    Regular Hierarchical Surface Models: A conceptual model of scale variation in a GIS and its application to hydrological geomorphometry

    Environmental and geographical process models inevitably involve parameters that vary spatially. One example is hydrological modelling, where parameters derived from the shape of the ground such as flow direction and flow accumulation are used to describe the spatial complexity of drainage networks. One way of handling such parameters is by using a Digital Elevation Model (DEM), such modelling is the basis of the science of geomorphometry. A frequently ignored but inescapable challenge when modellers work with DEMs is the effect of scale and geometry on the model outputs. Many parameters vary with scale as much as they vary with position. Modelling variability with scale is necessary to simplify and generalise surfaces, and desirable to accurately reconcile model components that are measured at different scales. This thesis develops a surface model that is optimised to represent scale in environmental models. A Regular Hierarchical Surface Model (RHSM) is developed that employs a regular tessellation of space and scale that forms a self-similar regular hierarchy, and incorporates Level Of Detail (LOD) ideas from computer graphics. Following convention from systems science, the proposed model is described in its conceptual, mathematical, and computational forms. The RHSM development was informed by a categorisation of Geographical Information Science (GISc) surfaces within a cohesive framework of geometry, structure, interpolation, and data model. The positioning of the RHSM within this broader framework made it easier to adapt algorithms designed for other surface models to conform to the new model. The RHSM has an implicit data model that utilises a variation of Middleton and Sivaswamy (2001)’s intrinsically hierarchical Hexagonal Image Processing referencing system, which is here generalised for rectangular and triangular geometries. The RHSM provides a simple framework to form a pyramid of coarser values in a process characterised as a scaling function. In addition, variable density realisations of the hierarchical representation can be generated by defining an error value and decision rule to select the coarsest appropriate scale for a given region to satisfy the modeller’s intentions. The RHSM is assessed using adaptions of the geomorphometric algorithms flow direction and flow accumulation. The effects of scale and geometry on the anistropy and accuracy of model results are analysed on dispersive and concentrative cones, and Light Detection And Ranging (LiDAR) derived surfaces of the urban area of Dunedin, New Zealand. The RHSM modelling process revealed aspects of the algorithms not obvious within a single geometry, such as, the influence of node geometry on flow direction results, and a conceptual weakness of flow accumulation algorithms on dispersive surfaces that causes asymmetrical results. In addition, comparison of algorithm behaviour between geometries undermined the hypothesis that variance of cell cross section with direction is important for conversion of cell accumulations to point values. The ability to analyse algorithms for scale and geometry and adapt algorithms within a cohesive conceptual framework offers deeper insight into algorithm behaviour than previously achieved. The deconstruction of algorithms into geometry neutral forms and the application of scaling functions are important contributions to the understanding of spatial parameters within GISc

    PHYSICS-AWARE MODEL SIMPLIFICATION FOR INTERACTIVE VIRTUAL ENVIRONMENTS

    Rigid body simulation is an integral part of Virtual Environments (VE) for autonomous planning, training, and design tasks. The underlying physics-based simulation of VE must be accurate and computationally fast enough for the intended application, which unfortunately are conflicting requirements. Two ways to perform fast and high fidelity physics-based simulation are: (1) model simplification, and (2) parallel computation. Model simplification can be used to allow simulation at an interactive rate while introducing an acceptable level of error. Currently, manual model simplification is the most common way of performing simulation speedup but it is time consuming. Hence, in order to reduce the development time of VEs, automated model simplification is needed. The dissertation presents an automated model simplification approach based on geometric reasoning, spatial decomposition, and temporal coherence. Geometric reasoning is used to develop an accessibility based algorithm for removing portions of geometric models that do not play any role in rigid body to rigid body interaction simulation. Removing such inaccessible portions of the interacting rigid body models has no influence on the simulation accuracy but reduces computation time significantly. Spatial decomposition is used to develop a clustering algorithm that reduces the number of fluid pressure computations resulting in significant speedup of rigid body and fluid interaction simulation. Temporal coherence algorithm reuses the computed force values from rigid body to fluid interaction based on the coherence of fluid surrounding the rigid body. The simulations are further sped up by performing computing on graphics processing unit (GPU). The dissertation also presents the issues pertaining to the development of parallel algorithms for rigid body simulations both on multi-core processors and GPU. The developed algorithms have enabled real-time, high fidelity, six degrees of freedom, and time domain simulation of unmanned sea surface vehicles (USSV) and can be used for autonomous motion planning, tele-operation, and learning from demonstration applications

