    Plane-based 3D Mapping for Structured Indoor Environment

    Three-dimensional (3D) mapping deals with the problem of building a map of the unknown environments explored by a mobile robot. In contrast to 2D maps, 3D maps contain richer information of the visited places. Besides enabling robot navigation in 3D, a 3D map of the robot surroundings could be of great importance for higher-level robotic tasks, like scene interpretation and object interaction or manipulation, as well as for visualization purposes in general, which are required in surveillance, urban search and rescue, surveying, and others. Hence, the goal of this thesis is to develop a system which is capable of reconstructing the surrounding environment of a mobile robot as a three-dimensional map. Microsoft Kinect camera is a novel sensing sensor that captures dense depth images along with RGB images at high frame rate. Recently, it has dominated the stage of 3D robotic sensing, as it is low-cost, low-power. For this work, it is used as the exteroceptive sensor and obtains 3D point clouds of the surrounding environment. Meanwhile, the wheel odometry of the robot is used to initialize the search for correspondences between different observations. As a single 3D point cloud generated by the Microsoft Kinect sensor is composed of many tens of thousands of data points, it is necessary to compress the raw data to process them efficiently. The method chosen in this work is to use a feature-based representation which simplifies the 3D mapping procedure. The chosen features are planar surfaces and orthogonal corners, which is based on the fact that indoor environments are designed such that walls, ground floors, pillars, and other major parts of the building structures can be modeled as planar surface patches, which are parallel or perpendicular to each other. While orthogonal corners are presented as higher features which are more distinguishable in indoor environment. In this thesis, the main idea is to obtain spatial constraints between pairwise frames by building correspondences between the extracted vertical plane features and corner features. A plane matching algorithm is presented that maximizes the similarity metric between a pair of planes within a search space to determine correspondences between planes. The corner matching result is based on the plane matching results. The estimated spatial constraints form the edges of a pose graph, referred to as graph-based SLAM front-end. In order to build a map, however, a robot must be able to recognize places that it has previously visited. Limitations in sensor processing problem, coupled with environmental ambiguity, make this difficult. In this thesis, we describe a loop closure detection algorithm by compressing point clouds into viewpoint feature histograms, inspired by their strong recognition ability. The estimated roto-translation between detected loop frames is added to the graph representing this newly discovered constraint. Due to the estimation errors, the estimated edges form a non-globally consistent trajectory. With the aid of a linear pose graph optimizing algorithm, the most likely configuration of the robot poses can be estimated given the edges of the graph, referred to as SLAM back-end. Finally, the 3D map is retrieved by attaching each acquired point cloud to the corresponding pose estimate. The approach is validated through different experiments with a mobile robot in an indoor environment

    Abstract: The main goal was to improve a state of the art 6D SLAM algorithm with a new GPGPU-based implementation of data registration module. Data registration is based on ICP (Iterative Closest Point) algorithm that is fully implemented in the GPU with NVIDIA FERMI architecture. In our research we focus on mobile robot inspection intervention systems applicable in hazardous environments. The goal is to deliver a complete system capable of being used in real life. In this paper we demonstrate our achievements in the field of on line robot localization and mapping. We demonstrated an experiment in real large environment.     Inferring Geodesic Cerebrovascular Graphs: Image Processing, Topological Alignment and Biomarkers Extraction

    A vectorial representation of the vascular network that embodies quantitative features - location, direction, scale, and bifurcations - has many potential neuro-vascular applications. Patient-specific models support computer-assisted surgical procedures in neurovascular interventions, while analyses on multiple subjects are essential for group-level studies on which clinical prediction and therapeutic inference ultimately depend. This first motivated the development of a variety of methods to segment the cerebrovascular system. Nonetheless, a number of limitations, ranging from data-driven inhomogeneities, the anatomical intra- and inter-subject variability, the lack of exhaustive ground-truth, the need for operator-dependent processing pipelines, and the highly non-linear vascular domain, still make the automatic inference of the cerebrovascular topology an open problem. In this thesis, brain vessels’ topology is inferred by focusing on their connectedness. With a novel framework, the brain vasculature is recovered from 3D angiographies by solving a connectivity-optimised anisotropic level-set over a voxel-wise tensor field representing the orientation of the underlying vasculature. Assuming vessels joining by minimal paths, a connectivity paradigm is formulated to automatically determine the vascular topology as an over-connected geodesic graph. Ultimately, deep-brain vascular structures are extracted with geodesic minimum spanning trees. The inferred topologies are then aligned with similar ones for labelling and propagating information over a non-linear vectorial domain, where the branching pattern of a set of vessels transcends a subject-specific quantized grid. Using a multi-source embedding of a vascular graph, the pairwise registration of topologies is performed with the state-of-the-art graph matching techniques employed in computer vision. Functional biomarkers are determined over the neurovascular graphs with two complementary approaches. Efficient approximations of blood flow and pressure drop account for autoregulation and compensation mechanisms in the whole network in presence of perturbations, using lumped-parameters analog-equivalents from clinical angiographies. Also, a localised NURBS-based parametrisation of bifurcations is introduced to model fluid-solid interactions by means of hemodynamic simulations using an isogeometric analysis framework, where both geometry and solution profile at the interface share the same homogeneous domain. Experimental results on synthetic and clinical angiographies validated the proposed formulations. Perspectives and future works are discussed for the group-wise alignment of cerebrovascular topologies over a population, towards defining cerebrovascular atlases, and for further topological optimisation strategies and risk prediction models for therapeutic inference.     Advances in Simultaneous Localization and Mapping in Confined Underwater Environments Using Sonar and Optical Imaging.

