205 subjects. We propose a fast and accurate sequence registration pipeline which facilitates markerless motion capture and automatic dense annotation for the raw scans, leading to automatic synthetic image and annotation generation that boosts the performance for tasks such as monocular human mesh reconstruction.Open Acces

    Registration of 3D Point Clouds and Meshes: A Survey From Rigid to Non-Rigid

    Three-dimensional surface registration transforms multiple three-dimensional data sets into the same coordinate system so as to align overlapping components of these sets. Recent surveys have covered different aspects of either rigid or nonrigid registration, but seldom discuss them as a whole. Our study serves two purposes: 1) To give a comprehensive survey of both types of registration, focusing on three-dimensional point clouds and meshes and 2) to provide a better understanding of registration from the perspective of data fitting. Registration is closely related to data fitting in which it comprises three core interwoven components: model selection, correspondences and constraints, and optimization. Study of these components 1) provides a basis for comparison of the novelties of different techniques, 2) reveals the similarity of rigid and nonrigid registration in terms of problem representations, and 3) shows how overfitting arises in nonrigid registration and the reasons for increasing interest in intrinsic techniques. We further summarize some practical issues of registration which include initializations and evaluations, and discuss some of our own observations, insights and foreseeable research trends

    Fast Gravitational Approach for Rigid Point Set Registration with Ordinary Differential Equations

    This article introduces a new physics-based method for rigid point set alignment called Fast Gravitational Approach (FGA). In FGA, the source and target point sets are interpreted as rigid particle swarms with masses interacting in a globally multiply-linked manner while moving in a simulated gravitational force field. The optimal alignment is obtained by explicit modeling of forces acting on the particles as well as their velocities and displacements with second-order ordinary differential equations of motion. Additional alignment cues (point-based or geometric features, and other boundary conditions) can be integrated into FGA through particle masses. We propose a smooth-particle mass function for point mass initialization, which improves robustness to noise and structural discontinuities. To avoid prohibitive quadratic complexity of all-to-all point interactions, we adapt a Barnes-Hut tree for accelerated force computation and achieve quasilinear computational complexity. We show that the new method class has characteristics not found in previous alignment methods such as efficient handling of partial overlaps, inhomogeneous point sampling densities, and coping with large point clouds with reduced runtime compared to the state of the art. Experiments show that our method performs on par with or outperforms all compared competing non-deep-learning-based and general-purpose techniques (which do not assume the availability of training data and a scene prior) in resolving transformations for LiDAR data and gains state-of-the-art accuracy and speed when coping with different types of data disturbances.Comment: 18 pages, 18 figures and two table

    Automated analysis and visualization of preclinical whole-body microCT data

    In this thesis, several strategies are presented that aim to facilitate the analysis and visualization of whole-body in vivo data of small animals. Based on the particular challenges for image processing, when dealing with whole-body follow-up data, we addressed several aspects in this thesis. The developed methods are tailored to handle data of subjects with significantly varying posture and address the large tissue heterogeneity of entire animals. In addition, we aim to compensate for lacking tissue contrast by relying on approximation of organs based on an animal atlas.     Real-time human performance capture and synthesis

