The relationship between IR and multimedia databases

    Get PDF
Modern extensible database systems support multimedia data through ADTs. However, because of the problems with multimedia query formulation, this support is not sufficient.\ud \ud Multimedia querying requires an iterative search process involving many different representations of the objects in the database. The support that is needed is very similar to the processes in information retrieval.\ud \ud Based on this observation, we develop the miRRor architecture for multimedia query processing. We design a layered framework based on information retrieval techniques, to provide a usable query interface to the multimedia database.\ud \ud First, we introduce a concept layer to enable reasoning over low-level concepts in the database.\ud \ud Second, we add an evidential reasoning layer as an intermediate between the user and the concept layer.\ud \ud Third, we add the functionality to process the users' relevance feedback.\ud \ud We then adapt the inference network model from text retrieval to an evidential reasoning model for multimedia query processing.\ud \ud We conclude with an outline for implementation of miRRor on top of the Monet extensible database system

This paper reports on the third Early Aspects: Aspect-Oriented Requirements Engineering and Architecture Design Workshop, which has been held in Lancaster, UK, on March 21, 2004. The workshop included a presentation session and working sessions in which the particular topics on early aspects were discussed. The primary goal of the workshop was to focus on challenges to defining methodical software development processes for aspects from early on in the software life cycle and explore the potential of proposed methods and techniques to scale up to industrial applications

Querying Capability Enhancement in Database Using Fuzzy Logic

We already know that Structured Query Language (SQL) is a very powerful tool. It handles data, which is crisp and precise in nature.but it is unable to satisfy the needs for data which is uncertain, imprecise, inapplicable and vague in nature. The goal of this work is to use Fuzzy techniques i.e linguistic expressions and degrees of truth whose result are presented in this paper. For this purpose we have developed the fuzzy generalized logical condition for the WHERE part of SQL. In this way, fuzzy queries are accessing relational databases in the same way as with SQL. These queries with linguistic hedges are converted into Crisp Query, by deploying an application layer over the Structured Query Languag

Relational Representation of Uncertain and Imprecise Time Assess-ments: An Application to Artworks Dating.

Imprecision and uncertainty appear together in many situations of real life and thereforesoft computing techniques must be studied to tackle this problem. Imprecise and uncertainvalues are usually expressed by means of linguistic terms, specially when they have beenprovidedbya human being. This is also the case of temporal information where, inaddition to handling time constraints, we may also have both uncertainty and imprecisionin the description, like in the sentence”It is very possible that Giotto’s Crucifix was paintedby 1289”. To manage both uncertainty (very possible) and imprecision (by 1289) in aseparate way would lead to a quite complicated computation and a lack of comprehensionby the users of the system. Because of these reasons, it is very desirable that bothsources of imperfection of time values are combined into a single value which appropriatelydescribes the intended information. In this work, we extend our previous research on thistopic and we study how to adapt it to relational systems in order to be useful. The finalgoal is obtaining normalized fuzzy values that provide an equivalent information about thedescribed temporal fact than the original ones, for making it possible to store and managethem in a fuzzy relational database. On the other hand, there will be some situationswhere more than one expert opinion about a time period must be taken into account andwe need to find a representative value of them all in order to be stored and managed. Forthe sake of simplicity, comprehensibility and the efficiency in computation (when usingtrapezoidal representation), the fuzzy average is used to find such a representative value

Treatment of imprecision in data repositories with the aid of KNOLAP

Traditional data repositories introduced for the needs of business processing, typically focus on the storage and querying of crisp domains of data. As a result, current commercial data repositories have no facilities for either storing or querying imprecise/ approximate data. No significant attempt has been made for a generic and applicationindependent representation of value imprecision mainly as a property of axes of analysis and also as part of dynamic environment, where potential users may wish to define their “own” axes of analysis for querying either precise or imprecise facts. In such cases, measured values and facts are characterised by descriptive values drawn from a number of dimensions, whereas values of a dimension are organised as hierarchical levels. A solution named H-IFS is presented that allows the representation of flexible hierarchies as part of the dimension structures. An extended multidimensional model named IF-Cube is put forward, which allows the representation of imprecision in facts and dimensions and answering of queries based on imprecise hierarchical preferences. Based on the H-IFS and IF-Cube concepts, a post relational OLAP environment is delivered, the implementation of which is DBMS independent and its performance solely dependent on the underlying DBMS engine

