    A Survey of Phase Classification Techniques for Characterizing Variable Application Behavior

    Adaptable computing is an increasingly important paradigm that specializes system resources to variable application requirements, environmental conditions, or user requirements. Adapting computing resources to variable application requirements (or application phases) is otherwise known as phase-based optimization. Phase-based optimization takes advantage of application phases, or execution intervals of an application, that behave similarly, to enable effective and beneficial adaptability. In order for phase-based optimization to be effective, the phases must first be classified to determine when application phases begin and end, and ensure that system resources are accurately specialized. In this paper, we present a survey of phase classification techniques that have been proposed to exploit the advantages of adaptable computing through phase-based optimization. We focus on recent techniques and classify these techniques with respect to several factors in order to highlight their similarities and differences. We divide the techniques by their major defining characteristics---online/offline and serial/parallel. In addition, we discuss other characteristics such as prediction and detection techniques, the characteristics used for prediction, interval type, etc. We also identify gaps in the state-of-the-art and discuss future research directions to enable and fully exploit the benefits of adaptable computing.Comment: To appear in IEEE Transactions on Parallel and Distributed Systems (TPDS

    Modeling and Mapping of Optimized Schedules for Embedded Signal Processing Systems

    The demand for Digital Signal Processing (DSP) in embedded systems has been increasing rapidly due to the proliferation of multimedia- and communication-intensive devices such as pervasive tablets and smart phones. Efficient implementation of embedded DSP systems requires integration of diverse hardware and software components, as well as dynamic workload distribution across heterogeneous computational resources. The former implies increased complexity of application modeling and analysis, but also brings enhanced potential for achieving improved energy consumption, cost or performance. The latter results from the increased use of dynamic behavior in embedded DSP applications. Furthermore, parallel programming is highly relevant in many embedded DSP areas due to the development and use of Multiprocessor System-On-Chip (MPSoC) technology. The need for efficient cooperation among different devices supporting diverse parallel embedded computations motivates high-level modeling that expresses dynamic signal processing behaviors and supports efficient task scheduling and hardware mapping. Starting with dynamic modeling, this thesis develops a systematic design methodology that supports functional simulation and hardware mapping of dynamic reconfiguration based on Parameterized Synchronous Dataflow (PSDF) graphs. By building on the DIF (Dataflow Interchange Format), which is a design language and associated software package for developing and experimenting with dataflow-based design techniques for signal processing systems, we have developed a novel tool for functional simulation of PSDF specifications. This simulation tool allows designers to model applications in PSDF and simulate their functionality, including use of the dynamic parameter reconfiguration capabilities offered by PSDF. With the help of this simulation tool, our design methodology helps to map PSDF specifications into efficient implementations on field programmable gate arrays (FPGAs). Furthermore, valid schedules can be derived from the PSDF models at runtime to adapt hardware configurations based on changing data characteristics or operational requirements. Under certain conditions, efficient quasi-static schedules can be applied to reduce overhead and enhance predictability in the scheduling process. Motivated by the fact that scheduling is critical to performance and to efficient use of dynamic reconfiguration, we have focused on a methodology for schedule design, which complements the emphasis on automated schedule construction in the existing literature on dataflow-based design and implementation. In particular, we have proposed a dataflow-based schedule design framework called the dataflow schedule graph (DSG), which provides a graphical framework for schedule construction based on dataflow semantics, and can also be used as an intermediate representation target for automated schedule generation. Our approach to applying the DSG in this thesis emphasizes schedule construction as a design process rather than an outcome of the synthesis process. Our approach employs dataflow graphs for representing both application models and schedules that are derived from them. By providing a dataflow-integrated framework for unambiguously representing, analyzing, manipulating, and interchanging schedules, the DSG facilitates effective codesign of dataflow-based application models and schedules for execution of these models. As multicore processors are deployed in an increasing variety of embedded image processing systems, effective utilization of resources such as multiprocessor systemon-chip (MPSoC) devices, and effective handling of implementation concerns such as memory management and I/O become critical to developing efficient embedded implementations. However, the diversity and complexity of applications and architectures in embedded image processing systems make the mapping of applications onto MPSoCs difficult. We help to address this challenge through a structured design methodology that is built upon the DSG modeling framework. We refer to this methodology as the DEIPS methodology (DSG-based design and implementation of Embedded Image Processing Systems). The DEIPS methodology provides a unified framework for joint consideration of DSG structures and the application graphs from which they are derived, which allows designers to integrate considerations of parallelization and resource constraints together with the application modeling process. We demonstrate the DEIPS methodology through cases studies on practical embedded image processing systems