    Most of the images one finds in the media, such as on the Internet or in textbooks and magazines, contain humans as the main point of attention. Thus, there is an inherent necessity for industry, society, and private persons to be able to thoroughly analyze and synthesize the human-related content in these images. One aspect of this analysis and subject of this thesis is to infer the 3D pose and surface deformation, using only visual information, which is also known as human performance capture. Human performance capture enables the tracking of virtual characters from real-world observations, and this is key for visual effects, games, VR, and AR, to name just a few application areas. However, traditional capture methods usually rely on expensive multi-view (marker-based) systems that are prohibitively expensive for the vast majority of people, or they use depth sensors, which are still not as common as single color cameras. Recently, some approaches have attempted to solve the task by assuming only a single RGB image is given. Nonetheless, they can either not track the dense deforming geometry of the human, such as the clothing layers, or they are far from real time, which is indispensable for many applications. To overcome these shortcomings, this thesis proposes two monocular human performance capture methods, which for the first time allow the real-time capture of the dense deforming geometry as well as an unseen 3D accuracy for pose and surface deformations. At the technical core, this work introduces novel GPU-based and data-parallel optimization strategies in conjunction with other algorithmic design choices that are all geared towards real-time performance at high accuracy. Moreover, this thesis presents a new weakly supervised multiview training strategy combined with a fully differentiable character representation that shows superior 3D accuracy. However, there is more to human-related Computer Vision than only the analysis of people in images. It is equally important to synthesize new images of humans in unseen poses and also from camera viewpoints that have not been observed in the real world. Such tools are essential for the movie industry because they, for example, allow the synthesis of photo-realistic virtual worlds with real-looking humans or of contents that are too dangerous for actors to perform on set. But also video conferencing and telepresence applications can benefit from photo-real 3D characters, as they can enhance the immersive experience of these applications. Here, the traditional Computer Graphics pipeline for rendering photo-realistic images involves many tedious and time-consuming steps that require expert knowledge and are far from real time. Traditional rendering involves character rigging and skinning, the modeling of the surface appearance properties, and physically based ray tracing. Recent learning-based methods attempt to simplify the traditional rendering pipeline and instead learn the rendering function from data resulting in methods that are easier accessible to non-experts. However, most of them model the synthesis task entirely in image space such that 3D consistency cannot be achieved, and/or they fail to model motion- and view-dependent appearance effects. To this end, this thesis presents a method and ongoing work on character synthesis, which allow the synthesis of controllable photoreal characters that achieve motion- and view-dependent appearance effects as well as 3D consistency and which run in real time. This is technically achieved by a novel coarse-to-fine geometric character representation for efficient synthesis, which can be solely supervised on multi-view imagery. Furthermore, this work shows how such a geometric representation can be combined with an implicit surface representation to boost synthesis and geometric quality.In den meisten Bildern in den heutigen Medien, wie dem Internet, Büchern und Magazinen, ist der Mensch das zentrale Objekt der Bildkomposition. Daher besteht eine inhärente Notwendigkeit für die Industrie, die Gesellschaft und auch für Privatpersonen, die auf den Mensch fokussierten Eigenschaften in den Bildern detailliert analysieren und auch synthetisieren zu können. Ein Teilaspekt der Anaylse von menschlichen Bilddaten und damit Bestandteil der Thesis ist das Rekonstruieren der 3D-Skelett-Pose und der Oberflächendeformation des Menschen anhand von visuellen Informationen, was fachsprachlich auch als Human Performance Capture bezeichnet wird. Solche Rekonstruktionsverfahren ermöglichen das Tracking von virtuellen Charakteren anhand von Beobachtungen in der echten Welt, was unabdingbar ist für Applikationen im Bereich der visuellen Effekte, Virtual und Augmented Reality, um nur einige Applikationsfelder zu nennen. Nichtsdestotrotz basieren traditionelle Tracking-Methoden auf teuren (markerbasierten) Multi-Kamera Systemen, welche für die Mehrheit der Bevölkerung nicht erschwinglich sind oder auf Tiefenkameras, die noch immer nicht so gebräuchlich sind wie herkömmliche Farbkameras. In den letzten Jahren gab es daher erste Methoden, die versuchen, das Tracking-Problem nur mit Hilfe einer Farbkamera zu lösen. Allerdings können diese entweder die Kleidung der Person im Bild nicht tracken oder die Methoden benötigen zu viel Rechenzeit, als dass sie in realen Applikationen genutzt werden könnten. Um diese Probleme zu lösen, stellt die Thesis zwei monokulare Human Performance Capture Methoden vor, die zum ersten Mal eine Echtzeit-Rechenleistung erreichen sowie im Vergleich zu vorherigen Arbeiten die Genauigkeit von Pose und Oberfläche in 3D weiter verbessern. Der Kern der Methoden beinhaltet eine neuartige GPU-basierte und datenparallelisierte Optimierungsstrategie, die im Zusammenspiel mit anderen algorithmischen Designentscheidungen akkurate Ergebnisse erzeugt und dabei eine Echtzeit-Laufzeit ermöglicht. Daneben wird eine neue, differenzierbare und schwach beaufsichtigte, Multi-Kamera basierte Trainingsstrategie in Kombination mit einem komplett differenzierbaren Charaktermodell vorgestellt, welches ungesehene 3D Präzision erreicht. Allerdings spielt nicht nur die Analyse von Menschen in Bildern in Computer Vision eine wichtige Rolle, sondern auch die Möglichkeit, neue Bilder von Personen in unterschiedlichen Posen und Kamera- Blickwinkeln synthetisch zu rendern, ohne dass solche Daten zuvor in der Realität aufgenommen wurden. Diese Methoden sind unabdingbar für die Filmindustrie, da sie es zum Beispiel ermöglichen, fotorealistische virtuelle Welten mit real aussehenden Menschen zu erzeugen, sowie die Möglichkeit bieten, Szenen, die für den Schauspieler zu gefährlich sind, virtuell zu produzieren, ohne dass eine reale Person diese Aktionen tatsächlich ausführen muss. Aber auch Videokonferenzen und Telepresence-Applikationen können von fotorealistischen 3D-Charakteren profitieren, da diese die immersive Erfahrung von solchen Applikationen verstärken. Traditionelle Verfahren zum Rendern von fotorealistischen Bildern involvieren viele mühsame und zeitintensive Schritte, welche Expertenwissen vorraussetzen und zudem auch Rechenzeiten erreichen, die jenseits von Echtzeit sind. Diese Schritte beinhalten das Rigging und Skinning von virtuellen Charakteren, das Modellieren von Reflektions- und Materialeigenschaften sowie physikalisch basiertes Ray Tracing. Vor Kurzem haben Deep Learning-basierte Methoden versucht, die Rendering-Funktion von Daten zu lernen, was in Verfahren resultierte, die eine Nutzung durch Nicht-Experten ermöglicht. Allerdings basieren die meisten Methoden auf Synthese-Verfahren im 2D-Bildbereich und können daher keine 3D-Konsistenz garantieren. Darüber hinaus gelingt es den meisten Methoden auch nicht, bewegungs- und blickwinkelabhängige Effekte zu erzeugen. Daher präsentiert diese Thesis eine neue Methode und eine laufende Forschungsarbeit zum Thema Charakter-Synthese, die es erlauben, fotorealistische und kontrollierbare 3D-Charakteren synthetisch zu rendern, die nicht nur 3D-konsistent sind, sondern auch bewegungs- und blickwinkelabhängige Effekte modellieren und Echtzeit-Rechenzeiten ermöglichen. Dazu wird eine neuartige Grobzu- Fein-Charakterrepräsentation für effiziente Bild-Synthese von Menschen vorgestellt, welche nur anhand von Multi-Kamera-Daten trainiert werden kann. Daneben wird gezeigt, wie diese explizite Geometrie- Repräsentation mit einer impliziten Oberflächendarstellung kombiniert werden kann, was eine bessere Synthese von geomtrischen Deformationen sowie Bildern ermöglicht.ERC Consolidator Grant 4DRepL