    This thesis reports on the incorporation of surface information into a probabilistic simultaneous localization and mapping (SLAM) framework used on an autonomous underwater vehicle (AUV) designed for underwater inspection. AUVs operating in cluttered underwater environments, such as ship hulls or dams, are commonly equipped with Doppler-based sensors, which---in addition to navigation---provide a sparse representation of the environment in the form of a three-dimensional (3D) point cloud. The goal of this thesis is to develop perceptual algorithms that take full advantage of these sparse observations for correcting navigational drift and building a model of the environment. In particular, we focus on three objectives. First, we introduce a novel representation of this 3D point cloud as collections of planar features arranged in a factor graph. This factor graph representation probabalistically infers the spatial arrangement of each planar segment and can effectively model smooth surfaces (such as a ship hull). Second, we show how this technique can produce 3D models that serve as input to our pipeline that produces the first-ever 3D photomosaics using a two-dimensional (2D) imaging sonar. Finally, we propose a model-assisted bundle adjustment (BA) framework that allows for robust registration between surfaces observed from a Doppler sensor and visual features detected from optical images. Throughout this thesis, we show methods that produce 3D photomosaics using a combination of triangular meshes (derived from our SLAM framework or given a-priori), optical images, and sonar images. Overall, the contributions of this thesis greatly increase the accuracy, reliability, and utility of in-water ship hull inspection with AUVs despite the challenges they face in underwater environments. We provide results using the Hovering Autonomous Underwater Vehicle (HAUV) for autonomous ship hull inspection, which serves as the primary testbed for the algorithms presented in this thesis.     From images to augmented 3D models: improved visual SLAM and augmented point cloud modeling

    This thesis investigates into the problem of using monocular image sequences to generate augmented models. The problem is decomposed to two subproblems: monocular visual simultaneously localization and mapping (VSLAM), and the point cloud data modeling. Accordingly, the thesis comprises two major parts. The First part, including Chapters 2, 3 and 4, aims to leverage the system observability theories to improve the VSLAM accuracy. In Chapter 2, a piece-wise linear system is developed to model VSLAM, and two necessary conditions are proved to make the VSLAM completely observable. Based on the First condition, an instantaneous condition for complete observability, the "Optimally Observable and Minimal Cardinality (OOMC) VSLAM" is presented in Chapter 3. The OOMC algorithm selects the feature subset of minimal required cardinality to form the strongest observable VSLAM subsystem. The select feature subset is further used to improve the data association in VSLAM. Based on the second condition, a temporal condition for complete observability, the "Good Features (GF) to Track for VSLAM" is presented in Chapter 4. The GF algorithm ranks the individual features according to their contributions to system observability. Benchmarking experiments of both OOMC and GF algorithms demonstrate improvements in VSLAM performance. The second part, including Chapters 5 and 6, aims to solve the PCD modeling problem in a geometry-driven manner. Chapter 5 presents an algorithm to model PCDs with planar patches via a sparsity-inducing optimization. Chapter 6 extends the PCD modeling to quadratic surface primitives based models. A method is further developed to retrieve the high-level semantic information of the model components. Evaluation on the PCDs generated from VSLAM demonstrates the effectiveness of these geometry-driven PCD modeling approaches.Ph.D

    A Drift-Resilient and Degeneracy-Aware Loop Closure Detection Method for Localization and Mapping In Perceptually-Degraded Environments