    StreamDrive: A Dynamic Dataflow Framework for Clustered Embedded Architectures

    In this paper, we present StreamDrive, a dynamic dataflow framework for programming clustered embedded multicore architectures. StreamDrive simplifies development of dynamic dataflow applications starting from sequential reference C code and allows seamless handling of heterogeneous and applicationspecific processing elements by applications. We address issues of ecient implementation of the dynamic dataflow runtime system in the context of constrained embedded environments, which have not been sufficiently addressed by previous research. We conducted a detailed performance evaluation of the StreamDrive implementation on our Application Specic MultiProcessor (ASMP) cluster using the Oriented FAST and Rotated BRIEF (ORB) algorithm typical of image processing domain.We have used the proposed incremental development flow for the transformation of the ORB original reference C code into an optimized dynamic dataflow implementation. Our implementation has less than 10% parallelization overhead, near-linear speedup when the number of processors increases from 1 to 8, and achieves the performance of 15 VGA frames per second with a small cluster configuration of 4 processing elements and 64KB of shared memory, and of 30 VGA frames per second with 8 processors and 128KB of shared memory

    dissertationDataflow pipeline models are widely used in visualization systems. Despite recent advancements in parallel architecture, most systems still support only a single CPU or a small collection of CPUs such as a SMP workstation. Even for systems that are specifically tuned towards parallel visualization, their execution models only provide support for data-parallelism while ignoring taskparallelism and pipeline-parallelism. With the recent popularization of machines equipped with multicore CPUs and multi-GPU units, these visualization systems are undoubtedly falling further behind in reaching maximum efficiency. On the other hand, there exist several libraries that can schedule program executions on multiple CPUs and/or multiple GPUs. However, due to differences in executing a task graph and a pipeline along with their APIs being considerably low-level, it still remains a challenge to integrate these run-time libraries into current visualization systems. Thus, there is a need for a redesigned dataflow architecture to fully support and exploit the power of highly parallel machines in large-scale visualization. The new design must be able to schedule executions on heterogeneous platforms while at the same time supporting arbitrarily large datasets through the use of streaming data structures. The primary goal of this dissertation work is to develop a parallel dataflow architecture for streaming large-scale visualizations. The framework includes supports for platforms ranging from multicore processors to clusters consisting of thousands CPUs and GPUs. We achieve this in our system by introducing the notion of Virtual Processing Elements and Task-Oriented Modules along with a highly customizable scheduler that controls the assignment of tasks to elements dynamically. This creates an intuitive way to maintain multiple CPU/GPU kernels yet still provide coherency and synchronization across module executions. We have implemented these techniques into HyperFlow which is made of an API with all basic dataflow constructs described in the dissertation, and a distributed run-time library that can be used to deploy those pipelines on multicore, multi-GPU and cluster-based platforms

No entanto, a simulação só é eficiente quando utiliza ferramentas de modelagem que suportem a descrição do comportamento do sistema em um elevado nível de abstração. A escassez de plataformas virtuais de MPSoCs que integrem hardware e software escaláveis nos motivou a desenvolver o MPSoCBench, que consiste de um conjunto escalável de MPSoCs incluindo quatro modelos de processadores (PowerPC, MIPS, SPARC e ARM), organizado em plataformas com 1, 2, 4, 8, 16, 32 e 64 núcleos, cross-compiladores, IPs, interconexões, 17 aplicações paralelas e estimativa de consumo de energia para os principais componentes (processadores, roteadores, memória principal e caches). Uma importante demanda em projetos MPSoC é atender às restrições de consumo de energia o mais cedo possível. Considerando que o desempenho do processador está diretamente relacionado ao consumo, há um crescente interesse em explorar o trade-off entre consumo de energia e desempenho, tendo em conta o domínio da aplicação alvo. Técnicas de escalabilidade dinâmica de freqüência e voltagem fundamentam-se em gerenciar o nível de tensão e frequência da CPU, permitindo que o sistema alcance apenas o desempenho suficiente para processar a carga de trabalho, reduzindo, consequentemente, o consumo de energia. Para explorar a eficiência energética e desempenho, foram adicionados recursos ao MPSoCBench, visando explorar escalabilidade dinâmica de voltaegem e frequência (DVFS) e foram validados três mecanismos com base na estimativa dinâmica de energia e taxa de uso de CPUAbstract: Recent design methodologies and tools aim at enhancing the design productivity by providing a software development platform before the definition of the final Multiprocessor System on Chip (MPSoC) architecture details. However, simulation can only be efficiently performed when using a modeling and simulation engine that supports system behavior description at a high abstraction level. The lack of MPSoC virtual platform prototyping integrating both scalable hardware and software in order to create and evaluate new methodologies and tools motivated us to develop the MPSoCBench, a scalable set of MPSoCs including four different ISAs (PowerPC, MIPS, SPARC, and ARM) organized in platforms with 1, 2, 4, 8, 16, 32, and 64 cores, cross-compilers, IPs, interconnections, 17 parallel version of software from well-known benchmarks, and power consumption estimation for main components (processors, routers, memory, and caches). An important demand in MPSoC designs is the addressing of energy consumption constraints as early as possible. Whereas processor performance comes with a high power cost, there is an increasing interest in exploring the trade-off between power and performance, taking into account the target application domain. Dynamic Voltage and Frequency Scaling techniques adaptively scale the voltage and frequency levels of the CPU allowing it to reach just enough performance to process the system workload while meeting throughput constraints, and thereby, reducing the energy consumption.     A TrustZone-assisted secure silicon on a co-design framework