    Preface These are the proceedings of DEFORM'06, the Workshop on Image Registration in Deformable Environments, associated to BMVC'06, the 17th British Machine Vision Conference, held in Edinburgh, UK, in September 2006. The goal of DEFORM'06 was to bring together people from different domains having interests in deformable image registration. In response to our Call for Papers, we received 17 submissions and selected 8 for oral presentation at the workshop. In addition to the regular papers, Andrew Fitzgibbon from Microsoft Research Cambridge gave an invited talk at the workshop.     High-fidelity Human Body Modelling from User-generated Data

    PhD thesisBuilding high-fidelity human body models for real people benefits a variety of applications, like fashion, health, entertainment, education and ergonomics applications. The goal of this thesis is to build visually plausible human body models from two kinds of user-generated data: low-quality point clouds and low-resolution 2D images. Due to the advances in 3D scanning technology and the growing availability of cost-effective 3D scanners to general users, a full human body scan can be easily acquired within two minutes. However, due to the imperfections of scanning devices, occlusion, self-occlusion and untrained scanning operation, the acquired scans tend to be full of noise, holes (missing data), outliers and distorted parts. In this thesis, the establishment of shape correspondences for human body meshes is firstly investigated. A robust and shape-aware approach is proposed to detect accurate shape correspondences for closed human body meshes. By investigating the vertex movements of 200 human body meshes, a robust non-rigid mesh registration method is proposed which combines the human body shape model with the traditional nonrigid ICP. To facilitate the development and benchmarking of registration methods on Kinect Fusion data, a dataset of user-generated scansis built, named Kinect-based 3D Human Body (K3D-hub) Dataset, with one Microsoft Kinect for XBOX 360. Besides building 3D human body models from point clouds, the problem is also tackled which estimates accurate 3D human body models from single 2D images. A state-of-the-art parametric 3D human body model SMPL is fitted to 2D joints as well as the boundary of the human body. Fast Region based CNN and deep CNN based methods are adopted to detect the 2D joints and boundary for each human body image automatically. Considering the commonly encountered scenario where people are in stable poses at most of the time, a stable pose prior is introduced from CMU motion capture (mocap) dataset for further improving the accuracy of pose estimation

    Effective 3D Geometric Matching for Data Restoration and Its Forensic Application

    3D geometric matching is the technique to detect the similar patterns among multiple objects. It is an important and fundamental problem and can facilitate many tasks in computer graphics and vision, including shape comparison and retrieval, data fusion, scene understanding and object recognition, and data restoration. For example, 3D scans of an object from different angles are matched and stitched together to form the complete geometry. In medical image analysis, the motion of deforming organs is modeled and predicted by matching a series of CT images. This problem is challenging and remains unsolved, especially when the similar patterns are 1) small and lack geometric saliency; 2) incomplete due to the occlusion of the scanning and damage of the data. We study the reliable matching algorithm that can tackle the above difficulties and its application in data restoration. Data restoration is the problem to restore the fragmented or damaged model to its original complete state. It is a new area and has direct applications in many scientific fields such as Forensics and Archeology. In this dissertation, we study novel effective geometric matching algorithms, including curve matching, surface matching, pairwise matching, multi-piece matching and template matching. We demonstrate its applications in an integrated digital pipeline of skull reassembly, skull completion, and facial reconstruction, which is developed to facilitate the state-of-the-art forensic skull/facial reconstruction processing pipeline in law enforcement
