Large Language Models for Software Engineering: Survey and Open Problems
This paper provides a survey of the emerging area of Large Language Models
(LLMs) for Software Engineering (SE). It also sets out open research challenges
for the application of LLMs to technical problems faced by software engineers.
LLMs' emergent properties bring novelty and creativity with applications right
across the spectrum of Software Engineering activities including coding,
design, requirements, repair, refactoring, performance improvement,
documentation and analytics. However, these very same emergent properties also
pose significant technical challenges; we need techniques that can reliably
weed out incorrect solutions, such as hallucinations. Our survey reveals the
pivotal role that hybrid techniques (traditional SE plus LLMs) have to play in
the development and deployment of reliable, efficient and effective LLM-based

Design of the software development and verification system (SWDVS) for shuttle NASA study task 35
An overview of the Software Development and Verification System (SWDVS) for the space shuttle is presented. The design considerations, goals, assumptions, and major features of the design are examined. A scenario that shows three persons involved in flight software development using the SWDVS in response to a program change request is developed. The SWDVS is described from the standpoint of different groups of people with different responsibilities in the shuttle program to show the functional requirements that influenced the SWDVS design. The software elements of the SWDVS that satisfy the requirements of the different groups are identified

A software classification scheme
Reusing code is one approach to software reusability. Code is the end product of the software lifecycle. It is delivered in a low level representation that is difficult to reuse unless an almost perfect match exists between available features and required specifications. There is a need to organize large inventories of software such that reusable code is easy to locate and exchange. The relative success in the reuse of code fragments reported by some software factories is due in part to their capacity to encapsulate domain specific functions and create specialized libraries of components classified by these locally standardized functions.A general software classification scheme that organizes reusability related attributes and common functions from different domains is proposed as a partial solution to the software reusability problem. For the problem of selecting from similar, potentially reusable. components, a partial solution based on evaluation of common characteristics is also proposed. A library system is presented that integrates the proposed classification scheme with an evaluation mechanism based on inherent component attributes, programming languages characteristics and reuser experience. The fundamental contribution of this dissertation is a formal treatment of a faceted scheme for software classification leading to better understanding of reusability at the code level. This approach has been prototyped in a library system for the semi-automatic classification of software components. Analysis were performed to evaluate the classification scheme. The results show the potential of the scheme in organizing collections of code fragments, in improving retrieval, and in simplifying the classification process. Tests of the evaluation mechanism showed positive correlation with evaluations conducted by potential reusers
Systems, methods and apparatus for generation and verification of policies in autonomic computing systems
Described herein is a method that produces fully (mathematically) tractable development of policies for autonomic systems from requirements through to code generation. This method is illustrated through an example showing how user formulated policies can be translated into a formal mode which can then be converted to code. The requirements-based programming method described provides faster, higher quality development and maintenance of autonomic systems based on user formulation of policies.Further, the systems, methods and apparatus described herein provide a way of analyzing policies for autonomic systems and facilities the generation of provably correct implementations automatically, which in turn provides reduced development time, reduced testing requirements, guarantees of correctness of the implementation with respect to the policies specified at the outset, and provides a higher degree of confidence that the policies are both complete and reasonable. The ability to specify the policy for the management of a system and then automatically generate an equivalent implementation greatly improves the quality of software, the survivability of future missions, in particular when the system will operate untended in very remote environments, and greatly reduces development lead times and costs
Universal Blog Manager
Sharing opinions and feeling on the Internet (blogging) is becoming increasingly popular with passing years. Application developers reacted to this trend and created many desktop applications making publishing simple. But almost none of these applications bring the whole power of the blogging engine to the user. We decided to fill this gap by designing a plugin-extensible desktop application capable of accessing any blog and harnessing all its potential, while still remaining simple and intuitive. By completing our intent, we created an application powerful enough for an exert user, yet simple enough for an average blogger. This application effectively fills the gap left open by more publishing-focused blogging tools.Department of Distributed and Dependable SystemsKatedra distribuovaných a spolehlivých systémůFaculty of Mathematics and PhysicsMatematicko-fyzikální fakult
Systems, methods and apparatus for modeling, specifying and deploying policies in autonomous and autonomic systems using agent-oriented software engineering
Systems, methods and apparatus are provided through which in some embodiments, an agent-oriented specification modeled with MaCMAS, is analyzed, flaws in the agent-oriented specification modeled with MaCMAS are corrected, and an implementation is derived from the corrected agent-oriented specification. Described herein are systems, method and apparatus that produce fully (mathematically) tractable development of agent-oriented specification(s) modeled with methodology fragment for analyzing complex multiagent systems (MaCMAS) and policies for autonomic systems from requirements through to code generation. The systems, method and apparatus described herein are illustrated through an example showing how user formulated policies can be translated into a formal mode which can then be converted to code. The requirements-based programming systems, method and apparatus described herein may provide faster, higher quality development and maintenance of autonomic systems based on user formulation of policies
A supportive environment for the management of software testing
This dissertation describes research undertaken on the management of software testing. A support environment for the management of software testing, entitled SEMST, is presented. The research approach involves the investigation of software configuration management and its application to the testing process; the study of software testing techniques and methods; the exploration of the significance of software testing management; a survey of related work; the development and analysis of the requirements for SEMST; its implementation and an assessment. The current version of SEMST is a prototype built on the top of Unix and RCS on a Sun workstation. It is able to maintain all versions of specifications, test cases and programs, as well as to manage the relationships between these components
Innovative Techniques for Testing and Diagnosing SoCs
We rely upon the continued functioning of many electronic devices for our everyday welfare,
usually embedding integrated circuits that are becoming even cheaper and smaller
with improved features. Nowadays, microelectronics can integrate a working computer
with CPU, memories, and even GPUs on a single die, namely System-On-Chip (SoC).