Context Aware Computing for The Internet of Things: A Survey

    Get PDF
As we are moving towards the Internet of Things (IoT), the number of sensors deployed around the world is growing at a rapid pace. Market research has shown a significant growth of sensor deployments over the past decade and has predicted a significant increment of the growth rate in the future. These sensors continuously generate enormous amounts of data. However, in order to add value to raw sensor data we need to understand it. Collection, modelling, reasoning, and distribution of context in relation to sensor data plays critical role in this challenge. Context-aware computing has proven to be successful in understanding sensor data. In this paper, we survey context awareness from an IoT perspective. We present the necessary background by introducing the IoT paradigm and context-aware fundamentals at the beginning. Then we provide an in-depth analysis of context life cycle. We evaluate a subset of projects (50) which represent the majority of research and commercial solutions proposed in the field of context-aware computing conducted over the last decade (2001-2011) based on our own taxonomy. Finally, based on our evaluation, we highlight the lessons to be learnt from the past and some possible directions for future research. The survey addresses a broad range of techniques, methods, models, functionalities, systems, applications, and middleware solutions related to context awareness and IoT. Our goal is not only to analyse, compare and consolidate past research work but also to appreciate their findings and discuss their applicability towards the IoT.Comment: IEEE Communications Surveys & Tutorials Journal, 201

An overview of decision table literature 1982-1995.

    Get PDF
This report gives an overview of the literature on decision tables over the past 15 years. As much as possible, for each reference, an author supplied abstract, a number of keywords and a classification are provided. In some cases own comments are added. The purpose of these comments is to show where, how and why decision tables are used. The literature is classified according to application area, theoretical versus practical character, year of publication, country or origin (not necessarily country of publication) and the language of the document. After a description of the scope of the interview, classification results and the classification by topic are presented. The main body of the paper is the ordered list of publications with abstract, classification and comments.

In this paper an application for evaluation and control of software projects is presented. The novelty of this application is that it has been developed using an extended database management system with fuzzy logic. In addition to the usual tasks of a project control tool, this application allows to evaluate the management of a project, taking into consideration the benefits of fuzzy queries.

Interval Neutrosophic Sets and Logic: Theory and Applications in Computing

    Get PDF
A neutrosophic set is a part of neutrosophy that studies the origin, nature, and scope of neutralities, as well as their interactions with different ideational spectra. The neutrosophic set is a powerful general formal framework that has been recently proposed. However, the neutrosophic set needs to be specified from a technical point of view. Here, we define the set-theoretic operators on an instance of a neutrosophic set, and call it an Interval Neutrosophic Set (INS). We prove various properties of INS, which are connected to operations and relations over INS. We also introduce a new logic system based on interval neutrosophic sets. We study the interval neutrosophic propositional calculus and interval neutrosophic predicate calculus. We also create a neutrosophic logic inference system based on interval neutrosophic logic. Under the framework of the interval neutrosophic set, we propose a data model based on the special case of the interval neutrosophic sets called Neutrosophic Data Model. This data model is the extension of fuzzy data model and paraconsistent data model. We generalize the set-theoretic operators and relation-theoretic operators of fuzzy relations and paraconsistent relations to neutrosophic relations. We propose the generalized SQL query constructs and tuple-relational calculus for Neutrosophic Data Model. We also design an architecture of Semantic Web Services agent based on the interval neutrosophic logic and do the simulation study

This paper describes an innovative solution for geovisualization of the demographic and administrative history of French municipalities named communes in French. This solution allows for the open dissemination of such data. The challenge is to provide a web interface for unskilled users in order to help them understand complex information about the demographic evolution of French territories. Our approach combines interactive thematic spatial and temporal views. We describe our architecture based on open-source technologies and the organization of this imperfect geo-historical information in our spatiotemporal database. Our second contribution concerns the concept of an acquaintance graph that has been used to obtain an efficient design with good performance in our geovisualization website