    Enabling fully autonomous robots capable of navigating and exploring unknown and complex environments has been at the core of robotics research for several decades. Mobile robots rely on a model of the environment for functions like manipulation, collision avoidance and path planning. In GPS-denied and unknown environments where a prior map of the environment is not available, robots need to rely on the onboard sensing to obtain locally accurate maps to operate in their local environment. A global map of an unknown environment can be constructed from fusion of local maps of temporally or spatially distributed mobile robots in the environment. Loop closure detection, the ability to assert that a robot has returned to a previously visited location, is crucial for consistent mapping as it reduces the drift caused by error accumulation in the estimated robot trajectory. Moreover, in multi-robot systems, loop closure detection enables finding the correspondences between the local maps obtained by individual robots and merging them into a consistent global map of the environment. In ambiguous and perceptually-degraded environments, robust detection of intra- and inter-robot loop closures is especially challenging. This is due to poor illumination or lack-thereof, self-similarity, and sparsity of distinctive perceptual landmarks and features sufficient for establishing global position. Overcoming these challenges enables a wide range of terrestrial and planetary applications, ranging from search and rescue, and disaster relief in hostile environments, to robotic exploration of lunar and Martian surfaces, caves and lava tubes that are of particular interest as they can provide potential habitats for future manned space missions. In this dissertation, methods and metrics are developed for resolving location ambiguities to significantly improve loop closures in perceptually-degraded environments with sparse or undifferentiated features. The first contribution of this dissertation is development of a degeneracy-aware SLAM front-end capable of determining the level of geometric degeneracy in an unknown environment based on computing the Hessian associated with the computed optimal transformation from lidar scan matching. Using this crucial capability, featureless areas that could lead to data association ambiguity and spurious loop closures are determined and excluded from the search for loop closures. This significantly improves the quality and accuracy of localization and mapping, because the search space for loop closures can be expanded as needed to account for drift while decreasing rather than increasing the probability of false loop closure detections. The second contribution of this dissertation is development of a drift-resilient loop closure detection method that relies on the 2D semantic and 3D geometric features extracted from lidar point cloud data to enable detection of loop closures with increased robustness and accuracy as compared to traditional geometric methods. The proposed method achieves higher performance by exploiting the spatial configuration of the local scenes embedded in 2D occupancy grid maps commonly used in robot navigation, to search for putative loop closures in a pre-matching step before using a geometric verification. The third contribution of this dissertation is an extensive evaluation and analysis of performance and comparison with the state-of-the-art methods in simulation and in real-world, including six challenging underground mines across the United States

    Visual Navigation in Unknown Environments

    Navigation in mobile robotics involves two tasks, keeping track of the robot's position and moving according to a control strategy. In addition, when no prior knowledge of the environment is available, the problem is even more difficult, as the robot has to build a map of its surroundings as it moves. These three problems ought to be solved in conjunction since they depend on each other. This thesis is about simultaneously controlling an autonomous vehicle, estimating its location and building the map of the environment. The main objective is to analyse the problem from a control theoretical perspective based on the EKF-SLAM implementation. The contribution of this thesis is the analysis of system's properties such as observability, controllability and stability, which allow us to propose an appropriate navigation scheme that produces well-behaved estimators, controllers, and consequently, the system as a whole. We present a steady state analysis of the SLAM problem, identifying the conditions that lead to partial observability. It is shown that the effects of partial observability appear even in the ideal linear Gaussian case. This indicates that linearisation alone is not the only cause of SLAM inconsistency, and that observability must be achieved as a prerequisite to tackling the effects of linearisation. Additionally, full observability is also shown to be necessary during diagonalisation of the covariance matrix, an approach often used to reduce the computational complexity of the SLAM algorithm, and which leads to full controllability as we show in this work.Focusing specifically on the case of a system with a single monocular camera, we present an observability analysis using the nullspace basis of the stripped observability matrix. The aim is to get a better understanding of the well known intuitive behaviour of this type of systems, such as the need for triangulation to features from different positions in order to get accurate relative pose estimates between vehicle and camera. Through characterisation the unobservable directions in monocular SLAM, we are able to identify the vehicle motions required to maximise the number of observable states in the system. When closing the control loop of the SLAM system, both the feedback controller and the estimator are shown to be asymptotically stable. Furthermore, we show that the tracking error does not influence the estimation performance of a fully observable system and viceversa, that control is not affected by the estimation. Because of this, a higher level motion strategy is required in order to enhance estimation, specially needed while performing SLAM with a single camera. Considering a real-time application, we propose a control strategy to optimise both the localisation of the vehicle and the feature map by computing the most appropriate control actions or movements. The actions are chosen in order to maximise an information theoretic metric. Simulations and real-time experiments are performed to demonstrate the feasibility of the proposed control strategy

