    New Symbolic Tools for Differential Geometry, Gravitation, and Field Theory

    DifferentialGeometry is a Maple software package which symbolically performs fundamental operations of calculus on manifolds, differential geometry, tensor calculus, Lie algebras, Lie groups, transformation groups, jet spaces, and the variational calculus. These capabilities, combined with dramatic recent improvements in symbolic approaches to solving algebraic and differential equations, have allowed for development of powerful new tools for solving research problems in gravitation and field theory. The purpose of this paper is to describe some of these new tools and present some advanced applications involving: Killing vector fields and isometry groups, Killing tensors and other tensorial invariants, algebraic classification of curvature, and symmetry reduction of field equations.Comment: 42 page

    Spatially partitioned embedded Runge-Kutta Methods

    We study spatially partitioned embedded Runge–Kutta (SPERK) schemes for partial differential equations (PDEs), in which each of the component schemes is applied over a different part of the spatial domain. Such methods may be convenient for problems in which the smoothness of the solution or the magnitudes of the PDE coefficients vary strongly in space. We focus on embedded partitioned methods as they offer greater efficiency and avoid the order reduction that may occur in non-embedded schemes. We demonstrate that the lack of conservation in partitioned schemes can lead to non-physical effects and propose conservative additive schemes based on partitioning the fluxes rather than the ordinary differential equations. A variety of SPERK schemes are presented, including an embedded pair suitable for the time evolution of fifth-order weighted non-oscillatory (WENO) spatial discretizations.     A Pseudospectral Approach to High Index DAE Optimal Control Problems

    Historically, solving optimal control problems with high index differential algebraic equations (DAEs) has been considered extremely hard. Computational experience with Runge-Kutta (RK) methods confirms the difficulties. High index DAE problems occur quite naturally in many practical engineering applications. Over the last two decades, a vast number of real-world problems have been solved routinely using pseudospectral (PS) optimal control techniques. In view of this, we solve a "provably hard," index-three problem using the PS method implemented in DIDO, a state-of-the-art MATLAB optimal control toolbox. In contrast to RK-type solution techniques, no laborious index-reduction process was used to generate the PS solution. The PS solution is independently verified and validated using standard industry practices. It turns out that proper PS methods can indeed be used to "directly" solve high index DAE optimal control problems. In view of this, it is proposed that a new theory of difficulty for DAEs be put forth.Comment: 14 pages, 9 figure

    Modelling for Robust Feedback Control of Fluid Flows

    This paper addresses the problem of obtaining low-order models of fluid flows for the purpose of designing robust feedback controllers. This is challenging since whilst many flows are governed by a set of nonlinear, partial differential-algebraic equations (the Navier-Stokes equations), the majority of established control theory assumes models of much greater simplicity, in that they are firstly: linear, secondly: described by ordinary differential equations, and thirdly: finite-dimensional. Linearisation, where appropriate, overcomes the first disparity, but attempts to reconcile the remaining two have proved difficult. This paper addresses these two problems as follows. Firstly, a numerical approach is used to project the governing equations onto a divergence-free basis, thus converting a system of differential-algebraic equations into one of ordinary differential equations. This dispenses with the need for analytical velocity-vorticity transformations, and thus simplifies the modelling of boundary sensing and actuation. Secondly, this paper presents a novel and straightforward approach for obtaining suitable low-order models of fluid flows, from which robust feedback controllers can be synthesised that provide~\emph{a~priori} guarantees of robust performance when connected to the (infinite-dimensional) linearised flow system. This approach overcomes many of the problems inherent in approaches that rely upon model-reduction. To illustrate these methods, a perturbation shear stress controller is designed and applied to plane channel flow, assuming arrays of wall mounted shear-stress sensors and transpiration actuators. DNS results demonstrate robust attenuation of the perturbation shear-stresses across a wide range of Reynolds numbers with a single, linear controller

Тому теорія диференціальних рівнянь, як окрема тема в курсі вищої математики, посідає важливе місце в системі підготовки фахівців з механіки, фізики, електротехніки, хімії та машинобудування. Показана можливість використання диференціальних рівнянь при розв’язанні різноманітних хімічних задач.The article deals with applying mathematics in chemistry and chemistry-technology. Specifically, differential equations are extensively used in various fields of science and technology. That is why the theory of differential equations, as a separate topic in the course of higher mathematics, is of major importance in educational system of future mechanics, physicists, electrical engineers, chemists, mechanical engineers etc. A possibility of using differential equations in solving various chemical problems is demonstrated. Some chemical technology problems are exemplified whose general solution is reduced to separating variables equations, first-order linear differential equations, second-order linear homogeneous differential equations. It is noteworthy that in solving chemical technology problems we deal with all of these types of differential equations. First-order homogeneous differential equations are applied in solving the following problems: chemical compounds chlorination; chemical agent consumption with maximum end product yield in complex reactions. Second-order non-homogeneous differential equations with constant coefficients are used in solving problems of a system of reverse reactions running at constant volume; continuous hydrolysis of solid fat in a spray column. Second-order differential equations which allow reduction of order are utilized for problems such as liquid movement in capillaries. Second-order linear nonhomogeneous differential equations with constant coefficients are applied to solve various problems, e.g. to find a law of motion of a particle that falls as a precipitate in a liquid having no initial velocit

    Convergence of Adaptive Finite Element Methods

    Adaptive finite element methods (FEMs) have been widely used in applications for over 20 years now. In practice, they converge starting from coarse grids, although no mathematical theory has been able to prove this assertion. Ensuring an error reduction rate based on a posteriori error estimators, together with a reduction rate of data oscillation (information missed by the underlying averaging process), we construct a simple and efficient adaptive FEM for elliptic partial differential equations. We prove that this algorithm converges with linear rate without any preliminary mesh adaptation nor explicit knowledge of constants. Any prescribed error tolerance is thus achieved in a finite number of steps. A number of numerical experiments in two and three dimensions yield quasi-optimal meshes along with a competitive performance.     Reduced Basis Method for Parametrized Elliptic Optimal Control Problems

    We propose a suitable model reduction paradigm-the certified reduced basis method (RB)-for the rapid and reliable solution of parametrized optimal control problems governed by partial differential equations. In particular, we develop the methodology for parametrized quadratic optimization problems with elliptic equations as a constraint and infinite-dimensional control variable. First, we recast the optimal control problem in the framework of saddle-point problems in order to take advantage of the already developed RB theory for Stokes-type problems. Then, the usual ingredients of the RB methodology are called into play: a Galerkin projection onto a low-dimensional space of basis functions properly selected by an adaptive procedure; an affine parametric dependence enabling one to perform competitive offline-online splitting in the computational procedure; and an efficient and rigorous a posteriori error estimate on the state, control, and adjoint variables as well as on the cost functional. Finally, we address some numerical tests that confirm our theoretical results and show the efficiency of the proposed technique. Copyright \ua9 by SIAM.
