Datacenter Traffic Control: Understanding Techniques and Trade-offs
Datacenters provide cost-effective and flexible access to scalable compute
and storage resources necessary for today's cloud computing needs. A typical
datacenter is made up of thousands of servers connected with a large network
and usually managed by one operator. To provide quality access to the variety
of applications and services hosted on datacenters and maximize performance, it
deems necessary to use datacenter networks effectively and efficiently.
Datacenter traffic is often a mix of several classes with different priorities
and requirements. This includes user-generated interactive traffic, traffic
with deadlines, and long-running traffic. To this end, custom transport
protocols and traffic management techniques have been developed to improve
datacenter network performance.
In this tutorial paper, we review the general architecture of datacenter
networks, various topologies proposed for them, their traffic properties,
general traffic control challenges in datacenters and general traffic control
objectives. The purpose of this paper is to bring out the important
characteristics of traffic control in datacenters and not to survey all
existing solutions (as it is virtually impossible due to massive body of
existing research). We hope to provide readers with a wide range of options and
factors while considering a variety of traffic control mechanisms. We discuss
various characteristics of datacenter traffic control including management
schemes, transmission control, traffic shaping, prioritization, load balancing,
multipathing, and traffic scheduling. Next, we point to several open challenges
as well as new and interesting networking paradigms. At the end of this paper,
we briefly review inter-datacenter networks that connect geographically
dispersed datacenters which have been receiving increasing attention recently

Merlin: A Language for Provisioning Network Resources
This paper presents Merlin, a new framework for managing resources in
software-defined networks. With Merlin, administrators express high-level
policies using programs in a declarative language. The language includes
logical predicates to identify sets of packets, regular expressions to encode
forwarding paths, and arithmetic formulas to specify bandwidth constraints. The
Merlin compiler uses a combination of advanced techniques to translate these
policies into code that can be executed on network elements including a
constraint solver that allocates bandwidth using parameterizable heuristics. To
facilitate dynamic adaptation, Merlin provides mechanisms for delegating
control of sub-policies and for verifying that modifications made to
sub-policies do not violate global constraints. Experiments demonstrate the
expressiveness and scalability of Merlin on real-world topologies and
applications. Overall, Merlin simplifies network administration by providing
high-level abstractions for specifying network policies and scalable
infrastructure for enforcing them
A recursive approach to network management
Nowadays there is an increasing need for a general management paradigm which can simplify network management and further enable network innovations. In this paper, in response to limitations of current Software Defined Networking (SDN) management solutions, we propose a recursive approach to enterprise network management, where network management is done through managing various Virtual Transport Networks (VTNs). Different from the traditional virtual network model which mainly focuses on routing/tunneling, our VTN provides communication service with explicit Quality-of-Service (QoS) support for applications via transport flows, and it involves all mechanisms (e:g:, routing, addressing, error and flow control, resource allocation) needed to support such transport flows. Based on this approach, we design and implement a management layer, which recurses the same VTN-based management mechanism for enterprise network management. Comparing with an SDN-based management approach, our experimental results show that our management layer achieves better network performance
A Survey on the Contributions of Software-Defined Networking to Traffic Engineering
Since the appearance of OpenFlow back in 2008, software-defined networking (SDN) has gained momentum. Although there are some discrepancies between the standards developing organizations working with SDN about what SDN is and how it is defined, they all outline traffic engineering (TE) as a key application. One of the most common objectives of TE is the congestion minimization, where techniques such as traffic splitting among multiple paths or advanced reservation systems are used. In such a scenario, this manuscript surveys the role of a comprehensive list of SDN protocols in TE solutions, in order to assess how these protocols can benefit TE. The SDN protocols have been categorized using the SDN architecture proposed by the open networking foundation, which differentiates among data-controller plane interfaces, application-controller plane interfaces, and management interfaces, in order to state how the interface type in which they operate influences TE. In addition, the impact of the SDN protocols on TE has been evaluated by comparing them with the path computation element (PCE)-based architecture. The PCE-based architecture has been selected to measure the impact of SDN on TE because it is the most novel TE architecture until the date, and because it already defines a set of metrics to measure the performance of TE solutions. Multi-layer virtual transport network management

Software Defined Networking (SDN) is an efficient way to make the network programmable and reduce management complexity, however it is plagued with limitations inherited from the legacy Internet (TCP/IP) architecture. Effectiveness of segment routing technology in reducing the bandwidth and cloud resources provisioning times in network function virtualization architectures
Network Function Virtualization is a new technology allowing for a elastic cloud and bandwidth resource allocation. The technology requires an orchestrator whose role is the service and resource orchestration. It receives service requests, each one characterized by a Service Function Chain, which is a set of service functions to be executed according to a given order. It implements an algorithm for deciding where both to allocate the cloud and bandwidth resources and to route the SFCs. In a traditional orchestration algorithm, the orchestrator has a detailed knowledge of the cloud and network infrastructures and that can lead to high computational complexity of the SFC Routing and Cloud and Bandwidth resource Allocation (SRCBA) algorithm. In this paper, we propose and evaluate the effectiveness of a scalable orchestration architecture inherited by the one proposed within the European Telecommunications Standards Institute (ETSI) and based on the functional separation of an NFV orchestrator in Resource Orchestrator (RO) and Network Service Orchestrator (NSO). Each cloud domain is equipped with an RO whose task is to provide a simple and abstract representation of the cloud infrastructure. These representations are notified of the NSO that can apply a simplified and less complex SRCBA algorithm. In addition, we show how the segment routing technology can help to simplify the SFC routing by means of an effective addressing of the service functions. The scalable orchestration solution has been investigated and compared to the one of a traditional orchestrator in some network scenarios and varying the number of cloud domains. We have verified that the execution time of the SRCBA algorithm can be drastically reduced without degrading the performance in terms of cloud and bandwidth resource costs
Content Based Traffic Engineering in Software Defined Information Centric Networks
This paper describes a content centric network architecture which uses
software defined networking principles to implement efficient metadata driven
services by extracting content metadata at the network layer. The ability to
access content metadata transparently enables a number of new services in the
network. Specific examples discussed here include: a metadata driven traffic
engineering scheme which uses prior knowledge of content length to optimize
content delivery, a metadata driven content firewall which is more resilient
than traditional firewalls and differentiated treatment of content based on the
type of content being accessed. A detailed outline of an implementation of the
proposed architecture is presented along with some basic evaluation
Multicast traffic aggregation in MPLS-based VPN networks
This article gives an overview of the current
practical approaches under study for a scalable implementation of multicast in layer 2 and 3 VPNs over an IP-MPLS multiservice network. These proposals are based on a well-known technique: the aggregation of traffic into shared
trees to manage the forwarding state vs. bandwidth saving trade-off. This sort of traffic engineering mechanism requires methods to estimate the resources needed to set up a multicast shared tree for a set of VPNs.