SoCs are also employed on automotive safety-critical applications, but need to be tested
thoroughly to comply with reliability standards, in particular the ISO26262 functional
safety for road vehicles.
The goal of this PhD. thesis is to improve SoC reliability by proposing innovative
techniques for testing and diagnosing its internal modules: CPUs, memories, peripherals,
and GPUs. The proposed approaches in the sequence appearing in this thesis are described
as follows:
1. Embedded Memory Diagnosis: Memories are dense and complex circuits which
are susceptible to design and manufacturing errors. Hence, it is important to understand
the fault occurrence in the memory array. In practice, the logical and physical
array representation differs due to an optimized design which adds enhancements to
the device, namely scrambling. This part proposes an accurate memory diagnosis
by showing the efforts of a software tool able to analyze test results, unscramble
the memory array, map failing syndromes to cell locations, elaborate cumulative
analysis, and elaborate a final fault model hypothesis. Several SRAM memory failing
syndromes were analyzed as case studies gathered on an industrial automotive
32-bit SoC developed by STMicroelectronics. The tool displayed defects virtually,
and results were confirmed by real photos taken from a microscope.
2. Functional Test Pattern Generation: The key for a successful test is the pattern applied
to the device. They can be structural or functional; the former usually benefits
from embedded test modules targeting manufacturing errors and is only effective
before shipping the component to the client. The latter, on the other hand, can be
applied during mission minimally impacting on performance but is penalized due
to high generation time. However, functional test patterns may benefit for having
different goals in functional mission mode. Part III of this PhD thesis proposes
three different functional test pattern generation methods for CPU cores embedded
in SoCs, targeting different test purposes, described as follows:
a. Functional Stress Patterns: Are suitable for optimizing functional stress during
I
Operational-life Tests and Burn-in Screening for an optimal device reliability
characterization
b. Functional Power Hungry Patterns: Are suitable for determining functional
peak power for strictly limiting the power of structural patterns during manufacturing
tests, thus reducing premature device over-kill while delivering high test
coverage
c. Software-Based Self-Test Patterns: Combines the potentiality of structural patterns
with functional ones, allowing its execution periodically during mission.
In addition, an external hardware communicating with a devised SBST was proposed.
It helps increasing in 3% the fault coverage by testing critical Hardly
Functionally Testable Faults not covered by conventional SBST patterns.
An automatic functional test pattern generation exploiting an evolutionary algorithm
maximizing metrics related to stress, power, and fault coverage was employed
in the above-mentioned approaches to quickly generate the desired patterns. The
approaches were evaluated on two industrial cases developed by STMicroelectronics;
8051-based and a 32-bit Power Architecture SoCs. Results show that generation
time was reduced upto 75% in comparison to older methodologies while
increasing significantly the desired metrics.
3. Fault Injection in GPGPU: Fault injection mechanisms in semiconductor devices
are suitable for generating structural patterns, testing and activating mitigation techniques,
and validating robust hardware and software applications. GPGPUs are
known for fast parallel computation used in high performance computing and advanced
driver assistance where reliability is the key point. Moreover, GPGPU manufacturers
do not provide design description code due to content secrecy. Therefore,
commercial fault injectors using the GPGPU model is unfeasible, making radiation
tests the only resource available, but are costly. In the last part of this thesis, we
propose a software implemented fault injector able to inject bit-flip in memory elements
of a real GPGPU. It exploits a software debugger tool and combines the
C-CUDA grammar to wisely determine fault spots and apply bit-flip operations in
program variables. The goal is to validate robust parallel algorithms by studying
fault propagation or activating redundancy mechanisms they possibly embed. The
effectiveness of the tool was evaluated on two robust applications: redundant parallel
matrix multiplication and floating point Fast Fourier Transform