Nowadays, their functionality is ever-growing, coupled with an increasing complexity and heterogeneity. Embedded applications increasingly demand employment of general-purpose operating systems (GPOSs) to handle operator interfaces and general-purpose computing tasks, while simultaneously ensuring the strict timing requirements. Virtualization, which enables multiple operating systems (OSs) to run on top of the same hardware platform, is gaining momentum in the embedded systems arena, driven by the growing interest in consolidating and isolating multiple and heterogeneous environments. The penalties incurred by classic virtualization approaches is pushing research towards hardware-assisted solutions. Among the existing commercial off-the-shelf (COTS) technologies for virtualization, ARM TrustZone technology is gaining momentum due to the supremacy and lower cost of TrustZone-enabled processors. Programmable system-on-chips (SoCs) are becoming leading players in the embedded systems space, because the combination of a plethora of hard resources with programmable logic enables the efficient implementation of systems that perfectly fit the heterogeneous nature of embedded applications. Moreover, novel disruptive approaches make use of field-programmable gate array (FPGA) technology to enhance virtualization mechanisms. This master’s thesis proposes a hardware-software co-design framework for easing the economy of addressing the new generation of embedded systems requirements. ARM TrustZone is exploited to implement the root-of-trust of a virtualization-based architecture that allows the execution of a GPOS side-by-side with a real-time OS (RTOS). RTOS services were offloaded to hardware, so that it could present simultaneous improvements on performance and determinism. Instead of focusing in a concrete application, the goal is to provide a complete framework, specifically tailored for Zynq-base devices, that developers can use to accelerate a bunch of distinct applications across different embedded industries.Os sistemas embebidos foram, durante muitos anos, sistemas com um simples e único propósito, caracterizados por recursos de hardware limitados e com cariz de tempo real. Hoje em dia, o número de funcionalidades começa a escalar, assim como o grau de complexidade e heterogeneidade. As aplicações embebidas exigem cada vez mais o uso de sistemas operativos (OSs) de uso geral (GPOS) para lidar com interfaces gráficas e tarefas de computação de propósito geral. Porém, os seus requisitos primordiais de tempo real mantém-se. A virtualização permite que vários sistemas operativos sejam executados na mesma plataforma de hardware. Impulsionada pelo crescente interesse em consolidar e isolar ambientes múltiplos e heterogéneos, a virtualização tem ganho uma crescente relevância no domínio dos sistemas embebidos. As adversidades que advém das abordagens de virtualização clássicas estão a direcionar estudos no âmbito de soluções assistidas por hardware. Entre as tecnologias comerciais existentes, a tecnologia ARM TrustZone está a ganhar muita relevância devido à supremacia e ao menor custo dos processadores que suportam esta tecnologia. Plataformas hibridas, que combinam processadores com lógica programável, estão em crescente penetração no domínio dos sistemas embebidos pois, disponibilizam um enorme conjunto de recursos que se adequam perfeitamente à natureza heterogénea dos sistemas atuais. Além disso, existem soluções recentes que fazem uso da tecnologia de FPGA para melhorar os mecanismos de virtualização. Esta dissertação propõe uma framework baseada em hardware-software de modo a cumprir os requisitos da nova geração de sistemas embebidos. A tecnologia TrustZone é explorada para implementar uma arquitetura que permite a execução de um GPOS lado-a-lado com um sistemas operativo de tempo real (RTOS). Os serviços disponibilizados pelo RTOS são migrados para hardware, para melhorar o desempenho e determinismo do OS. Em vez de focar numa aplicação concreta, o objetivo é fornecer uma framework especificamente adaptada para dispositivos baseados em System-on-chips Zynq, de forma a que developers possam usar para acelerar um vasto número de aplicações distintas em diferentes setores
