    Surface Electromyographic (sEMG) Transduction of Hand Joint Angles for Human Interfacing Devices (HID)

    This is an investigation of the use of surface electromyography (sEMG) as a tool to improve human interfacing devices (HID) information bandwidth through the transduction of the fingertip workspace. It combines the work of Merletti et al and Jarque-Bou et al to design an open-source framework for Fingertip Workspace based Human Interfacing Devices (HID). In this framework, the fingertip workspace is defined as the system of forearm and hand muscle force through a tensor which describes hand anthropometry. The thesis discusses the electrophysiology of muscle tissue along with the anatomy and physiology of the arm in pursuit of optimizing sensor location, muscle force measurements, and viable command gestures. Algorithms for correlating sEMG to hand joint angle are investigated using MATLAB for both static and moving gestures. Seven sEMG spots and Fingertip Joint Angles recorded by Jarque Bou et al are investigated for the application of sEMG to Human Interfacing Devices (HID). Such technology is termed Gesture Computer Interfacing (GCI) and has been shown feasible through devices such as CTRL Labs interface, and models such as those of Sartori, Merletti, and Zhao. Muscles under sEMG spots in this dataset and the actions related to them are discussed, along with what muscles and hand actions are not visible within this dataset. Viable gestures for detection algorithms are discussed based on the muscles discerned to be visible in the dataset through intensity, spectral moment, power spectra, and coherence. Detection and isolation of such viable actions is fundamental to designing an EMG driven musculoskeletal model of the hand needed to facilitate GCI. Enveloping, spectral moment, power spectrum, and coherence analysis are applied to a Sollerman Hand Function Test sEMG dataset of twenty-two subjects performing 26 activities of living to differentiate pinching and grasping tasks. Pinches and grasps were found to cause very different activation patterns in sEMG spot 3 relating to flexion of digits I - V. Spectral moment was found to be less correlated with differentiation and provided information about the degree of object manipulation performed and extent of fatigue during each task. Coherence was shown to increase between flexors and extensors with intensity of task but was found corrupted by crosstalk with increasing intensity of muscular activation. Some spectral results correlated between finger flexor and extensor power spectra showed anticipatory coherence between the muscle groups at the end of object manipulation. An sEMG amplification system capable of capturing HD-sEMG with a bandwidth of 300 and 500 Hz at a sampling frequency of 2 kHz was designed for future work. The system was designed in ordinance with current IEEE research on sensor-electrode characteristics. Furthermore, discussion of solutions to open issues in HD-sEMG is provided. This work did not implement the designed wristband but serves as a literature review and open-source design using commercially available technologies

    Design of autonomous sustainable unmanned aerial vehicle - A novel approach to its dynamic wireless power transfer

The use of Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) has increased dramatically over the past years in different areas/fields such as marines, mountains, wild environments. Nowadays, there are many electric UAVs development with fast computational speed and autonomous flying has been a reality by fusing many sensors such as camera tracking sensor, obstacle avoiding sensor, radar sensor, etc. But there is one main problem still not able to overcome which is power requirement for continuous autonomous operation. When the operation needs more power, but batteries can only give for 20 to 30 mins of flight time. These types of system are not reliable for long term civilian operation because we need to recharge or replace batteries by landing the craft every time when we want to continue the operation. The large batteries also take more loads on the UAV which is also not a reliable system. To eliminate these obstacles, there should a recharging wireless power station in ground which can transmit power to these small UAVs wirelessly for long term operation. There will be camera attached in the drone to detect and hover above the Wireless Power Transfer device which got receiving and transmitting station can be use with deep learning and sensor fusion techniques for more reliable flight operations. This thesis explores the use of dynamic wireless power to transfer energy using novel rotating WPT charging technique to the UAV with improved range, endurance, and average speed by giving extra hours in the air. The hypothesis that was created has a broad application beyond UAVs. The drone autonomous charging was mostly done by detecting a rotating WPT receiver connected to main power outlet that served as a recharging platform using deep neural vision capabilities. It was the purpose of the thesis to provide an alternative to traditional self-charging systems that relies purely on static WPT method and requires little distance between the vehicle and receiver. When the UAV camera detect the WPT receiving station, it will try to align and hover using onboard sensors for best power transfer efficiency. Since this strategy relied on traditional automatic drone landing technique, but the target is rotating all the time which needs smart approaches like deep learning and sensor fusion. The simulation environment was created and tested using robot operating system on a Linux operating system using a model of the custom-made drone. Experiments on the charging of the drone confirmed that the intelligent dynamic wireless power transfer (DWPT) method worked successfully while flying on air

    The role of muscle dysfunction in patellofemoral pain : influence of different treatment approaches

    Patellofemoral pain (PFP) is the most frequently diagnosed condition in patients with knee complaints and is particularly prevalent in young physically active individuals. Studies revealed that despite receiving treatment, the majority of individuals with PFP suffer from persistent complaints, indicating that current treatments fail to prevent the chronicity of symptoms. The failing long-term outcomes reflect the need to provide an update on the evidence of underlying muscular dysfunctional factors of PFP, as well as the investigation of different treatment approaches. As part of this PhD, a literature and a systematic review were conducted, which discussed the definition, risk factors, prognosis, pathophysiology and treatment of PFP. The meta-analysis showed that the majority of studies analysed muscle strength or muscular activity. Whereas, muscular dysfunctional factors such as atrophy, muscular inhibition, fatigue and flexibility remained understudied in individuals with PFP. To develop a robust and reliable test protocol for the investigation of muscular dysfunctional factors in individuals with PFP, a reliability study was performed, which enabled the development of a protocol that was applied in the following studies of the thesis. Knee braces are recommended in the acute phase of PFP. However, research on knee braces analysing the effect on stabilising the sagittal and coronal plane of the knee joint demonstrated conflicting results. Thus, the effect on lower limb biomechanics and pain of the PowersTM strap was investigated in 24 individuals with PFP and 22 healthy individuals and revealed that the PowersTM strap reduced pain and was able to modify lower limb biomechanics during functional tasks. Furthermore, a six week exercise programme for individuals with PFP was developed and investigated in 25 individuals with PFP. It could be shown that the treatment was effective to reduce pain, improve function and the functional performance of individuals with PFP. The final study of this PhD focused on the influence of acute pain on the functional performance, strength and quadriceps inhibition in 21 individuals with PFP. It was found that acute pain caused an increase of quadriceps inhibition in individuals with PFP, but did not affect functional performance or quadriceps strength. Thus, this thesis investigated the role of muscle dysfunction in PFP, explored the link to pain and showed how different treatment approaches were able to influence muscle dysfunction in individuals with PFP

    Biomedical and Human Factors Requirements for a Manned Earth Orbiting Station

    This report is the result of a study conducted by Republic Aviation Corporation in conjunction with Spacelabs, Inc.,in a team effort in which Republic Aviation Corporation was prime contractor. In order to determine the realistic engineering design requirements associated with the medical and human factors problems of a manned space station, an interdisciplinary team of personnel from the Research and Space Divisions was organized. This team included engineers, physicians, physiologists, psychologists, and physicists. Recognizing that the value of the study is dependent upon medical judgments as well as more quantifiable factors (such as design parameters) a group of highly qualified medical consultants participated in working sessions to determine which medical measurements are required to meet the objectives of the study. In addition, various Life Sciences personnel from NASA (Headquarters, Langley, MSC) participated in monthly review sessions. The organization, team members, consultants, and some of the part-time contributors are shown in Figure 1. This final report embodies contributions from all of these participants
