    Signal Subspace Processing in the Beam Space of a True Time Delay Beamformer Bank

    A number of techniques for Radio Frequency (RF) source location for wide bandwidth signals have been described that utilize coherent signal subspace processing, but often suffer from limitations such as the requirement for preliminary source location estimation, the need to apply the technique iteratively, computational expense or others. This dissertation examines a method that performs subspace processing of the data from a bank of true time delay beamformers. The spatial diversity of the beamformer bank alleviates the need for a preliminary estimate while simultaneously reducing the dimensionality of subsequent signal subspace processing resulting in computational efficiency. The pointing direction of the true time delay beams is independent of frequency, which results in a mapping from element space to beam space that is wide bandwidth in nature. This dissertation reviews previous methods, introduces the present method, presents simulation results that demonstrate the assertions, discusses an analysis of performance in relation to the Cramer-Rao Lower Bound (CRLB) with various levels of noise in the system, and discusses computational efficiency. One limitation of the method is that in practice it may be appropriate for systems that can tolerate a limited field of view. The application of Electronic Intelligence is one such application. This application is discussed as one that is appropriate for a method exhibiting high resolution of very wide bandwidth closely spaced sources and often does not require a wide field of view. In relation to system applications, this dissertation also discusses practical employment of the novel method in terms of antenna elements, arrays, platforms, engagement geometries, and other parameters. The true time delay beam space method is shown through modeling and simulation to be capable of resolving closely spaced very wideband sources over a relevant field of view in a single algorithmic pass, requiring no course preliminary estimation, and exhibiting low computational expense superior to many previous wideband coherent integration techniques

    Wideband Direction of Arrival estimation and sparse modeling for underwater surveillance

    In underwater surveillance sources, such as ships or submarines, are localized using the acoustic noise emitted by the source engines, propellers and other machinery. The acoustic signals propagate in the sea and are recorded with an array of acoustic sensors. Processing the recorded signals to obtain the locations of the sources is known as Direction of Arrival (DOA) estimation in the field of signal processing. A simple mathematical model relating the sensor array geometry to the DOA of the source exists when the frequency of the source signal is known. The model is directly applicable to a narrowband DOA estimation problem where the energy of the source signals is concentrated around a single carrier frequency. For underwater surveillance, however, the source signals are wideband which complicates the problem. This thesis reviews existing methods for wideband DOA estimation: Simple extensions of well known narrowband methods MVDR and MUSIC, the so called coherent methods and the most recent methods belonging into the sparse framework. An original idea for extending MVDR using a likelihood based combining of subbands, MVDR-LBC is developed. The thesis models the sensor signals as a sparse autoregressive process by linear prediction and the original algorithm GRLS. The sparse model is shown to be effective compared to the conventional non-sparse one. The model can be used to compress the data recorded in underwater surveillance. The wideband DOA estimation methods are tested with a number of simulations and with real data recorded in the sea. MVDR is shown to be robust and effective, the accuracy and resolution of which can be improved using MVDR-LBC. MUSIC provides good resolution, is computationally efficient and can be implemented quite simply. The coherent methods are the most complicated and need good pre-estimations for the source directions but can resolve close sources best

    Mismatched Processing for Radar Interference Cancellation

    Matched processing is a fundamental filtering operation within radar signal processing to estimate scattering in the radar scene based on the transmit signal. Although matched processing maximizes the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR), the filtering operation is ineffective when interference is captured in the receive measurement. Adaptive interference mitigation combined with matched processing has proven to mitigate interference and estimate the radar scene. A known caveat of matched processing is the resulting sidelobes that may mask other scatterers. The sidelobes can be efficiently addressed by windowing but this approach also comes with limited suppression capabilities, loss in resolution, and loss in SNR. The recent emergence of mismatch processing has shown to optimally reduce sidelobes while maintaining nominal resolution and signal estimation performance. Throughout this work, re-iterative minimum-mean square error (RMMSE) adaptive and least-squares (LS) optimal mismatch processing are proposed for enhanced signal estimation in unison with adaptive interference mitigation for various radar applications including random pulse repetition interval (PRI) staggering pulse-Doppler radar, airborne ground moving target indication, and radar & communication spectrum sharing. Mismatch processing and adaptive interference cancellation each can be computationally complex for practical implementation. Sub-optimal RMMSE and LS approaches are also introduced to address computational limitations. The efficacy of these algorithms is presented using various high-fidelity Monte Carlo simulations and open-air experimental datasets

    Towards a Common Software/Hardware Methodology for Future Advanced Driver Assistance Systems
