    Microclimatic Evaluation of Five Types of Colombian Greenhouses Using Geostatistical Techniques

Available on open access from MDPI via the DOI in this recordn Colombia, the second-largest exporter of cut flowers worldwide and one of the South American countries with the largest area of crops under cover, passive or naturally ventilated greenhouses predominate. Locally, there are several types of greenhouses that differ in architecture, size, height, shape of roof and ventilation surfaces, of which many characteristics of the microclimate generated in their interior environment are unknown. This generates productive limitations that in some way may be limiting the yield, quality and health of the final products harvested; in addition, Colombian producers do not have the ability to monitor the microclimate of their farms, much less to correlate microclimate data with data on crop production and yield. Therefore, there is a need for the Colombian grower to know the most relevant microclimate characteristics generated in the main greenhouses used locally. The objective of this work was to carry out a microclimatic characterization of the five most used types of greenhouses in Colombia. The main results allowed determining that in these structures, there are conditions of high humidity and low vapor pressure for several hours of the day, which affects the physiological processes of growth and development of the plants. It was also identified that for each type of greenhouse, depending on the level of radiation, there is a significant microclimatic heterogeneity that may be the cause of the heterogeneity in plant growth, which is a common characteristic observed by the technical cultivation personnel.     New strategies for row-crop management based on cost-effective remote sensors

    Agricultural technology can be an excellent antidote to resource scarcity. Its growth has led to the extensive study of spatial and temporal in-field variability. The challenge of accurate management has been addressed in recent years through the use of accurate high-cost measurement instruments by researchers. However, low rates of technological adoption by farmers motivate the development of alternative technologies based on affordable sensors, in order to improve the sustainability of agricultural biosystems. This doctoral thesis has as main objective the development and evaluation of systems based on affordable sensors, in order to address two of the main aspects affecting the producers: the need of an accurate plant water status characterization to perform a proper irrigation management and the precise weed control. To address the first objective, two data acquisition methodologies based on aerial platforms have been developed, seeking to compare the use of infrared thermometry and thermal imaging to determine the water status of two most relevant row-crops in the region, sugar beet and super high-density olive orchards. From the data obtained, the use of an airborne low-cost infrared sensor to determine the canopy temperature has been validated. Also the reliability of sugar beet canopy temperature as an indicator its of water status has been confirmed. The empirical development of the Crop Water Stress Index (CWSI) has also been carried out from aerial thermal imaging combined with infrared temperature sensors and ground measurements of factors such as water potential or stomatal conductance, validating its usefulness as an indicator of water status in super high-density olive orchards. To contribute to the development of precise weed control systems, a system for detecting tomato plants and measuring the space between them has been developed, aiming to perform intra-row treatments in a localized and precise way. To this end, low cost optical sensors have been used and compared with a commercial LiDAR laser scanner. Correct detection results close to 95% show that the implementation of these sensors can lead to promising advances in the automation of weed control. The micro-level field data collected from the evaluated affordable sensors can help farmers to target operations precisely before plant stress sets in or weeds infestation occurs, paving the path to increase the adoption of Precision Agriculture techniques

    Evaluation of the ingestive behaviour of the dairy cow under two systems of rotation with slope

    The ingestive behaviour of grazing animals is modulated by the vegetation characteristics, topography and the type of stocking method. This research was carried out in 2019, at the Rumipamba CADER-UCE. It aimed to evaluate the impact of two contrasting stocking methods of dairy cows grazing a pasture with an average of slope >8.5%. Four dairy cows were set to graze a 0.4 ha paddock for 5 days for continuous stocking methods, while for the electric fence methods the dairy cows were restricted to 0.2 ha and the fence was moved uphill every 3 hours, repeating this process four times a day. Cow were equipped with activity sensors for 12 h per day. The whole procedure was repeated 2 times after realizing an equalization cuts and both paddocks, a rest time of 30 days and a random reassignment of paddocks to one of the treatments. The cows showed a difference in terms of the percentage of grazing P=0.0072, being higher with the electric fence (55% of the measurement time). From rising-plate-meter estimates of available biomass along the grazing periods, we calculated despite similar forage allowances (electric fence = 48.06 kg DM/cow/d and continuous = 48.21 DM/cow/d) a higher forage intake was obtained in the electric fence treatment (17.5 kg DM/cow/d) compared the continuous stocking (15.7 kg DM/cow/d) (P=0.006). In terms of milk production animals grazing under the differences electrical fence stocking method tended (P=0.0985) to produce more milk (17.39 kg/d) than those grazing in the continuous system (15.16 kg/d) due to the influence of the slope (P=0.05), while for milk quality the protein content was higher for the electric fence (33.7 g/l) than the continuous method (30.5 g/l) (P=0.039). None of the other milk properties differed between methods (P>0.05)