    Exploring 3D Shapes through Real Functions

    This thesis lays in the context of research on representation, modelling and coding knowledge related to digital shapes, where by shape it is meant any individual object having a visual appareance which exists in some two-, three- or higher dimensional space. Digital shapes are digital representations of either physically existing or virtual objects that can be processed by computer applications. While the technological advances in terms of hardware and software have made available plenty of tools for using and interacting with the geometry of shapes, to manipulate and retrieve huge amount of data it is necessary to define methods able to effectively code them. In this thesis a conceptual model is proposed which represents a given 3D object through the coding of its salient features and defines an abstraction of the object, discarding irrelevant details. The approach is based on the shape descriptors defined with respect to real functions, which provide a very useful shape abstraction method for the analysis and structuring of the information contained in the discrete shape model. A distinctive feature of these shape descriptors is their capability of combining topological and geometrical information properties of the shape, giving an abstraction of the main shape features. To fully develop this conceptual model, both theoretical and computational aspects have been considered, related to the definition and the extension of the different shape descriptors to the computational domain. Main emphasis is devoted to the application of these shape descriptors in computational settings; to this aim we display a number of application domains that span from shape retrieval, to shape classification and to best view selection.Questa tesi si colloca nell\u27ambito di ricerca riguardante la rappresentazione, la modellazione e la codifica della conoscenza connessa a forme digitali, dove per forma si intende l\u27aspetto visuale di ogni oggetto che esiste in due, tre o pi? dimensioni. Le forme digitali sono rappresentazioni di oggetti sia reali che virtuali, che possono essere manipolate da un calcolatore. Lo sviluppo tecnologico degli ultimi anni in materia di hardware e software ha messo a disposizione una grande quantit? di strumenti per acquisire, rappresentare e processare la geometria degli oggetti; tuttavia per gestire questa grande mole di dati ? necessario sviluppare metodi in grado di fornirne una codifica efficiente. In questa tesi si propone un modello concettuale che descrive un oggetto 3D attraverso la codifica delle caratteristiche salienti e ne definisce una bozza ad alto livello, tralasciando dettagli irrilevanti. Alla base di questo approccio ? l\u27utilizzo di descrittori basati su funzioni reali in quanto forniscono un\u27astrazione della forma molto utile per analizzare e strutturare l\u27informazione contenuta nel modello discreto della forma. Una peculiarit? di tali descrittori di forma ? la capacit? di combinare propriet? topologiche e geometriche consentendo di astrarne le principali caratteristiche. Per sviluppare questo modello concettuale, ? stato necessario considerare gli aspetti sia teorici che computazionali relativi alla definizione e all\u27estensione in ambito discreto di vari descrittori di forma.     Stochastic crack growth simulation in reinforced concrete structures by means of coupled finite element and meshless methods

    The complex failure process of concrete structures can not be described in detail by standard engineering design formulas. The numerical analysis of crack development in concrete is essential for several problems. In the last decades a large number of research groups have dealt with this topic and several models and algorithms were developed. However, most of these methods show some difficulties and are limited to special cases. The goal of this study was to develop an automatic algorithm for the efficient simulation of multiple cracking in plain and reinforced concrete structures of medium size. For this purpose meshless methods were used to describe the growth of crack surfaces. Two meshless interpolation schemes were improved for a simple application. The cracking process of concrete has been modeled using a stable criterion for crack growth in combination with an improved cohesive crack model which can represent the failure process under combined crack opening and crack sliding very well. This crack growth algorithm was extended in order to represent the fluctuations of the concrete properties by enlarging the single-parameter random field concept for multiple correlated material parameters.Das komplexe Versagensverhalten von Betonstrukturen kann in der Regel nicht mit Standardbemessungsformeln beschrieben werden. Eine detaillierte numerische Analyse der Rissentwicklung in Beton ist für einige Problemstellungen unverzichtbar. In den letzten Jahrzehnten haben sich eine Vielzahl von Forschergruppen mit dieser Thematik aus-einandergesetzt. Dabei wurden verschiedene Modelle und Algorithmen entwickelt. Die meisten dieser Verfahren weisen jedoch verschiedene Probleme auf oder sind nur für Spezialfälle anwendbar. Das Ziel dieser Arbeit war die Entwicklung eines automatischen Algorithmus zur effizienten Simulation von mehrfacher Rissentwicklung in Beton- und Stahlbetonstrukturen mittlerer Größe. Dabei wurden netzfreie Verfahren angewendet, um die Änderung der Rissoberflächen abzubilden. Zwei netzfreie Interpolationstypen wurden im Hinblick auf eine unkomplizierte Anwendung angepaßt. Der Versagensprozess des Betons wurde mit Hilfe eines stabilen Risskriteriums in Kombination mit einem erwei-terten kohäsiven Rissmodell abgebildet. Dieses erweiterte Modell kann die Zusammenhänge bei kombinierter Rissöffnung und -gleitung sehr gut wiedergeben. Der entwickelte Algorithmus zur Risssimulation wurde in Hinblick auf eine stochastische Modellierung erweitert. Zu diesem Zweck wurde das Zufallsfeldkonzept für die Abbildung mehrerer untereinander korrelierter Materialparameter ergänzt

    The objectives of 301 projects placed under contract by the Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) program of the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) are described. These projects were selected competitively from among proposals submitted to NASA in response to the 1991 SBIR Program Solicitation. The basic document consists of edited, non-proprietary abstracts of the winning proposals submitted by small businesses. The abstracts are presented under the 15 technical topics within which Phase 1 proposals were solicited. Each project was assigned a sequential identifying number from 001 to 301, in order of its appearance in the body of the report. Appendixes to provide additional information about the SBIR program and permit cross-reference of the 1991 Phase 1 projects by company name, location by state, principal investigator, NASA Field Center responsible for management of each project, and NASA contract number are included