    Room layout estimation on mobile devices

    Room layout generation is the problem of generating a drawing or a digital model of an existing room from a set of measurements such as laser data or images. The generation of floor plans can find application in the building industry to assess the quality and the correctness of an ongoing construction w.r.t. the initial model, or to quickly sketch the renovation of an apartment. Real estate industry can rely on automatic generation of floor plans to ease the process of checking the livable surface and to propose virtual visits to prospective customers. As for the general public, the room layout can be integrated into mixed reality games to provide a better immersiveness experience, or used in other related augmented reality applications such room redecoration. The goal of this industrial thesis (CIFRE) is to investigate and take advantage of the state-of-the art mobile devices in order to automate the process of generating room layouts. Nowadays, modern mobile devices usually come a wide range of sensors, such as inertial motion unit (IMU), RGB cameras and, more recently, depth cameras. Moreover, tactile touchscreens offer a natural and simple way to interact with the user, thus favoring the development of interactive applications, in which the user can be part of the processing loop. This work aims at exploiting the richness of such devices to address the room layout generation problem. The thesis has three major contributions. We first show how the classic problem of detecting vanishing points in an image can benefit from an a-priori given by the IMU sensor. We propose a simple and effective algorithm for detecting vanishing points relying on the gravity vector estimated by the IMU. A new public dataset containing images and the relevant IMU data is introduced to help assessing vanishing point algorithms and foster further studies in the field. As a second contribution, we explored the state of-the-art of real-time localization and map optimization algorithms for RGB-D sensors. Real-time localization is a fundamental task to enable augmented reality applications, and thus it is a critical component when designing interactive applications. We propose an evaluation of existing algorithms for the common desktop set-up in order to be employed on a mobile device. For each considered method, we assess the accuracy of the localization as well as the computational performances when ported on a mobile device. Finally, we present a proof of concept of application able to generate the room layout relying on a Project Tango tablet equipped with an RGB-D sensor. In particular, we propose an algorithm that incrementally processes and fuses the 3D data provided by the sensor in order to obtain the layout of the room. We show how our algorithm can rely on the user interactions in order to correct the generated 3D model during the acquisition process

    Dense and Globally Consistent Multi-View Stereo

    Multi-View Stereo (MVS) aims at reconstructing dense geometry of scenes from a set of overlapping images which are captured at different viewing angles. This thesis is devoted to addressing MVS problem by estimating depth maps, since 2D-space operations are trivially parallelizable in contrast to 3D volumetric techniques. Typical setup of depth-map-based MVS approaches consists of per-view calculation and multi-view merging. Most solutions primarily aim at the most precise and complete surfaces for individual views but relaxing the global geometry consistency. Therefore, the inconsistent estimates lead to heavy processing workload in the merging stage and diminish the final reconstruction. Another issue is the textureless areas where the photo-consistency constraint can not discriminate different depths. These matching ambiguities are normally handled by incorporating plane features or the smoothness assumption, that might produce segmentation effect or depends on accuracy and completeness of the calculated object edges. This thesis deals with two kinds of input data, photo collections and high-frame-rate videos, by developing distinct MVS algorithms based on their characteristics: For the sparsely sampled photos, we propose an advanced PatchMatch system that alternates between patch-based correlation maximization and pixel-based optimization of the cross-view consistency. Thereby we get a good trade-off between the photometric and geometric constraints. Moreover, our method achieves high efficiency by combining local pixel traversal and a hierarchical framework for fast depth propagation. For the densely sampled videos, we mainly focus on recovering the homogeneous surfaces, because the redundant scene information enables ray-level correlation which can generate shape depth discontinuities. Our approach infers smooth surfaces for the enclosed areas using perspective depth interpolation, and subsequently tackles the occlusion errors connecting the fore- and background edges. In addition, our edge depth estimation is more robust by accounting for unstructured camera trajectories. Exhaustively calculating depth maps is unfeasible when modeling large scenes from videos. This thesis further improves the reconstruction scalability using an incremental scheme via content-aware view selection and clustering. Our goal is to gradually eliminate the visibility conflicts and increase the surface coverage by processing a minimum subset of views. Constructing view clusters allows us to store merged and locally consistent points with the highest resolution, thus reducing the memory requirements. All approaches presented in the thesis do not rely on high-level techniques, so they can be easily parallelized. The evaluations on various datasets and the comparisons with existing algorithms demonstrate the superiority of our methods
