    Robust Fault Detection of Switched Linear Systems with State Delays

    This correspondence deals with the problem of robust fault detection for discrete-time switched systems with state delays under an arbitrary switching signal. The fault detection filter is used as the residual generator, in which the filter parameters are dependent on the system mode. Attention is focused on designing the robust fault detection filter such that, for unknown inputs, control inputs, and model uncertainties, the estimation error between the residuals and faults is minimized. The problem of robust fault detection is converted into an H infin-filtering problem. By a switched Lyapunov functional approach, a sufficient condition for the solvability of this problem is established in terms of linear matrix inequalities. A numerical example is provided to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed method

    Leak localization in water distribution networks using a mixed model-based/data-driven approach

In a first stage, residuals are obtained by comparing pressure measurements with the estimations provided by a WDN model. In a second stage, a classifier is applied to the residuals with the aim of determining the leak location. The classifier is trained with data generated by simulation of the WDN under different leak scenarios and uncertainty conditions. The proposed method is tested both by using synthetic and experimental data with real WDNs of different sizes.     Design considerations for flight test of a fault inferring nonlinear detection system algorithm for avionics sensors

    The modifications to the design of a fault inferring nonlinear detection system (FINDS) algorithm to accommodate flight computer constraints and the resulting impact on the algorithm performance are summarized. An overview of the flight data-driven FINDS algorithm is presented. This is followed by a brief analysis of the effects of modifications to the algorithm on program size and execution speed. Significant improvements in estimation performance for the aircraft states and normal operating sensor biases, which have resulted from improved noise design parameters and a new steady-state wind model, are documented. The aircraft state and sensor bias estimation performances of the algorithm's extended Kalman filter are presented as a function of update frequency of the piecewise constant filter gains. The results of a new detection system strategy and failure detection performance, as a function of gain update frequency, are also presented

    Parity space-based fault detection for Markovian jump systems

    This article deals with problems of parity space-based fault detection for a class of discrete-time linear Markovian jump systems. A new algorithm is firstly introduced to reduce the computation of mode-dependent redundancy relation parameter matrices. Different from the case of linear time invariant systems, the parity space-based residual generator for a Markovian jump system cannot be designed off-line because it depends on the history of system modes in the last finite steps. In order to overcome this difficulty, a finite set of parity matrices is pre-designed applying a unified approach to linear time invariant systems. Then the on-line residual generation can be easily implemented. Moreover, the problem of residual evaluation is also considered which includes the determination of a residual evaluation function and a threshold. Finally, a numerical example is given to illustrate the effectiveness of the proposed method

    Zonotopic fault detection observer design for Takagi–Sugeno fuzzy systems

    This paper considers zonotopic fault detection observer design in the finite-frequency domain for discrete-time Takagi–Sugeno fuzzy systems with unknown but bounded disturbances and measurement noise. We present a novel fault detection observer structure, which is more general than the commonly used Luenberger form. To make the generated residual sensitive to faults and robust against disturbances, we develop a finite-frequency fault detection observer based on generalised Kalman–Yakubovich–Popov lemma and P-radius criterion. The design conditions are expressed in terms of linear matrix inequalities. The major merit of the proposed method is that residual evaluation can be easily implemented via zonotopic approach.     A preliminary design for flight testing the FINDS algorithm

    This report presents a preliminary design for flight testing the FINDS (Fault Inferring Nonlinear Detection System) algorithm on a target flight computer. The FINDS software was ported onto the target flight computer by reducing the code size by 65%. Several modifications were made to the computational algorithms resulting in a near real-time execution speed. Finally, a new failure detection strategy was developed resulting in a significant improvement in the detection time performance. In particular, low level MLS, IMU and IAS sensor failures are detected instantaneously with the new detection strategy, while accelerometer and the rate gyro failures are detected within the minimum time allowed by the information generated in the sensor residuals based on the point mass equations of motion. All of the results have been demonstrated by using five minutes of sensor flight data for the NASA ATOPS B-737 aircraft in a Microwave Landing System (MLS) environment

    On design of robust fault detection filter in finite-frequency domain with regional pole assignment

    This brief is concerned with the fault detection (FD) filter design problem for an uncertain linear discrete-time system in the finite-frequency domain with regional pole assignment. An optimized FD filter is designed such that: 1) the FD dynamics is quadratically D-stable; 2) the effect from the exogenous disturbance on the residual is attenuated with respect to a minimized H∞-norm; and 3) the sensitivity of the residual to the fault is enhanced by means of a maximized H--norm. With the aid of the generalized Kalman-Yakubovich-Popov lemma, the mixed H--/H∞ performance and the D-stability requirement are guaranteed by solving a convex optimization problem. An iterative algorithm for designing the desired FD filter is proposed by evaluating the threshold on the generated residual function.
