    Low-cost, high-resolution, fault-robust position and speed estimation for PMSM drives operating in safety-critical systems

    In this paper it is shown how to obtain a low-cost, high-resolution and fault-robust position sensing system for permanent magnet synchronous motor drives operating in safety-critical systems, by combining high-frequency signal injection with binary Hall-effect sensors. It is shown that the position error signal obtained via high-frequency signal injection can be merged easily into the quantization-harmonic-decoupling vector tracking observer used to process the Hall-effect sensor signals. The resulting algorithm provides accurate, high-resolution estimates of speed and position throughout the entire speed range; compared to state-of-the-art drives using Hall-effect sensors alone, the low speed performance is greatly improved in healthy conditions and also following position sensor faults. It is envisaged that such a sensing system can be successfully used in applications requiring IEC 61508 SIL 3 or ISO 26262 ASIL D compliance, due to its extremely high mean time to failure and to the very fast recovery of the drive following Hall-effect sensor faults at low speeds. Extensive simulation and experimental results are provided on a 3.7 kW permanent magnet drive

    Identification and Adaptive Control for High-performance AC Drive Systems.

    High-performance AC machinery and drive systems can be found in a variety of applications ranging from motion control to vehicle propulsion. However, machine parameters can vary significantly with electrical frequency, flux levels, and temperature, degrading the performance of the drive system. While adaptive control techniques can be used to estimate machine parameters online, it is sometimes desirable to estimate certain parameters offline. Additionally, parameter identification and control are typically conflicting objectives with identification requiring plant inputs which are rich in harmonics, and control objectives often consisting of regulation to a constant set-point. In this dissertation, we present research which seeks to address these issues for high-performance AC machinery and drive systems. The first part of this dissertation concerns the offline identification of induction machine parameters. Specifically, we have developed a new technique for induction machine parameter identification which can easily be implemented using a voltage-source inverter. The proposed technique is based on fitting steady-state experimental data to the circular stator current locus in the stator flux linkage reference-frame for varying steady-state slip frequencies, and provides accurate estimates of the magnetic parameters, as well as the rotor resistance and core loss conductance. Experimental results for a 43 kW induction machine are provided which demonstrate the utility of the proposed technique by characterizing the machine over a wide range of flux levels, including magnetic saturation. The remainder of this dissertation concerns the development of generalizable design methodologies for Simultaneous Identification and Control (SIC) of overactuated systems via case studies with Permanent Magnet Synchronous Machines (PMSMs). Specifically, we present different approaches to the design of adaptive controllers for PMSMs which exploit overactuation to achieve identification and control objectives simultaneously. The first approach utilizes a disturbance decoupling control law to prevent the excitation input from perturbing the regulated output. The second approach uses a Lyapunov-based adaptive controller to constrain the states to the output error-zeroing manifold on which they are varied to provide excitation for parameter identification.     This paper compares some sensorless Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motor (PMSM) controls for driving an electric vehicle in terms of operating speed. Sensorless control is a type of control method in which sensors, such as speed and position sensors, are not used to measure controlled variables.  The controlled variable value is estimated from the stator current measurement. Sensorless control performance is not as good as a sensor-based system. This paper aims are to recommend a control method for the PMSM sensorless controls that would be used to drive an electric vehicle. The methods that we will discuss are divided into four categories based on the operation speed area.  They are a startup, low speed, high speed, and low and high-speed areas. The low and high-speed area will be divided into with and without switching.  If PMSM more work at high speed, the most speed area that is used, we prefer to choose the method that works at high speed, that is, the modification or combination of two or more conventional methods

    Abstract: An auto-tuning and self-adaptation procedure for High Frequency Injection (HFI) based position and speed estimation algorithms in Interior Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motor (IPMSM) drives is proposed in this paper. Analytical developments show that, using conventional approaches, the dynamics of the high-frequency tracking loop varies with differential inductances, which in turn depend on the machine operating point. On-line estimation and adaptation of the small signal gain of the loop is proposed here, allowing accurate auto-tuning of the sensorless control scheme which does not rely on a priori knowledge of the machine parameters. On-line adaptation of Phase-Locked Loop (PLL) gains and of the injected voltage magnitude is also possible, leading to important advantages from the performance, loss and acoustic point of view. The theoretical basis of the method has been introduced first and the main concept demonstrated by means of simulations. Implementation has been carried out using the hardware of a commercial industrial drive and two Interior Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motors, namely a prototype and an off-the-shelf machine.     When a Permanent Magnet Synchronous Machine (PMSM) is utilized for applications where high dynamic performance is not a requirement, a simple open loop control strategy can be used to control them. PMSMs however are prone to instability when operated open loop in a variable speed drive, particularly at mid-frequencies/speeds. This paper presents an open-loop control strategy based on a direct adaptive neural network controller is developed for efficiency optimization of open-loop controlled PMSM drive. Stability constraints of the drive system which was previously reported are used to maintain both stable and highly efficient operation of the drive system. The adopted neural network can be viewed as a method for nonlinear adaptive system identification, relying on pattern recognition of stability limits and maximum obtainable efficiency. Results from computer simulation show that a stable and highly efficient operation can be maintained for the drive system under study irrespective of load and supply variations. The obtained results are also found in correlation with previously reported experiments and observations

    Comparative Study of Sensorless Control Methods of PMSM Drives

    Recently, permanent magnet synchronous motors (PMSMs) are increasingly used in high performance variable speed drives of many industrial applications. This is because the PMSM has many features, like high efficiency, compactness, high torque to inertia ratio, rapid dynamic response, simple modeling and control, and maintenance-free operation. In most applications, the presence of such a position sensor presents several disadvantages, such as reduced reliability, susceptibility to noise, additional cost and weight and increased complexity of the drive system. For these reasons, the development of alternative indirect methods for speed and position control becomes an important research topic. Many advantages of sensorless control such as reduced hardware complexity, low cost, reduced size, cable elimination, increased noise immunity, increased reliability and decreased maintenance. The key problem in sensorless vector control of ac drives is the accurate dynamic estimation of the stator flux vector over a wide speed range using only terminal variables (currents and voltages). The difficulty comprises state estimation at very low speeds where the fundamental excitation is low and the observer performance tends to be poor. The reasons are the observer sensitivity to model parameter variations, unmodeled nonlinearities and disturbances, limited accuracy of acquisition signals, drifts, and dc offsets. Poor speed estimation at low speed is attributed to data acquisition errors, voltage distortion due the PWM inverter and stator resistance drop which degrading the performance of sensorless drive. Moreover, the noises of system and measurements are considered other main problems. This paper presents a comprehensive study of the different methods of speed and position estimations for sensorless PMSM drives. A deep insight of the advantages and disadvantages of each method is investigated. Furthermore, the difficulties faced sensorless PMSM drives at low speeds as well as the reasons are highly demonstrated.
