OntoMaven: Maven-based Ontology Development and Management of Distributed Ontology Repositories
In collaborative agile ontology development projects support for modular
reuse of ontologies from large existing remote repositories, ontology project
life cycle management, and transitive dependency management are important
needs. The Apache Maven approach has proven its success in distributed
collaborative Software Engineering by its widespread adoption. The contribution
of this paper is a new design artifact called OntoMaven. OntoMaven adopts the
Maven-based development methodology and adapts its concepts to knowledge
engineering for Maven-based ontology development and management of ontology

Ontologies on the semantic web
As an informational technology, the World Wide Web has enjoyed spectacular success. In just ten years it has transformed the way information is produced, stored, and shared in arenas as diverse as shopping, family photo albums, and high-level academic research. The “Semantic Web” was touted by its developers as equally revolutionary but has not yet achieved anything like the Web’s exponential uptake. Identification of Design Principles
This report identifies those design principles for a (possibly new) query and transformation
language for the Web supporting inference that are considered essential. Based upon these
design principles an initial strawman is selected. Scenarios for querying the Semantic Web
illustrate the design principles and their reflection in the initial strawman, i.e., a first draft of
the query language to be designed and implemented by the REWERSE working group I4
SWISH: SWI-Prolog for Sharing
Recently, we see a new type of interfaces for programmers based on web
technology. For example, JSFiddle, IPython Notebook and R-studio. Web
technology enables cloud-based solutions, embedding in tutorial web pages,
atractive rendering of results, web-scale cooperative development, etc. This
article describes SWISH, a web front-end for Prolog. A public website exposes
SWI-Prolog using SWISH, which is used to run small Prolog programs for
demonstration, experimentation and education. We connected SWISH to the
ClioPatria semantic web toolkit, where it allows for collaborative development
of programs and queries related to a dataset as well as performing maintenance
tasks on the running server and we embedded SWISH in the Learn Prolog Now!

Towards a Rule Interchange Language for the Web
This articles discusses rule languages that are needed for a a
full deployment of the SemanticWeb. First, it motivates the need for such
languages. Then, it presents ten theses addressing (1) the rule and/or
logic languages needed on the Web, (2) data and data processing, (3)
semantics, and (4) engineering and rendering issues. Finally, it discusses
two options that might be chosen in designing a Rule Interchange Format
for the Web
Towards a generation-based semantic web authoring tool
Widespread use of Semantic Web technologies requires interfaces through which knowledge can be viewed and edited without deep understanding of Description Logic and formalisms like OWL and RDF. Several groups are pursuing approaches based on Controlled Natural Languages (CNLs), so that editing can be performed by typing in sentences which are automatically interpreted as statements in OWL. We suggest here a variant of this approach which relies entirely on Natural Language Generation (NLG), and propose requirements for a system that can reliably generate transparent realisations of statements in Description Logic
VPOET: Using a Distributed Collaborative Platform for Semantic Web Applications
This paper describes a distributed collaborative wiki-based platform that has
been designed to facilitate the development of Semantic Web applications. The
applications designed using this platform are able to build semantic data
through the cooperation of different developers and to exploit that semantic
data. The paper shows a practical case study on the application VPOET, and how
an application based on Google Gadgets has been designed to test VPOET and let
human users exploit the semantic data created. This practical example can be
used to show how different Semantic Web technologies can be integrated into a
particular Web application, and how the knowledge can be cooperatively

Drawing OWL 2 ontologies with Eddy the editor
In this paper we introduce Eddy, a new open-source tool for the graphical editing of OWL~2 ontologies. Eddy is specifically designed for creating ontologies in Graphol, a completely visual ontology language that is equivalent to OWL~2. Thus, in Eddy ontologies are easily drawn as diagrams, rather than written as sets of formulas, as commonly happens in popular ontology design and engineering environments.
This makes Eddy particularly suited for usage by people who are more familiar with diagramatic languages for conceptual modeling rather than with typical ontology formalisms, as is often required in non-academic and industrial contexts. Eddy provides intuitive functionalities for specifying Graphol diagrams, guarantees their syntactic correctness, and allows for exporting them in standard OWL 2 syntax. A user evaluation study we conducted shows that Eddy is perceived as an easy and intuitive tool for ontology specification
The Semantic Web Revisited
The original Scientific American article on the Semantic Web appeared in 2001. It described the evolution of a Web that consisted largely of documents for humans to read to one that included data and information for computers to manipulate. The Semantic Web is a Web of actionable information--information derived from data through a semantic theory for interpreting the symbols.This simple idea, however, remains largely unrealized. Shopbots and auction bots abound on the Web, but these are essentially handcrafted for particular tasks; they have little ability to interact with heterogeneous data and information types. Because we haven't yet delivered large-scale, agent-based mediation, some commentators argue that the Semantic Web has failed to deliver. We argue that agents can only flourish when standards are well established and that the Web standards for expressing shared meaning have progressed steadily over the past five years. Furthermore, we see the use of ontologies in the e-science community presaging ultimate success for the Semantic Web--just as the use of HTTP within the CERN particle physics community led to the revolutionary success of the original Web.
